  • This study was to investigate the effects of preozonation on the waterborne organic removal by the biologically active GAC fluidized bed on a laboratory scale. The raw water to be treated comes from midstream of Han river. As the ozone dose was increased in the range of $1~3{;\}mgO_{3}/mgDOC$, it produced BDOC from 1.82 to 2.65 times. And BDOC formation can be expressed as [BDOC] = 0.74 + 0.21[DOC] ($R^{2}{\;}={\;}0.8399$). The effects of combination of ozonation followed by BACFB (Biological Activated Carbon Fluidized Bed) process were analyzed. At the ozone doze of $1~3{\;}mgO_{3}/mgDOC$, the large fraction of BDOC was removed by BACFB, but parameter revealed only around 10% reduction.

  • Several biological activities of extracts from roots of Cichorium intybus Linne (Compositae) were studied in this paper. The antiinflammatory activity of the methanol extract of this root was investigated against carrageenin induced edema in rat‘s hind paw. Significant inhibitory effects were observed at the dose of 1,000 mg/kg and were compared with aspirin as a control. The hepatoprotective activities of the methanol extract, ethylacetate and butanol fraction were studied on mice whose livers are damaged by $CCl_4$. The serum transaminase activities (ALT, AST) were reduced at the dose of 1,000 mg/kg of the methanol extract, 500 mg/kg of ethylacetate and butanol fraction, respectively. The bile juice secretion was also increased significantly from each fraction. The antidiabetic activity was examined on strepto-zotocin-induced diabetic rats with methanol extract. Methanol extract gave a significant reduction of blood glucose levels in 1 week and 3 weeks.

  • cis-Diamminedichloroplatinum(II)(CDDP), an antitumor drug, did not generate crosslink between bluetongue virus (BTV) capsid protein at moderate concentration. Cesium chloride density gradient centrifugation study revealed that protein-RNA crosslink was not detectable in CDDP treated BTV. CDDP treated BTV ds RNA showed remarkable change in the migration pattern in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. These results suggest that the reduction of BTV core associated transcriptase activity is most likely by the CDDP adduction to the genomic ds RNA rather than by the protein-RNA crosslink and/or protein-protein cross-link.

  • The low nutrient environment in drinking water treatment plants and distribution systems cannot to be a good environment for bacterial growth. However, biofilms can be frequently found submerged surface in treatment plants and distribution system. Biofilms in distribution system are harmful, in that they can release organisms, and may cause problems in taste and odor of water. Control of these Biofilms is difficult, and disinfection alone is usually ineffective. Biofilms will not be eliminated from distribution systems by any contemporary technology available now or in the future. Therefore reduction of organic matter, improved disinfection, or a combination of these methods can be useful in controlling distribution system biofilms.

  • With respect to the electrode structure and the discharge characteristics, the atmospheric pressure plasma sheet of a thin polyimide film is introduced in this study; here, the flexible plasma device of a dielectric-barrier discharge with the ground electrode and the high-voltage electrode formulated on each surface of a polyimide film whose thickness is approximately $100{\mu}m$, that is operated with a sinusoidal voltage at a frequency of 25 kHz and a low voltage from 1 kV to 2 kV is used. The streamer discharge is appeared along the cross-sectional boundary line between two electrodes at the ignition stage, and the plasma is diffused on the dielectric-layer surface over the high-voltage electrode. In the development of a plasma sheet with thin dielectric films, the avoidance of the insulation breakdown and the reduction of the leakage current have a direct influence on the low-voltage operation.

  • The browing, pyruvate content of sliced garlic during the drying in terms of drying temperature and sulfiting treatment were investigated. Sulfiting reduced the browning of garlic slices and prevented the reduction of pyruvate content against heat during the drying. Contents of pyruvate were decreased as the increase of drying temperature. Sulfiting treatment killed the microorganisms of sliced garlic products during the drying.

  • Two new harpacticoid species belonging to the genera $Microarthridion$ Lang, 1944 (Tachidiidae) and $Nitocra$ Boeck, 1864 (Ameiridae) are recorded from underground caves in the karst area of Ninh Binh Province, North Vietnam. $Microarthridion$ $thanhi$ n. sp. is distinguished from congeneric species by the number of setae on the antennary exopod, the structure of leg 5 in both sexes, and the finger-like process modified from an outer distal pinnate seta of the third endopodal segment of leg 2 in the male. $Nitocra$ $vietnamensis$ n. sp. has the character combination of six setae on the ellipsoidal exopod of leg 5 in both sexes, the first endopodal segment of leg 1 shorter than the whole exopod, the seta/spine armature of an inner seta of P2-P4 enp-1 and four elements on P2 enp-3, and the reduction of the proximal endite to a seta on the maxillary syncoxa.

  • In this study, a biological odor treatment system was proposed to remove odor(foul smell) materials causing several problems in the closed sewage treatment plant. This odor treatment system was composed of a two-step biofilter system in one reactor. The two-step biofilter reactor was constructed with natural purification layer in upper part and artificial purification layer in lower part. The reed grasses of water purification plants were planted in the surface area and mixed porous ceramic media were filled with the lower part of biofilter reactor. By using the above experimental apparatus, the ammonia gas removal efficiency was attained to 98.3 % and the hydrogen sulfide gas removal efficiency was appeared more than 97.7 % which shows more effective than the conventional odor removal process.

  • Effect of salt concentration of brined Chinese cabbage on the Kimchi fermentation was investigated. The salt concentration range was 1-5% and chemical characteristics of pH, acidity and ascorbic acid were measured during fermentation at $25^{\circ}C$. Fermentation rate was also calculated from the $CO_2$ production. It was found that the higher salt concentration caused a significant decrease in the maximum value of fermentation rate and pH reduction. Ascorbic acid content was rapidly decreased initially, followed by increase to maximum and slowely decreased thereafter. This change was more apparent at higher salt concentration.

  • Bacillus subtilis JW-1 was isolated from rhizosphere soil as a potential biocontrol agent of bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum. Seed treatment followed by a soil drench application with this strain resulted in >80% reduction in bacterial wilt disease compared with that in the untreated control under greenhouse conditions. The antibacterial compound produced by strain JW-1 was purified by bioactivity-guided fractionation. Based on mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral data ($^1H$, $^{13}C$, $^1H-^1H$ correlation spectroscopies, rotating frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy, and heteronuclear multiple-bond correlation spectroscopy), the structure of this compound was elucidated as a cyclic lipopeptide composed of a heptapeptide (Gln-Leu-Leu-Val-Asp-Leu-Leu) bonded to a ${\beta}$-hydroxy-iso-hexadecanoic acid arranged in a lactone ring system.
