Myocardial infarction is a disease caused by stenosis of the coronary arteries. The high risk of sudden cardiac death due to myocardial infarction has triggered related researches that have been actively studied so far. However, these studies focused on the clinical results, which are mainly based on observations of symptoms due to infarction through electrocardiograms. Therefore, in this study, we tried to analyze the behavior of heart according to the position and volume of infarction lesion through the computer simulation study using three dimensional ventricular models. In order to implement infarction, commercial software was used to simulate cell necrosis due to blockage of a specific coronary. In addition, the conduction block due to infarction was mimicked by reducing the electrical conduction in the infarcted area, which was 100 times less than the electrical conduction of the whole ventricular lattice implemented by the finite element analysis method. Thus, this study classified the infarcted cases into the upper, middle, lower, and apex according to lattice data of eight different infraction areas. In other words, we assumed that myocardial infarction would have inherent electro-dynamic characteristics depending on the location and extent, and analyzed the ventricular electromechanical responses for infarction lesions using a three dimensional cardiac physiome model. The results showed that the volume of infarction did not directly affect the cardiac responses, but the location of the infarction lesions could influence the ventricular pumping efficiency. These suggest that the occlusion of specific coronary arteries may have a fatal effect on the decline in ventricular performance. In conclusion, although location of myocardial infarction lesions is considered to be an important variable to be considered clinically rather than lesion size, quantitative predictions should be made more in the future considering physiological factors such as lesion location and direction of myocardial fiber at that location.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Zirconium oxide can be a substitute to titanium as implant materials to solve the esthetic problems of dark color in the gingival portion of implant restorations. PURPOSE: This study was performed to define attachment and growth behavior of osteoblast- like cells cultured on grooved surfaces of zirconium oxide and evaluate the genetic effect of zirconium oxide surfaces using the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). MATERIAL AND METHODS: MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on (1) commercially pure titanium discs with smooth surface (T group), (2) yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) with machined surface (ZS group), and (3) Y-TZP with $100{\mu}m$ grooves (ZG group). Cell proliferation activity was evaluated through MTT assay and cell morphology was examined by SEM. The mRNA expression of Runx2, alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, TGF-${\beta}1$, IGF-1, G3PDH in E1 cells were evaluated by RT-PCR. RESULTS: From the MTT assay, after 48 hours of adhesion of MC3T3-E1 cells, the mean optical density value of T group and ZG group significantly increased compared to the ZS group. SEM images of osteoblast-like cells showed that significantly more cells were observed to attach to the grooves and appeared to follow the direction of the grooves. After 24 hours of cell adhesion, more spreading and flattening of cells with active filopodia formation occurred. Results of RT-PCR suggest that T group, ZS group, and ZG group showed comparable osteoblast-specific gene expression after 24 hours of cell incubation. CONCLUSION: Surface topography and material of implants can play an important role in expression of osteoblast phenotype markers. Zirconia ceramic showed comparable biological responses of osteoblast-like cells with titanium during a short-time cell culture period. Also, grooves influence cell spreading and guide the cells to be aligned within surface grooves.
Objectives: Indoor air quality problems in public spaces have recently become a very important issue in South Korea, because many spend a long time every day indoors. In this study, an extensive literature review was performed on the subject of suspended bacteria and fungi in public facilities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the extent and types of suspended bacteria and fungi in indoor air in South Korea. This study will provide direction to the research in the field of indoor air. Methods: Article reviews was conducted using a search engine and the following keywords; 'bacteria', 'total suspended bacteria', 'fungi' and 'indoor air' from published articles since 2000. Results: Most of the places of measurement were schools, kindergartens, childcare centers and general hospitals. The highest concentrations of total suspended bacteria and fungi were found in schools and kindergartens. Some public facilities exceeded the standard of 800 CFU/$m^3$. There were few studies on other suspended bacteria: Gram Negative Bacteria, Staphylococcus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Conclusions: It appears that more studies with intensive controls are needed. It was found that schools and kindergartens were most susceptible to microbial indoor air pollution. These results may be able to suggest an indoor standard for suspended bacteria and fungi in South Korea.
Qigong is one energy-healing intervention used to prevent and cure ailments and to improve health through regular practice. Although qigong -neither itself nor its postulated mechanism of action- are within the paradigm of modern Western medical science, effects on the human body could be possible. This study aims to review the bibliography, biological responses and therapeutic effects of Qigong. In the process, this review will grasp trends in this field of studies and will direct further researches into the right direction. The computerized Korean databases were searched from their respective inceptions up to January 2008. The search terms used were 'qi', 'qigong', 'doin', 'training', 'bioenergy', 'life nurturing' and random or Korean language terms related to qigong. Several specialized journals were also manually searched for relevant articles. Since the 1990s, Qigong papers in the Korean Literature is increased. Clinical research studies are among the most control design study. Research subjects are less patient than the general public. The most common treatment disease was hypertension. The depth study for the each Qigong is needed. Specifically, I think it should be a clinical studies and qualitative research methods for evaluation are needed.
This paper is about the establishment of "Initial Response System." Initial response system is most important and should be treated urgently among all preparations for chemical terrorism. The objects of Initial response system are to protect civilians and the first responder who are exposed directly to chemical terrorism. Therefore, this paper suggests two main issues about Initial response system. One is to prepare immediate and exact information service system which assures the safety and survival of exposed people. The other is to build Scene Response System integrated with Command-Control Procedure for early finished situation. Compared to United States, overcoming the Chemical Terrorism requires to improve the contents of two categories: Counter Citizen Response part and Initial Scene Response part. For Counter citizen response part' s sake, the web-sites of Response leader agencies for searching information about chemical terrorism should be modified specifically. These web-sites have to be re-organized in detail. The existing Information service system which has been vaguely informed as "CBRNE Accident" needs to be divided as "CBRNE Accident" and "WMD terrorism." Further, each of them should be specialized in "Chemical', "Biological", and "Radiological" categories. There is a need to rearrange current Emergency Instruction for civilians against chemical terrorism in feasible way. At the same time, it should be applied consistently to all organizations through agreement between experts and related-organizations. For Initial Scene Response part's sake, "Initial scene response procedure (SOP)" and "Operational conception" should be produced through Simulated Exercises and workshops of all organizations related with initial response. These organizations have to cooperate with Ministry of Environment which is the main leader Agency as the center. Next, there is a need to develop a technology and Scene Response Equipments, and to standardize the response equipments which consider the capability of First Responders for chemical terrorism. Especially, improving capability of equipments is required to overcome the vulnerability of Scene Response Equipments.

Pacific anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) eggs were collected during the spawning season (2000-2003) using a revised ring net in the coastal waters adjacent to the Geum River Estuary in the West Sea of Korea (Yellow Sea). Anchovy eggs were present from May to September, showing a peak in spawning from June to July when the water temperature and salinity were $17-27^{\circ}C$ and above 30.00 psu, respectively. During the main spawning season, no clear diel cycle (regarding the 24-h sampling period of dusk, night, dawn, and daytime) was detected in the vertical distribution of anchovy eggs near Eocheong Island (50-60m depth). Judging from the developmental stages of the collected eggs, it appeared that anchovies spawned mostly at night and that the eggs hatched at dusk and during the night. The density of anchovy eggs was high in the southwest-northeast direction in June, and spawners appeared to move offshore in July. Mean egg density was higher in June 2002 than in June 2003 when water temperatures and salinities were lower. This study on the spatiotemporal distribution of eggs will contribute to developing management plans for the Pacific anchovy in Korea.
The most serious problems related to the cardiovascular prothesis are thrombosis and hemolysis. It is known that the flow pattern of cardiovascular prostheses is highly correlated with thrombosis and hemolysis. Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) is a usual method to get flow pattern, which is difficult to operate and has narrow measure region. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) can solve these problems. Because the flow speed of valve is too high to catch particles by CCD camera, high-speed camera (Hyspeed : Holland-Photonics) was used. The estimated maximum flow speed was 5m/sec and maximum trackable length is 0.5 cm, so the shutter speed was determined as 1000 frames per sec. Several image processing techniques (blurring, segmentation, morphology, etc) were used for the preprocessing. Particle tracking algorithm and 2-D interpolation technique which were necessary in making gridrized velocity pronto, were applied to this PIV program. By using Single-Pulse Multi-Frame particle tracking algorithm, some problems of PIV can be solved. To eliminate particles which penetrate the sheeted plane and to determine the direction of particle paths are these solving methods. 1-D relaxation fomula is modified to interpolate 2-D field. Parachute artificial heart valve which was developed by Seoul National University and Bjork-Shiely valve was testified. For each valve, different flow pattern, velocity profile, wall shear stress and mean velocity were obtained.
In this study, joint angles of the lower extremity and tibial acceleration and angular velocity were measured during a snowboard simulator exercises in order to evaluate the skill of snowboarders. Ten unskilled and ten expert snowboarders were recruited for the study. A three-dimensional motion capture system and two inertial sensor modules were used to acquire joint movements, acceleration and angular velocity of the lower extremities during snowboard simulator exercises. Pattern variations were calculated to assess variations in the snowboard simulator motion of unskilled and expert snowboarders. Results showed that expert snowboarders showed greater range of motion in joint angles and greater peak to peak amplitude in acceleration and angular velocity for tibia than unskilled snowboarders. The unskilled snowboarders did not show symmetrical shape(same magnitude but opposite direction) in tibial angular velocity during two edge turns in snowboard simulator exercises. The expert snowboarders showed smaller pattern variations for joint angle of lower extremity, tibial acceleration and tibial angular velocity than unskilled snowboarders. Inertial sensor data and pattern variations during the snowboard simulator exercises could be useful to evaluate the skill of snowboarders.
In this study, we investigated the rotational characteristics which were comprised of directionality and linearity of target registration error (TRE) as a study in advance to enhance the accuracy of contour-based registration in neuronavigation. For the experiment, two rigid head phantoms that have different faces with specially designed target frame fixed inside of the phantoms were used. Three-dimensional coordinates of facial surface point cloud and target point of the phantoms were acquired using computed tomography (CT) and 3D scanner. Iterative closest point (ICP) method was used for registration of two different point cloud and the directionality and linearity of TRE in overall head were calculated by using 3D position of targets after registration. As a result, it was represented that TRE had consistent direction in overall head region and was increased in linear fashion as distance from facial surface, but did not show high linearity. These results indicated that it is possible for decrease TRE by controlling orientation of facial surface point cloud acquired from scanner, and the prediction of TRE from surface registration error can decrease the registration accuracy in lesion. In the further studies, we have to develop the contour-based registration method for improvement of accuracy by considering rotational characteristics of TRE.
The purpose of this study is to determine optimal filtering condition and threshold for the detection of gait-cycles for various walkway slopes as well as gait velocities. Ten young healthy subjects with accelerometer system on thigh and ankle walked on a treadmill at 9 conditions (three speeds and three slopes) for 5 minutes. Two direction signals, i.e. anterior-posterior (AP) and superior-inferior (SI) directions, of each sensor (four sensor orientations) were used to detect specific events of gait cycle. Variation of the threshold (from -1G to 1G) and lowpass cutoff frequency (fc) were applied to the event detection and their performance was evaluated according to the error index (EI), which was defined as the combination of the accuracy and false positive rate. Optimal fc and threshold were determined for each slope in terms of the EI. The optimal fc, threshold and their corresponding EI depended much on the walkway slope so that their coefficients of variation (CV) ranged 19~120%. When all data for 3 slopes were used in the identification of optimal conditions for each sensor, the best error indices for all sensor orientations were comparable ranging 1.43~1.76%, but the optimal fc and threshold depended much on the sensor position. The result indicates that the gait-cycle detection robust to walkway slope is possible by threshold method with well-defined filtering condition and threshold.
