Symbiotic Biodegradation of Furfural by Some Bacteria (수종의 세균공존에 의한 Furfural의 분해)

  • Three Pseudomonas spp. and one Zoogloea sp. which could docompose the furfural were isolated from the enriched undefined cultures of soil. In the decompositioin of furfural thyey demonstrated protocooperation and synergism, utilizing 2-furoic acid a certain sudstance fural was subject to complete oxidation, which resulted in decolorization by mutural interactions. The decomposition was more efficient in mixed cultures than in a single culture.

  • Attempts were made to elucidate the process of biodegradation of furfural. Zoogloea sp. isolated from soil could convert furfural into 2-furoic acid by a certain enzyme (s) and also accumulated it extracellularly. This substance was extracted with diethyl ether and identified with U.V. spectrophotometry, high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and IR spectrophotometry.

  • A thermotolerant bacterium, designated as PHS1, was isolated from a hot spring in Pohang, Korea, on the basis of its ability to grow on BTEX as a sole carbon source. We cloned and sequenced the entire BTEX-degrading pathway genes of PHS1 and found that two multicomponent mono-oxygenases together with meta-pathway genes are responsible for the BTEX biodegradation.

  • The grafting of butyl methacrylate onto gelatin was investigated by potassium persulfate(KPS) redox system in aqueous solution. The optimum conditions of grafting were observed, and the physical property and the biocolnpatibility of graft copolymer membrane were examined. The gas permeability and the biodegradation by bacteria were decreased with the grafting percentage increased, and tensile strength increased with the grafting percentage increased.

  • A treatability investigation was conducted to determine if landfarming would be effective for the remediation of unsanitary landfill waste soils. Calculations based on biodegradable organic carbon contents and initial CO$_2$ evolution rates revealed that landfarming has a high potential for landfill site remediation and that the optimum strategy for bioremediation is site-specific.

  • Waste body settlement is an important aspect of management of landfill sites both during the operational and the post-closure phases. Settlement in landfill waste is caused by combination of load, creep and biodegradation induced effects. In this paper, settlement characteristics of closed waste landfill were studied by analyzing in situ measured data and computer simulation technique. Techniques for the analysis of load-induced and creep settlement, and for their implementation, can be adapted for landfill waste. The estimate of settlements from models shows a increase according to time.

  • A bacterial strain isolated from a compost-packed biofilter after 100 days of operation was identified as Rhodococcus pyridinovorans PYJ-1, with a similarity of 99%. This strain removed benzene, toluene and m-xylene (BTX) at 2~30 mg/L within 6~20 hrs in batch cultures. Optimum pH and temperature for BTX removal were pH 7 and $32^{\circ}C$. This strain also removed a mixture of BTX at component concentrations of 2~5 mg/L.
