Rice (Oryza saliva L.) calli containing both embryogenic callus (EC) and non embryogenic callus (NEC) regions were initiated from the mature seed on MS medium supplemented with 2.0 mg/L 2,4-D, 0.5 mg/L kinetin. The calli were developed into two callus type which can be distinguished by visual examination depending on color and appearance. In order to illucidate the polypeptide composition between EC and NEC, the total protein extracted from two types of callus was analysed by electrophoresis. By one-dimesional anlaysis of SDS-PAGE and Isoelectric focusing, several protein bands showed quantitative and qualitative difference in each type of callus. The further analysis of the total protein with two-dimensional electrophoresis showed at least 20 EC specific protein and 10 NE specific protein. Also 3 specific protein spots showing micro heterogeneity of 90, 65, 50 kD were detected in EC, while a series of acidic heterologous protein spots were visualized in NEC.in NEC.
A microbial strain having high keratinase activity was isolated from the soil of poultry factories of Gyeonggi or Chungcheong-do. The isolated strain was identified as Bacillus sp. based on its morphological and biochemical characteristics. In this study, the optimal conditions for the production of keratinase by this strain were investigated. The optimal medium composition for the keratinase production was determined to be 3.5% chicken feather as carbon source, 1.0% tryptone as organic nitrogen source, 1.0% $KNO_3$ as inorganic nitrogen source and 0.05% KCl, 0.05% $KH_2PO_4$, 0.03% $K_2HPO_4$ as mineral source and 0.01% yeast extract as growth factor. The optimal temperature and pH was $40^{\circ}C$ and 8.5 with shaking culture (200 rpm), respectively. The maximum keratinase production reached to 123 units/ml after 42 hr of cultivation under the optimal condition. When the hair was used as the sole carbon source, the maximum enzyme activity was 88 units/ml after 120 hr and in this case, the hair added in the medium was not degraded completely but got thinner than the control by 20%.

The purpose of this study is to define the normal findings of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the clinically healthy Beagle dogs and to provide basic information in diagnosis of neurologic disorders. CSF obtained from 13 clinically healthy dogs was examined for total and differential cell counts, total protein concentration, glucose and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentration, specific gravity, turbidity, and protein electrophoresis. On gross examination, CSF samples evaluated were clear and colorless. Few red blood cells and nucleated cells were present. The mean concentration of glucose and LDH examined were 65.8 mg/dl and 2.7 mg/dl, respectively. The cellular components of CSF samples based on differential counts were monocytes (41.9%), activated macrophages (35.8%), lymphocytes (20.0%), neutrophils (1.6%), and eosinophils (0.7%). The fractions of electrophoretic protein in CSF were albumin (52.7%), alpha-globulin (16.5%), beta-globulin (24.8%), and gamma-globulin (3.0%). Results of albumin quota were ranged from 0.15 to 0.38. In conclusion, this study provided normal composition of CSF in Beagle dogs.

For both oxygen reduction (ORR) and hydrogen oxidation reactions (HOR) of proton electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), alloying Pt with another transition metal usually results in a higher activity relative to pure Pt, mainly due to electronic modification of Pt and bifunctional behaviour of alloy surface for ORR and HOR, respectively. However, activity and stability are closely related to the preparation of alloy nanoparticles. Preparation conditions of alloy nanoparticles have strong influence on surface composition, oxidation state, nanoparticle size, shape, and contamination, which result from a large difference in redox priority of metal precursors, intrinsic properties of metals, increasedreactivity of nanocrystallites, and interactions with constituents for the synthesis such as solvent, stabilizer, and reducing agent, etc. Carbon-supported Pt-Ni alloy nanoparticles were prepared by the borohydride reduction method in anhydrous solvent. Pt-Ru alloy nanoparticles supported on carbon black were also prepared by the similar synthetic method to that of Pt-Ni. Since electrocatalytic reactions are strongly dependent on the surface structure of metal catalysts, the atom-leveled design of the surface structure plays a significant role in a high catalytic activity and the utilization of electrocatalysts. Therefore, surface-modified electrocatalysts have attracted much attention due to their unique structure and new electronic and electrocatalytic properties. The carbon-supported Au and Pd nanoparticles were adapted as the substrate and the successive reduction process was used for depositing Pt and PtM (M=Ru, Pd, and Rh) bimetallic elements on the surface of Au and Pd nanoparticles. Distinct features of the overlayers for electrocatalytic activities including methanol oxidation, formic acid oxidation, and oxygen reduction were investigated.
The trumpet shell Charonia sauliae is an endangered and valuable species with potential for aquaculture. For artificial propagation of C. sauliae, the effects of three different food microalgae on the development, growth, and survival rate of the larvae and spat were investigated. For the larval feeding experiments, we utilized six microalgae species as food sources, namely Pavlova lutheri, Tetraselmis suecica, Nannochloris oculata, Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros calcitrans, and Phaeodactylum tricornutum; for the larval and spat growth and survival experiments, we utilized T. suecica, C. calcitrans, and P. tricornutum. The results showed that the temporal digestion index (TDI) for the veliger larvae was significantly different for C. sauliae fed the different microalgae species (p < 0.05), that the T. suecica, C. calcitrans, and P. tricornutum cultivars were better suited for larval consumption (p < 0.05), and that the growth and survival of the larvae and spat were significantly influenced by food type, specifically P. tricornutum (p < 0.05). Further research is needed to evaluate the effects of other microalgae species, different algal concentrations, and biochemical composition on the growth and survival of C. sauliae.

Radiocarbon is a powerful tool for studies of carbon cycling in the ocean. Development of measurement technology of accelerator mass spectrometry has enabled researchers to measure radiocarbon even in specific compounds. In this paper, a brief introduction on radiocarbon measurement and reporting of radiocarbon data is provided. Researches that used radiocarbon measurements on bulk organic matter, organic compound classes, and specific organic compounds are reviewed. Examples include works to understand the cycling of particulate and dissolved organic matter, biochemical composition of particulate organic matter, post-depositional transport of sedimentary organic matter, selective incorporation of fresh organic matter by benthic organisms, chemoautotrophy by archaea, and sources of halogenated chemical compounds found in marine mammals.
The purpose of this study is to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of NRM granules which were newly developed as a combination product containing antacids, digestive enzymes and herb drugs for the treatmet of various symptoms of upper gastrointestinal disorders taking SGN granules of similiar but different composition as a control. One hundred and twenty one patients were randomly allocated to receive one pack of either NRM granule(80 cases) or SGN granules(41 cases) three times a day after meal and undergone symptomatic, endoscopic and clinical laboratory assessment before and after two weeks of treatment. The results were as follows; 1. All symptoms except anorexia showed improvements in more than 90% of total cases with each symptom in the NRM group. 2. The general improvement rate was 97.5% in NRM group, and was superior to the(92.5%) of SGN group. 3. Two cases of NRM group and one case of SGN group developed mild nausea, and onecase of SGN group developed mild epigastric soreness. No cases of the two groups developed laboratory(blood, biochemical, urine) abnormalities. 4. The overall clinical efficacy rate was 95.0% in NRM group, 87.8% in SGN group. kccording to the result of this trial, it was concluded that NRM granule was an effective and safe drug and(but not statistically significant) was slightly more efficient than SGN for treatment of various symptoms in upper gastrointestinal disorders.
Evaluation of energy in the diet is very important in animal nutrition because food intake is strongly influenced by the energy content of the diet. This means that the intake of other nutrients, such as amino acids, is affected by their ratio to energy content. Poultry can control their energy intake over a range of energy: protein ratios. Energy: protein ratio also affects the growth and body composition. Therefore we need to know what extent the relationship between energy and dietary protein influences the bird's performance. To predict the energy value of the diet or its chemical constituents, researchers have been working on modelling using the equations of the major biochemical pathways in terms of ATP generation and utilization. The activity of feeding and the metabolism caused by digestion and assimilation of food increase the animal's heat production and it can be measured by calorimetry technique. Theoretically, surplus amino acids which are not needed for protein synthesis stimulate an additional increase in metabolic rate and lead to increased energetic costs of catabolism and excretion. However, it has sometimes been shown that there was no measurable diet-induced thermoregulatory effect when an imbalanced amino acid mixture was fed. All these aspects are discussed in this review.
Variations in the definition of poultry meat quality exist because the quality traits are not solely based on intrinsic and extrinsic factors but also consumers' preference. Appearance quality traits (AQT), eating quality traits (EQT), and reliance quality traits (RQT) are the major factors focused by the consumer before buying good quality of poultry meat. AQT and EQT of poultry meat are controlled by physical and biochemical characteristics of muscle fibers which can be categorized into a total number of fibers (TNF), cross-sectional area of fibers (CSAF), and fiber type composition (FTC). In poultry meat, it has been shown that muscle fiber properties play a key role in meat quality because numerous studies have reported the relationships between quality traits and fiber characteristics. Despite intensive research has been carried out to manipulate the muscle fiber to improve poultry meat quality, demand in a rapid growth of poultry muscle has correlated to the deterioration in the meat quality. The present paper reviews the definition of poultry meat quality, meat quality traits, and variations of meat quality. Also, this review presents recent knowledge underlying the relationship between poultry meat quality traits and muscle fiber characteristics.
In order to utilize skin of bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana Shaw) as an alternative source of collagen, we investigated and compared biochemical and physical properties of collagens isolated from bullfrog skin. Two kinds of collagen (BSASC; bullfrog skin acid-soluble collagen and BSPSC; bullfrog skin pepsin-solubilized collagen) were isolated by subsequent treatments with acetic acid and pepsin. The amounts of skin collagen isolated in the subsequent treatments were 7.3% BSASC and 18.2% BSPSC on the basis of lyophilized bullfrog skin weight, respectively. According to the electrophoretic pattern and CM-cellulose column chromatogram, the BSASC has the chain composition of ${\alpha}1{\alpha}2{\alpha}3$ heterotrimer, and the BSPSC consists of two ${\alpha}$ chains of ${\alpha}1{\alpha}2$. In addition, the denaturation temperatures of all collagens tested were ranged from $30^{\circ}C\;to\;38^{\circ}C$. This study suggests that there is a possibility to use bullfrog skin collagen as an alternative source of collagen for industrial purposes, and subsequently it may increase the economical value of the bullfrog.
