Permeation properties of concretes incorporating fly ash and silica fume

  • This paper conveys the effects of fly ash and silica fume incorporated in concrete at various replacement ratios on the durability properties of concretes. It is quite well known that concrete durability is as much important as strength and permeability is the key to durability. Permeability is closely associated with the voids system of concrete. Concrete, with less and disconnected voids, is assumed to be impermeable. The void system in concrete is straightly related to the mix proportions, placing, compaction, and curing procedures of concrete. Reinforced concrete structures, particularly those of subjected to water, are at the risk of various harmful agents such as chlorides and sulfate since the ingress of such agents through concrete becomes easy and accelerates as the permeability of concrete increases. Eventually, both strength and durability of concrete reduce as the time moves on, in turn; the service life of the concrete structures shortens. Mineral additives have been proven to be very effective in reducing permeability. The tests performed to accomplish the aim of the study are the rapid chloride permeability test, pressurized water depth test, capillarity test and compressive strength test. The results derived from these tests indicated that the durability properties of concretes incorporated fly ash and silica fume have improved substantially compared to that of without mineral additives regardless of the binder content used. Overall, the improvement becomes more evident as the replacement ratio of fly ash and silica fume have increased. With regard to permeability, silica fume is found to be superior to fly ash. Moreover, at least a 30% fly ash replacement and/or a replacement ratio of 5% to 10% silica fume have been found to be highly beneficial as far as sustainability is concerned, particularly for concretes subjected to chloride bearing environments.

용융 아연과 WC-Co 코팅층 내 코발트의 반응거동에 미치는 아연욕 중의 Al 첨가 영향 (Effect of Al Addition on the Reaction Behavior of Pure Cobalt with Molten Zinc)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Al addition on the reaction behavior of cobalt with molten zinc. Pure cobalt specimen was immersion tested in the three kinds of molten zinc (pure, 0.12%Al added and 0.24%Al added) baths at $460^{\circ}C,\;490^{\circ}C\;and\;520^{\circ}C$. For the understanding of degradation processes, specimens were analyzed with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), and electrochemical stripping method. When 0.12% and 0.24% Al was added in molten zinc baths, three intermetallic compounds layers of ${\gamma},\;{\gamma}_1,\;and\;{\gamma}_2$ were formed on the Co matrix and ${\beta}_1$ layer was not formed between the Co matrix and the ${\gamma}$ layer. Particles of CoAl intermetallic compound were formed at the interface between the ${\gamma}_2$ layer and zinc melt and they did not adhere to the Co-Zn intermetallic layer. Weight loss of the Co specimen increased as Al content in the molten zinc increased and the relationship of weight loss vs. immersion time followed parabolic rate law. Rate controlling process for the reaction rate of Co with Al added molten zinc was analyzed as the diffusion process of Al atom through a boundary layer between the ${\gamma}_2$ layer and the Al added zinc melt.

CSA 팽창재를 혼입한 강섬유 보강 콘크리트의 역학적 성능 및 균열 저항성능 평가 (Evaluation of Mechanical Properties and Crack Resistant Performance in Concrete with Steel Fiber Reinforcement and CSA Expansive Admixture)

  • 콘크리트의 취성파괴를 방지하기 위해 강섬유 보강재는 효과적인 복합재료이다. 그러나 시멘트 사용량이 많아지면 건조수축이 증가하고 이로 인해, 강섬유 보강재의 연성증가 효과가 제한될 수 있다. 팽창재를 사용한 콘크리트 내부의 강섬유 보강재는 화학적 프리스트레싱 효과가 발생하여 강섬유 보강효과를 증가시킬 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 CSA 팽창재와 강섬유 보강재를 혼입하여 콘크리트의 역학적인 특성을 분석하였다. 체적비 1~2%의 강섬유 보강재와 시멘트 중량의 10%의 CSA 팽창재를 혼입하였으며, 다양한 역학적 특성과 휨거동을 분석하였다. 강섬유 보강재를 혼입한 CSA 콘크리트는 인장강도와 초기균열강도의 증가를 나타냈으며, 균열후의 파괴에너지 증가와 같은 연성거동을 뚜렷하게 나타내었다. 적절한 팽창재 사용과 최적의 강섬유 보강재의 혼입률이 도출된다면 이들의 상호작용은 콘크리트의 취성을 더욱 효과적으로 제어할 수 있다.

벼의 수확작업 체계별 수확정기 결정에 관한 연구 (Study on the Optimum Harvest Timing for Different Operational Systems of Rice)

  • In this study, rice harvesting systems suitable to Korean situations and the optimum timing of these systems were determined, respectively, based on experimentally determined factors such as filed yield and the milling quantity and quality measured at various levels of the grain moisture content at harvest. Rice varieties used for the experiment were the AKIBARE (Japonica-type) and the SUWEON 251 (high yielding TONGIL sister-line variety), The harvesting systems studied by the experimental work of this study were traditional system with both the wet material and dry-material threshing system by use of binder with both the dry-material and wet-material threshings, and system by use of combine. Grain samples were taken from final products of the paddy rice harvested from the experiment a fields for each system to measure the recovery rates of the milled rice. The results may be summarized as follows; 1. The milling recovery rate of the AKIBARE variety had highest value within the range of the grain moisture at harvest, showing from 21 to 26 percent. The head-rice recovery for the same variety was a little greater in the wet-material threshing than in the dry-material threshing , higher values of which , were 20 to 25 percent , seen within the range of grain moisture at harvest regardless of the harvesting systems tested. 2. The milling recovery of the SUWEON 251 , when tested for different harvesting systems and harvesting grain moisture, did not show a statistically significant different. In contrast , head-rice recovery for the systems operated by the wet-material threshing was much greater than that by the -material threshing. The difference of the recoveries between these systems range from 2.6 to 4.7 percent. 3. An assessment of the optimum period of -harvest timing for each of the harve\ulcornersting systems tested were made bJ.sed on (a) the maximum total milled-rise yield and (b) the percentage reduction in the total milled-rice yield due to untimely harvest operations. The optimum period determined are: 23-19% for the ATD, AC, STD, SBW, STW systems, 25-21% for the ATW ani ABW systems, and 27-18% for the ABD, SBD, and SC systems, respectively.

부순모래를 사용한 초고강도 콘크리트의 레미콘 제조성능에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Ready-Mixed Concrete Manufacture Performance of Ultra-High Strength Concrete using the Crushed Sand)

  • In this study we measured the changes according to time respectively on the basis of 0, 30, 60 and 90 minutes, taking into consideration the decline in fluidity of concrete according to elapsed time to analyze manufacturing capability of batcher plant according to elapsed time of ready-mixed concrete manufactured in batcher plant, and offer basic data for mixture design of ultra-high strength concrete. The proportion of water-binder was 23.55, water content was 160kg/m3, proportion of replacement of crushed sand was 0, 20 and 40% at 3 level, and we applied to the same condition of triaxial component using blast furnace slag powder and silica fume as admixture. And to meet the demand of certain fluidity, we measured respectively on property before and after hardening of ultra-high strength concrete using superplasticizer. As a result of experiment, before hardening of ultra-high strength concrete showed the best fluidity in conditions of crushed sand replacement rates of 20% and superplasticizer composition of 1.95%, but it appeared that fluidity drops as time goes by in the same composition condition. And it appeared that when it comes to hardened, the changes of compression strength according to elapsed time by crushed sand replacement rates were within 1MPa. Therefore, it turned out that the difference of strength according to elapsed time was low and compression strength of 280dys in composition mentioned above appeared highly as 88MPa.

A319 알루미늄 합금 표면에 Al-36%Si 합금분말의 레이저 클래딩에 의한 내마모성 향상 (Laser Cladding with Al-36%Si Powder Paste on A319 Al Alloy Surface to Improve Wear Resistance)

  • A319 aluminum alloy containing 6.5% Si and 3.5% Cu as major alloying elements has been widely used in machinery parts because of its excellent castability and crack resistance. However it needs more wear resistance to extend its usage to the severe wear environments. It has been known that hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloy having more than 12.6% Si contains pro-eutectic Si particles, which give better wear resistance and lubrication characteristics than hypo-eutectic Al-Si alloy like A319 alloy. In this study, it was tried to clad hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloy on the surface of A319 alloy. In the experiments, Al-36%Si alloy powder was mixed with organic binder to make a fluidic paste. The paste was screen-printed on the A319 alloy surface, melted by pulsed Nd:YAG laser and alloyed with the A319 base alloy. As experimental parameters, the average laser power was changed to 111 W, 202 W and 280 W. With increasing the average laser power, the melting depth was changed to $142{\mu}m$, $205{\mu}m$ and $245{\mu}m$, and the dilution rate to 67.2 %, 72.4 % and 75.7 %, and the Si content in the cladding layer to 16.2 %, 14.6 % and 13.7 %, respectively. The cross-section of the cladding layer showed very fine eutectic microstructure even though it was hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloy. This seems to be due to the rapid solidification of the melted spot by single laser pulse. The average hardness for the three cladding layers was HV175, which was much higher than HV96 of A319 base alloy. From the block-on-roll wear tests, A319 alloy had a wear loss of 5.8 mg, but the three cladding layers had an average wear loss of 3.5 mg, which meant that an increase of 40 % in wear resistance was obtained by laser cladding.

  • Har dmaterials such as cemented carbides with or without coated layer, cermets, ceramics and diamond or c-BN high pressure sintered compact are used for cutting tools, wear -resistant parts, rock drilling bits and/or high pressure vessels. These hardmaterials contain not only hard phase, but also second consituent as the element for forming ductile phase and/or sintering aid, and the mechanical properties of each material depend on (1) the amount of the second constituent as well as (2) the grain size of the hard phase. The hardness of each material mainly depends on these two factors. The fracture strength, however, largely depends on other microstructur a1 factors as well as the above two factors. For all hardmaterials, the fracture strength is consider ably affected by (3) the size of microstructur a1 defect which acts as the fracture source. In cemented carbides, the following factors which are generated mainly due to the addition of the second constituent are also important; (4) the variation of the carbon content in the normal phase region free from V-phase and graphite phase, (5) the precipitation of $Co_3$ during heating at about $800^{\circ}C$,(6) the domain size of binder phase, and (7) the formation of ${\beta}$-free layer or Co-rich layer near the surface of sintered compacts. For cemented carbides coated with thin hard substance, the important factors are as follows; (8) the kind of coated substance, (9) the formation of ${\eta}$-phase layer at the interface between coated layer and substrate, (10) the type of residual stress (tension or compression) in the coated layer which depends on the kind of coating method (CVD or PVD), and (11) the properties of the substrate, and (12) the combination, coherency and periodicity of multi-layers. In the lecture, the details of these factors and their effect on the strength will be explained.

고농축 복합화약 시뮬란트: Exact/Dechlorane 현탁계의 유변물성 (Highly Concentrated Polymer Bonded Explosive Simulant: Rheology of Exact/Dechlorane Suspension)

  • 에너지 고분자인 poly(BAMO-AMMO)와 유사한 특성을 갖는 폴리에틸렌 플라스토머인 Exact를 고분자 결합제로, RDX(research department explosive)와 유사한 특성을 갖는 dechlorane을 충전제로 사용한 고농축 복합화약 시뮬란트 현탁계의 유변물성을 연구하였다. 회분식 용융혼련기를 사용하여 현탁계의 혼화거동을 조사하였는데 상당한 점성소산열이 발생하였다. 충전율이 70 v% 이상에서는 토크의 지속적인 감소가 있었는데 이는 벽면 미끌어짐 현상에 기인한다고 사료되었다. SEM 관찰 결과 충전제 입자들은 잘 분산되어 있었고 혼화 조건의 영향은 크지 않은 것으로 판단되었다. 현탁계의 뚜렷한 전단박화(shear thinning) 특성으로 인하여 낮은 전단속도의 평판-평판 레오미터에서 측정이 어려운 고충전 현탁계도 높은 전단속도의 모세관 레오미터에서 유변물성 측정이 가능하였다.

물 결합재비 변화에 따른 프리믹스 시멘트를 사용한 고강도 콘크리트의 기초적 특성 (The Fundamental Properties of High-Strength Concrete Using Pre-mixed Cement Corresponding to Water Binder Ratio)

  • 본 연구는 프리믹스 시멘트를 사용한 고강도 콘크리트의 참고배합 제안에 관련한 것으로서 W/B변화에 따른 고강도 콘크리트의 기초적 특성을 분석하였다. 실험결과 목표 슬럼프 플로우 및 목표 공기량 확보를 위한 고성능감수제 및 AE제의 사용량은 W/B가 증가할수록 감소하는 것으로 나타났고, W/B 변화에 따른 응결시간은 W/B 20%를 제외한 여타의 배합의 경우 W/B가 커질 수록 지연되는 것으로 나타났다. W/B 변화에 따른 압축강도는 W/B가 증가할 수록 저하하였고, 목표 슬럼프플로우 변화에 따라서는 큰 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, B/W와 압축강도의 관계를 회귀식으로 나타낸 결과 상관계수 0.9646으로 높게 나타나 실제 실무 활용이 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

Strength and durability of concrete in hot spring environments

  • In this paper an experimental study of the influence of hot springs curing upon concrete properties was carried out. The primary variables of the investigation include water-to-binder ratio (W/B), pozzolanic material content and curing condition. Three types of hot springs, in the range $40-90^{\circ}C$, derived from different regions in Taiwan were adopted for laboratory testing of concrete curing. In addition, to compare with the laboratory results, compressive strength and durability of practical concrete were conducted in a tunnel construction site. The experimental results indicate that when concrete comprising pozzolanic materials was cured by a hot spring with high temperature, its compressive strength increased rapidly in the early ages due to high temperature and chloride ions. In the later ages, the trend of strength development decreased obviously and the strength was even lower than that of the standard cured one. The results of durability test show that concrete containing 30-40% Portland cement replacement by pozzolanic materials and with W/B lower than 0.5 was cured in a hot spring environment, then it had sufficient durability to prevent steel corrosion. Similar to the laboratory results, the cast-inplace concrete in a hot spring had a compressive strength growing rapidly at the earlier age and slowly at the later age. The results of electric resistance and permeability tests also show that concrete in a hot spring had higher durability than those cured in air. In addition, there was no neutralization reaction being observed after the 360-day neutralization test. This study demonstrates that the concrete with enough compressive strength and durability is suitable for the cast-in-place structure being used in hot spring areas.
