Abalone shell is composed of 95 wt% $CaCO_3$ platelets and 5 wt% of a protein-rich organic matrix which acts as an adhesive layer, connecting aragonite tablets, thus maintaining the structural integrity of the composite. By mimicking abalone shell, we prepared a silicate plate/polymer nanocomposite by infiltrating PMMA between silicate layers and warm-pressing them at $200^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under 15 tons to make organic-inorganic composite materials. To examine the organic-inorganic composite materials after the warm-pressing procedure, the composite sample was analyzed with FE-SEM and TG. The bending strengths and densities of the composites prepared by a silicate plate and PMMA after the warm-pressing process were ~140 MPa and 1.5, respectively.
This study was conducted to improve control system of insect pests, especially western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, and two-spotted spider mites, Tetreanychus urticae, of rose greenhouses. Density of thrips was relatively higher in yellow flowers than in pink or redflowers, while there was no difference in density of two-spotted spider mites by flower colors. In pest control by an automatic monorail sprayer, 89% labor and 18.2% chemical savings, as compared to the conventional high pressure spray method, were achieved without lowering the pest control effectiveness. By using an adhesive agent in combination with acaricide, adhesion of chemical to crops increased by 25% and control effect on two-spotted spider mites increased by 20.5% as compared acaricide spray alone.

The article examines the impact response of the sandwich beam furnished by a novel bilayer core as inspired by the woodpecker's head architecture under different repeatedly exerted low-velocity impact loadings by employing the finite element package, ABAQUS. The sandwich beam forms four essential parts comprising bottom and top carbon fiber reinforced polymer laminates encasing bilayer core made of laterally arched solid hot melt adhesive material and aluminum honeycomb. Impact loadings are implemented repeatedly with a steel hemisphere impactor for various impact energies, 7.28 J, 9.74 J, and 12.63 J. Essentially, the commonly concentrated stresses at the impact region are regulated away by the arched core in all considered cases thus reducing the threat of failure. The sandwich beam can resist up to 5 continual impacts at 7.28 J and 9.74 J but only up to 3 times repeated loads at 12.63 J before visible failure is noticed. In the examination of several key impact performance indicators under numerous loading cases, the proposed beam demonstrates favorably up to 1.3-11.2 higher impact resistance efficacies compared to existing designs, therefore displaying an improvement in repeated impact resistance of the new design.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of nano-structured alumina surface coating on shear bond strength between Y-TZP ceramic and various dual-cured resin cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 90 disk-shaped zirconia specimens (HASS CO., Gangneung, Korea) were divided into three groups by surface treatment method: (1) airborne particle abrasion, (2) tribochemicalsilica coating, and (3) nano-structured alumina coating. Each group was categorized into three subgroups of ten specimens and bonded with three different types of dual-cured resin cements. After thermocycling, shear bond strength was measured and failure modes were observed through FE-SEM. Two-way ANOVA and the Tukey's HSD test were performed to determine the effects of surface treatment method and type of cement on bond strength (P<.05). To confirm the correlation of surface treatment and failure mode, the Chi-square test was used. RESULTS. Groups treated with the nano-structured alumina coating showed significantly higher shear bond strength compared to other groups treated with airborne particle abrasion or tribochemical silica coating. Clearfil SA Luting showed a significantly higher shear bond strength compared to RelyX ARC and RelyX Unicem. The cohesive failure mode was observed to be dominant in the groups treated with nano-structured alumina coating, while the adhesive failure mode was prevalent in the groups treated with either airborne particle abrasion or tribochemical silica coating. CONCLUSION. Nano-structured alumina coating is an effective zirconia surface treatment method for enhancing the bond strength between Y-TZP ceramic and various dual-cured resin cements.
Synthetic rubber based pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) usually containing SIS or SBS block copolymer, tackifier, plasticizer, and other additives are now widely used on various applications. As these PSAs are physically crosslinked and can be applied without the use of solvent, they are thermally processable and environmentally friendly. However these PSAs cannot be used in high temperature applications and in applications where solvent and chemical resistance properties are required. We developed the PSA adding UV curable system, such as thiol-ene system, to increase adhesion properties at elevated temperature. The adhesion properties such as probe tack, peel strength, shear adhesion failure temperature (SAFT) were evaluated. The probe tack test was conducted with varying probe materials and coating thickness of PSAs. Using the contact angle, the surface property of the cured PSAs was also observed.
The aim of this research was to investigate the manufacturing possibility of the paper sludge-synthetic fiber-wood fiber composite. Three levels of the formulation of paper sludge, synthetic fiber and wood fiber (5:5:90, 15:15:70, 25:25:50), two types of adhesive (PMDI, urea-formaldehyde resin) and three levels of density(0.7, 0.8, 0.9) were designed. From the test result, composites with similar or better properties, when compared with commercial fiberboard, appeared to be possible by the addition of up to 30~50% paper sludge and synthetic fiber into wood fiber.

Objectives: The need for proper wound closure is of paramount importance after any intra-oral surgery. Various wound closure techniques have been described in literature using traditional non-absorbable suture materials. These include like synthetic absorbable sutures, surgical staples and tissue adhesives. Cyanoacrylates are among the most commonly used biocompatible tissue adhesives. To evaluate and compare intraoral wound healing using 3-0 silk sutures and n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate after alveoloplasty. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 patients requiring bilateral alveoloplasty in the same arch (upper or lower) were included in this study. Patients with any pre-existing pathology or systemic disease were excluded. After alveoloplasty was performed, the wound was closed using 3-0 braided silk sutures on one side, and using n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate bio adhesive on the other side. Patients were evaluated based on the following parameters: time required to achieve wound closure; the incidence of immediate and postoperative hemostasis; the time to the use of the first rescue medication; the side where pain first arises; and the side where wound healing begins first. Results: Compared to 3-0 silk sutures, cyanoacrylate demonstrated better hemostatic properties, reduced operative time, reduced postoperative pain and better wound healing. Conclusion: These data suggest that cyanoacrylate glue is an adequate alternative to conventional sutures to close the surgical wound after alveoloplasty, and better than are 3-0 silk sutures.

The objective of this research was to develop environment-friendly adhesives for face fancy veneer bonding of engineered flooring. Urea-formaldehyde (UF)-tannin and melamine-formaldehyde (MF)/PVAc hybrid resin were used to replace UF resin in the formaldehyde-based resin system in order to reduce formaldehyde and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from the adhesives used between plywoods and fancy veneers. Wattle tannin powder (5 wt%) was added to UF resin and PVAc (30 wt%) to MF resin. These adhesive systems showed better bonding than commercial UF resin with a similar level of wood penetration. The initial adhesion strength was sufficient to be maintained within the optimum initial tack range. The standard formaldehyde emission test (desiccator method) and VOC analyzer were used to determine the formaldehyde and VOC emissions from engineered flooring bonded with commercial UF resin, UF-tannin and MF/PVAc hybrid resin. By desiccator method, the formaldehyde emission level of UF resin showed the highest but was reduced by replacing with UF-tannin and MF/PVAc hybrid resin. MF/PVAc hybrid satisfied the $E_1$ grade (below $1.5mg/{\ell}$). VOC emission results by VOC analyzer were similar with the formaldehyde emission results. TVOC emission was in the following order: UF > UF-tannin > MF/PVAc hybrid resin.

Statement of problem. Porcelain repair mainly involves replacement with composite resin, but the bond strength between composite resin and all-ceramic coping materials has not been studies extensively. Purpose. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of composite resin and ceramic etching pattern on shear bond strength of Empress2 ceramic and observe the change of microstructure of ceramic according to etching methods. Material and methods. Eighty-five cylinder shape ceramic specimens (diameter 5mm, IPS Empress 2 core materials) embeded by acrylic resin were used for this study. The ceramic were specimens divided into sixteen experimental groups with 5 specimens in each group and were etched with phosphoric acid(37%, 65%) & hydrofluoric acid (4%, 9%) according to different etching times(30s, 60s, 120s 180s). All etched ceramic surfaces were examined morphologically using SEM(scanning electron microscopy). Etched surfaces of ceramic specimens were coated with silane (Monobond-S) & adhesive(Heliobond) and built up composite resin using Teflon mold. Accomplished specimens were tested under shear loading until fracture on universal testing machine at a crosshead speed 1mm/min; the maximum load at fracture(kg) was recorded. Shear bond strength data were analyzed with one way ANOVA and Duncan tests.(P<.05) Results. Maximum shear bond strength was $30.07{\pm}2.41(kg)$ when the ceramic was etched with 4% hydrofluoric acid at 120s. No significant difference was found between phosphoric etchant group and control group with respect to shear bond strength. Conclusion. Empress 2 ceramic surface was not etched by phosphoric acid, but etched by hydrofluoric acid.
Injectable RGD-bioconjugated Mussel Adhesive Proteins (RGD-MAPs) composite hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) hydrogels provide local periodontal tissue for bone filling in periodontal surgery. Previously we developed a novel type of injectable self-supported hydrogel (2 mg/ml of RGD-MAPs/HPMC) based porcine nano hydroxyapatite (MPH) for dental graft, which could good handling property, biodegradation or biocompatibility with the hydrogel disassembly and provided efficient cell adhesion activity and no inflammatory responses. Herein, the aim of this work was to evaluate bone formation following implantation of MPH and collagen membrane in rabbit calvarial defects. Eight male New Zealand rabbits were used and four circular calvarial defects were created on each animal. Defects were filled with different graft materials: 1) collagen membrane, 2) collagen membrane with MPH, 3) collagen membrane with bovine bone hydroxyapatite (BBH), and 4) control. The animals were sacrificed after 2 and 8 weeks of healing periods for histologic analysis. Both sites receiving MPH and BBH showed statistically increased augmented volume and new bone formation (p < 0.05). However, there was no statistical difference in new bone formation between the MPH, BBH and collagen membrane group at all healing periods. Within the limits of this study, collagen membrane with MPH was an effective material for bone formation and space maintaining in rabbit calvarial defects.
