  • A three-dimensional ecological model (EMT -3D) was applied to Nonylphenol in Tokyo Bay. EMT -3D was calibrated with data obtained in the study area. The simulated results of dissolved Nonylphenol were in good agreement with the observed values, with a correlation coefficient(R) of 0.7707 and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.5940. The results of sensitivity analysis showed that biodegradation rate and bioconcentration factor are most important factors for dissolved Nonylphenol and Nonylphenol in phytoplankton, respectively. In the case of Nonylphenol in particulate organic carbon, biodegradation rate and partition coefficient were important factors. Therefore, the parameters must be carefully considered in the modeling. The mass balance results showed that standing stocks of Nonylphenol in water, in particulate organic carbon and in phytoplankton are $8.60\times 10^5\;g,\;2.19\times 10^2\;g\;and\;3.78\times 10^0\;g$ respectively. With respect to the flux of dissolved Nonylphenol, biodegradation in the water column, effluent to the open sea and partition to particulate organic carbon were $6.02\times10^3\;g/day,\;6.02\times10^2\;g/day\;and\;1.02\times10^1\;g/day$, respectively.

  • The stimulatory effects of exogenous salicylate as a pathway inducer on phenanthrene biodegradation were investigated using Burkholderia cepacia PM07. The phenanthrene degradation rate was greatly enhanced by increasing the salicylate additions, and the maximum rate was 19.6 mg $I^{-1}\;d^{-1}$ with the addition of 200 mg $I^{-1}$ of salicylate, 3.5 times higher than that (5.6 mg $I^{-1}\;d^{-1}$) without the addition of salicylate. The degradation rate was decreased at higher concentrations of salicylate (above 500 mg$I^{-1}$), and cell growth was significantly inhibited. The phenanthrene degradation was not affected by increasing glucose up to 2 g $I^{-1}$, although dramatic microbial growth was obtained. The stimulatory effect of exogenous salicylate decreased in the presence of glucose. After the addition of 200 mg $I^{-1}$ of salicylate, approximately $60\%$ of the initial phenanthrene (50 mg $I^{-1}$) was degraded after 96 h. However, with extra addition of 200 mg $I^{-1}$ of glucose, the phenanthrene degradation rate decreased, and only $18.5\%$ of the initial phenanthrene was degraded.

  • To investigate oleic acid biodegradation, 47 fungal strains were tested with modified Czapek Dox broth media containing oleic acid, and their biodegradative activities were assayed by measuring the release of $[^14C]CO_2$ from the $^14C-$labeled oleic acid. After 72 h of cultivation, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus ochraceus, and Alternaria species metabolized approximately $25\%\;to\;35\%$ of the supplied oleic acid. The relationship between the fungal degradation of oleic acid and the fungal growth was also examined using 7 strains of Aspergillus niger. A. niger. YMC 0100 and YMC 0322 degraded about $26\%$ of the oleic acid after 72 h, while their germination ratios were more than $30\%$.

  • Vinclozolin, an endocrine disrupting chemical, is a chlorinated fungicide widely used to control fungal diseases. However, its metabolite 3,5-dichloroaniline is more toxic and persistent than the parent vinclozolin. For the biodegradation of vinclozolin, vinclozolin- and/or 3,5-dichloroaniline-degrading bacteria were isolated from pesticide-polluted agriculture soil. Among the isolated bacteria, a Rhodococcus sp. was identified from a 16S rDNA sequence analysis and named Rhodococcus sp. T1-1. The degradation ratios for vinclozolin or 3,5-dichloroaniline in a minimal medium containing vinclozolin $(200{\mu}ml)$ or 3,5-dichloroaniline $(120{\mu}g/ml)$ were 90% and 84.1%, respectively. Moreover, Rhodococcus sp. T1-1 also showed an effective capability to biodegrade dichloroaniline isomers on enrichment cultures in which they were contained. Therefore, these results suggest that Rhodococcus sp. T1-1 can bioremediate vinclozolin as well as 3,5-dichloroaniline.

  • 2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB) is one of typical odorants in potable water sources, which is hardly removed by conventional water treatment process. In this study, three strains capable of removing 2-MIB singly from drinking water were isolated from activated carbon of sand filter. They were identified to be Shinella zoogloeoides, Bacillus idriensis and Chitinophagaceae bacterium based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. In mineral salts medium without external carbon source, removal efficiencies of $20{\mu}g/L$ 2-MIB in three days were 23.3%, 32.9% and 17.0% for Shinella zoogloeoides, Bacillus idriensis and Chitinophagaceae bacterium, respectively. The biodegradation of 2-MIB was significantly improved with the presence of cometabolism carbon(glycerol, glucose, etc.). In the period of 20 days, Bacillus idriensis can remove 2 mg/L MIB to $368.2{\mu}g/L$ and $315.4{\mu}g/L$ in mineral salts medium without and with glycerol respectively. The removal of 2-MIB by Bacillus idriensis was from 2 mg/L to $958.4{\mu}g/L$ in Xiba river samples on 15 days.

  • Environment-friendly composites reinforced with bagasse fiber (BF), a kind of natural fiber as the remains from squeezed sugarcane, were fabricated by injection molding and press molding. As appropriate matrices for injection molding and press molding, polypropylene (PP) and polycaprolactone-cornstarch (PCL-C) were selected, as a typical recyclable resin and biodegradable resin, respectively. The mechanical properties of BF/PP composites were investigated in view of fiber mass fraction and injection molding conditions. And the mechanical properties and the biodegradation of BF/PCL composites were also evaluated. In the case of injection molding, the flexural modulus increased with an increase in fiber mass fraction, and the mechanical properties decreased with an increase in cylinder temperature due to the thermal degradation of BF. The optimum conditions increasing the flexural properties and the impact strength were $90^{\circ}C$ mold temperature, 30 s injection interval, and in the range of 165 to $185^{\circ}C$ cylinder temperature. On the other hand, as to BF/PCL-C fully-green composites, both the flexural properties and the impact strength increased with an increase in fiber mass fraction. It is considered that the BF compressed during preparation could result in the enhancement in mechanical properties. The results of the biodegradability test showed the addition of BF caused the acceleration of weight loss, which increased further with increasing fiber content. This reveals that the addition and the quantities of BF could promote the biodegradation of fully-green composites.

  • Biodegradation is a natural weathering process by microorganisms to decompose spilled oil or environmental contaminants. To accelerate this process, applying nutrients (fertilizer) or more microorganisms to naturally occurring microorganisms is called 'Bioremediation.' Presently, most popular response technique to spilled oil is mechanical cleanup using booms or skimmers. For the alternative to this technique, chemical dispersants, in-situ burning are used. Another promising alternative is bioremediation and it can clean oil contaminated seashore during enough time. In this paper, types of bioremediation technologies, its usage potential, and important consideration issues when applying this technique were summarized.

  • The influent COD of municipal wastewater has been divided into 4 fractions; readily soluble biodegradable, slowly particulate biodegradable, soluble and particulate unbiodegradable COD. The mathematical modeling of biological wastewater treatment processes and the design and operation of nutrient removal plants require a reliable and accurate estimate of the composition of influent wastewater COD. COD utilization rate is proportional to the oxygen uptake rate(OUR), so a batch biodegradation test with OUR measurement has been effectively used for the determination of COD fractionation. But the mathematical model of COD utilization and heterotrophs synthesis is essential to interpret the OUR measurement. Mamais method is another method for determining readily biodegradable soluble COD. Like the OUR test method, batch biodegradation test is necessary but it does not require mathematical model. These two methods for determining COD fractionation are introduced here in detail. Experimental results showed that COD composition by Mamais method is not different to that by OUR test method so, either of them can be used.

  • As the biodegradation of wood constituents has been understood as a multi-basidiomycetes and enzymatic processes, this review will focus on the roles of low molecular compounds and radicals working in harmony with fungal enzymes. Wood rotting basidiomycete fungi penetrate wood, and lead to more easily metabolize carbohydrates of the wood complex. The white-rot fungi, having versatile enzymes, are able to attack directly the "lignin barrier". They also use a multi-enzyme system including so-called "feedback" type enzymes allowing for simultaneous degradation of lignin and carbohydrates. The multi-enzymes including laccase support the proposed route by explaining how the high molecular weight enzymes can function in the wood complex. These enzymes may function separately or cooperate each other. In addition, veratryl alcohol oxidase, cellobiose dehydrogenase, arylalcohol dehydrogenase, and particularly low molecular mediators and radicals have an important role in wood biodegradation. However, the possibility of other mechanism as well as other enzymes, as operating as feedback systems in the process of wood degradation, could not be excluded.

  • Facultative psychrophilic bacteria utilizing SDBS (Sodium Dodecyl Benzene Sulfonate) as their carbon source were isolated in the Han River. All of these isolated faculatative psychrophilic bacteria were identified as Pseudomonas spp. The growth and biodegradation rates of Ps.fluorescens LP6, Ps. fluorescens LS6 and Ps. putida LC1 among 8 identified facultative psychrophilic bacteria were investigated with spectrophotometer. The specific growth rates of these three facultative psychrophilic bacteria at $25^{\circ}C$ were higher than those at any other temperatures. However, the final cell yields were the highest for cells grown at $5^{\circ}C$. The biodegradation of SDBS by Ps. fluorescens LP 6 was started at the stationary phase of cells. The biodegradation rate of SDBS by Ps. fluorescens LP6 was the highest when the cells were cultured at $25^{\circ}C$.
