  • Prevalence of an obese population has been increasing in Korea. Obesity is considered a major risk factor for chronic degenerative diseases. Specifically, prevalence of obesity is prominent for adult woman in Korea. In many weight control programs, weight change did not often show any beneficial effects for health. These facts discourage people in the program. Thus in this study, the anthropometry, blood pressure, serum biochemical indices and dietary habits were compared by percent body fat change for adult women to show the beneficial effects of the weight control program. Study subjects were 134. Measurements were done before and after the weight control program. Percent Body Fat (PBF) was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Using PBF changes, subjects were grouped as I (more than 1% increase), M (${\pm}1%$ change), and D (more than 1% decrease). Data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 program. Among the 134 participants, 13 increased their weight and 100 decreased. For PBF, 19 increased and 59 decreased. Statistical significant differences were shown for anthropometric assessments before and after for all weight, fat mass, percent body fat, waist-hip ratio and body mass index. I had increases, and D shows decreases. But the difference of D is large than M. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures decreased in all groups (p < 0.05). Fasting blood glucose decreased in all groups but were statistically significant only in D. Also triglyceride decreased in D (p < 0.05). Thus health conditions showed desirable changes in I < M < D in order. Dietary habit changes were desirable with only D. Weight, BMI and other indicators for obesity is not the real indicator for PBF. Recently it is easy to measure PBF. Thus, for weight control programs and to show benefits of the program, PBF is a good indicator for adult women in Korea.

  • In this study, we investigate the status of calcium (Ca) homeostasis at parturition in three dairy farms (I, II, and III), Heilongjiang, China. Twenty multiparous Holstein cows from each farm were randomly assigned to this experiment. The dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) was 91 mEq/kg of DM for farm I, 152 mEq/kg of DM for farm II, and 85 mEq/kg of DM for farm III. Incidence of hypocalcemia was above 75% and urine pH was above 7.25 at calving in each farm. Compared to other farms, cows in farm II that fed the greatest positive DCAD had the lowest concentration of serum Ca, the highest concentration of serum PTH, and the greatest urine pH at calving (p < 0.05). However, there was not significant difference in serum 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D and hydroxyproline concentration of the cows among three farms. This is the first study to confirm that hypocalcemia is very prevalent at calving in Chinese dairy farms, and the high positive DCAD is a major risk factor that results in hypocalcemia at calving, which may reduce ability of the cow to maintain Ca homeostasis.

  • The purpose of this study is to validate the potential etiologic factors for temporomandibular disorder(TMD). TMJ arthroscopic examination was performed in upper joint compartment of 32 joints from 20 patients with mandibular fractures. Synovial fluid was collected from the upper joint space during pumping manipulation with normal saline. Cytologic smearing and histomorphologic exam of synovial fluid were performed in 15 joints. Prostaglandin $E_2(PGE_2)$ concentration was measured in 11 joints. Leukotriene $B_4(LTB_4)$ concentration was measured in 8 joints. There were several arthroscopic variables such as ecchymosis, fibrillation, and adhesion. Histomorphologic exam showed a variety of findings such as bloody smears, cellular cluster, degenerated cells and cartilage, undifferentiated crystal. Mean $PGE_2$ concentrations were 316.5 pg/ml. Mean LTB4 concentrations were 45.9pg/ml. This study demonstrated a variety of findings on inflammatory and degenerative changes of TMJ. Because acute trauma such as mandibular fracture is a major etiologic factor in cartilage degradation and biochemical and intraarticular pathology, clinicians must identify and address TMJ signs and symptoms during follow-up periods in the long term.

  • The Philippines is abundant with rich natural resources such as water. Because of rapid urbanization in the country, most of the water bodies are polluted as a result of domestic, agricultural and industrial activities. The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) is the main government arm responsible for monitoring and inspection of affected water bodies. Only water bodies with at least four sampling events during dry and wet seasons were included in the assessment of water bodies that passed the DAO 90-34 water quality criteria. Water bodies were monitored for dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), and total dissolved solids (TDS), heavy metals, fecal coliform contamination and nitrates. High pollutant concentrations from domestic, agricultural, industrial and nonpoint sources were observed from monitoring events due to inadequate sewage services and treatment facilities in the country. The objective of this paper was to present and evaluate the quality of the water bodies in the Philippines.

  • Vitamin E status affected by dietary high PUFA and Se was examined by biochemical and morphological means. Rats were fed four different diets(I : 15% p/s=1 control diet, II : 15% perilla oil diet, III : 15% perilla oil, vitamin mix -vitamin E, IV : 15% perilla oil, vitamin mix-vitamin E and salt mix -Se ) for $4\frac{1}{2}$ weeks. Various dietary treatments had no significant effects on body weight gains of rats. Activities of serum creatine phosphokinase known as an indicator of vitamin E deficiency were significantly higher( P < 0.001) in groups fed diets high in PUFA, regardless of the addition or omission of vitamin E from the vitamin mixture than those in control group. Vitamin E concentrations of serum and liver were affected by experimental diets and serum levels were more affected than those in liver. Electron microscopic observations of the liver revealed 1) the presence of swollen and degenerated mitochondria and lysosome-like body(II), and 2) markedly swollen and degenerated mitochondria, numerous lysosomes and decreased in size and number of microvilli along the bile canaliculus ( III, and 3) a remarkable accumulation of lipid droplets, nuclear pyknosis, degenerated mitochondria and increased number of lysosomes scattered along the cell junction in the hepatocytes (IV).

  • The effect of dietary supplementation of the two oriental medicinal prescriptions, Sypjeondaebotang or Jahyulyanggeuntang, on iron bioavailability was evaluated in rats which were depleted of iron by being fed an irondeficient diet for 4 weeks. Seventy two iron-depleted rats were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 24) , and fld one of the following experimental diets for 4 (n = 8), 12 (n = 8), and 25 days (n = 8) : Control diet (CD), Sypjeondaebotang-supplemented diet (SD), Jahyulyanggeuntang -supplemented diet (JD). The CD contained 20 mg Fe/kg diet as FeSO4, and the SD or JD was identical except that the respective oriental medicinal prescription extract was included at the level of 4 g/kg diet. Animals fed the SD and JD for 25 days consumed significantly less food (p<0.001), but showed no change in food efficiency ratio compared to those that were fed the CD. Serum iron concentration and transferrin saturation values were significantly higher in rats fed the SD for 25 days compared to those that were fed the CD for the same period (p < 0.05). The values of serum UIBC (p < 0.05) and TIBC (p > 0.05) were lower in rats fed the SD compared to those fed the CD. Dietary supplementation of Sypjeondaebotang during the period of iron repletion significantly increased blood levels of hemoglobin (p < 0.05) and hematocrit (p < 0.01) measured at day 12, and increased mean corpuscular volume (p < 0.05) measured at day 25, compared to the values for the CD rats. Regression analyses of hemoglobin-repletion bioassay data from rats fed the SD and JD showed the relative biological values of 123% and 99%, respectively, calculated against the slope for the CD rats. Apparent iron absorption and retention values were also significantly lower (p < 0.05) in rats fed the SD for 25 days than those for the CD rats. Based on the results from diverse biochemical indices of iron status and the chemical balance study, the effect of Jahyulyanggeuntang on iron bioavailability appears to be less prominent than that for Sypjeondaebotang. Taken together, these results indicate that Sypjeondaebotang has a positive effect in restoring iron depletion by increasing the iron bioavailability in rats.

  • Using dietary, anthropometric, and biochemical methods of evaluation, a nutritional survey was made of 81 seven-and eight-year-old children from two schools with different socioeconomic backgrounds in Daejon city, during the October of 1980. All the children were tall and heavy in comparison with 1976 Korean standard. School A children with relatively high socioeconomic levels showed higher value in length and lower value in weight than school B children with relatively low socioeconomic levels. Mean hemoglobin values were 13.3 (school A) and 12.8 (school B) g/100 ml and hematocrits were 39.7 and 37.9%, respectively. Anemic children were not many in both schools ( A ; 0-25%, B ; 12.5-15.0% ). Urea nitrogen/creatinine ratios were 9.2 (A) and 7.8 (B). The intake of animal foods was higher in school A owing to the higher intake of milks. The intakes of all nutrients except energy and calcium were comparable to or higher than Korean recommend dietary allowances (KRDA). Riboflavin intake wae deficient in school B only. Low socioeconomic school B children had significantly lower intakes of fats, calcium, and riboflavin than school A children. Energy intakes were low as 75.9 (A) and 83.2 (B) % of KRDA but their composition of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins were satisfactory in both schools. More than one-third of protein intake was animalorigin in both schools (A ; 1.40/3, B ; 1.10/3) and calcium intake was very low as 59.0%(A) and 45.8%(B). Education levels of parents, esp. mothers, were positively correlated with Kaup indice (in school A & B) and some nutrients intakes (in school A). In school B, number of siblings and birth order showed negative correlations with some nutrient intakes.

  • A 8-month-old, spayed female, Domestic shorthair cat lived in a shelter was presented with pelvic limbs ataxia and dysuria. Serum biochemical profile abnormalities were hyperproteinemia and decreased albumin/globulin (A:G) ratio (0.70). Results of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis were mixed cells pleocytosis with predominance neutrophils and an increase in protein concentration. In addition, feline coronavirus was detected by realtime RT-PCR in CSF. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings revealed lesions of the lumbar spinal cord. Based on clinical signs, MR finding, CSF analysis and realtime RT-PCR result in CSF, this case was diagnosed as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) associated meningomyelitis. Although prednisolone and mycophenolate mofetil were administrated, clinical signs were not resolved and progressed to tetraplegia and coma status. This case presentation describes that feline infectious peritonitis virus could affect the lumbar spinal cord only and cause meningomyelitis with pelvic limbs ataxia without other neurological signs.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine changes in nutrient intake in patients at nutritional risk. We included 106 malnourished patients who were admitted to Severance Hospital from March to September 2014. The average age was $59.0{\pm}11.6$ years old and 59 patients were male (59.7%). The majority of diagnosis was cancer (94.3%). We evaluated patients' nutritional status by scored patient-generated subjective global assessment (PG-SGA), anthropometric measurement (height, weight, body composition by Bioelectrical impedance analysis), hand grip strength, biochemical and dietary assessment. The patients' daily intakes of energy and protein ($1,019.5{\pm}706.4kcal$, $40.4{\pm}27.7g$) during hospitalization were significantly lower than their usual intakes ($1,382.0{\pm}499.8kcal$, $54.4{\pm}25.1g$, P<0.001). Serum levels of albumin, cholesterol, and total lymphocytes were significantly reduced during hospital stay. The negatively influencing factors for reduced dietary intake were anorexia (42.5%), abdominal distention (14.2%), pain (13.2%), and others. The results of this study could be used to establish baseline data for developing new strategies for nutritional intervention in malnourished patients.
