Two-component models (normal star and degenerate star components) are the simplest realization of clusters with a mass spectrum because the high mass stars quickly evolve off leaving degenerate stars behind, while low mass stars survive for a long time as main-sequence stars. In the present study we examine the post-collapse evolution of globular clusters using two-component Fokker-Planck models that include three-body binary heating. We confirm that a simple parameter ${\epsilon}{\equiv} (E_{tot}/t_{rh})/(E_c/t_{rc})$ well describes the occurrence of gravothermal oscillations of two-component clusters. Also, we find that the degree of instability depends on the steepness of the mass function such that clusters with a steeper mass function are less exposed to instability.
The emission lines of the ultraviolet region and the light curves of the optical region have been analyzed to investigate the distorted light curves of SZ Psc. The Mg II emission lines of the IUE spectra confirmed that the chromospheric activity of SZ Psc occurs on the K1 IV star. The distorted light curves in the optical region have been analyzed by the spot model where the spots are on the K1 IV star as the result of the chromospheric activity. The complete photometric solution could be deduced for SZ Psc by the good fitness with the spot model.
We report on a systematic analysis of the spin and superorbital modulations of the high-mass X-ray binary 4U 0114+650, which consists of the slowest spinning neutron star known. Utilizing dynamic power spectra, we found that the spin period varied dramatically during the RXTE ASM and Swift BAT observations. This variation consists of a long-term spin-up trend, and two ~1,000 day and one ~600 day random walk epochs previously, MJD 51,000, ~MJD 51,400-52,000, and ~MJD 55,100-56,100. We further found that the events appear together with depressions of superorbital modulation amplitude. This provides evidence of the existence of an accretion disk, although the physical mechanism of superorbital modulation remains unclear. Furthermore, the decrease of the superorbital modulation amplitude may be associated with the decrease of mass accretion rate from the disk, and may distribute the accretion torque of the neutron star randomly in time.
UBV observations of VV Cep were made in 1988-1992 as a part of the Ten-year Observing Program for Long Period Eclipsing Binary Stars(1982-1992) at Yonsei University Observatory. In addition to these the observations in the longer passbands in R and I are also made in the 1991-1992 season at the same observatory. Atmospheric extinction coefficinets determined by a comparison star 20 Cap for B and V each night have been deduced a linear relation, $K_B$=0.159+1.066kV. In this paper, light curves of this star in BVRI passbands for the 1991-1992 season only are presented. Two periodic light variations of both long-term and short-term are found as for 90 days and 20 days, respectively.
We have develped a four-channel photoelectric photometer for the 61cm telescope of Sobaeksan Astronomy Observatory using optical fiber. We observed a standard star with each channel to check the efficiency difference between the channels, and found no differences. To calibrate the observing accuracy and efficiency, we have observed a short period W UMa type eclipsing binary star, BV Dra. Test observations show that the photometer is very stabel and the accuracy of the data is also increased. The observing efficiency is very increased compared with that of single channel photometer ; at least five times faster than older one in the case of one filter observation.
Gravitational-wave (GW) sources for the next decades would be in majority binaries consisting of neutron stars and/or black holes reside in the extragalactic environment. For example, GW170817 was the first extragalactic neutron star - neutron star binary found by GW observations and it was proved the power of multi-messenger astronomy (MMA) including the KMTNet observations. With the ever increased sensitivity, the $3^{rd}$ observation run (O3) led by the advanced LIGO and advanced Virgo this year aims to search for more 'standard' populations as well as 'exotic' ones expected by stellar evolution. I will present highlights of on-going efforts by researchers in Korea and those in abroad for estimating physical parameters of a source. Mass, spin, distance, and location are prerequisite information to constrain theoretical understanding of the source formation and evolution. Furthermore, these information are to be shared with the international community for follow-up multi-messenger observations. I will present the observational accuracy expected for the future GW observations and discuss their implications. If time allows, I will make a few remarks on prospects of O3 with KAGRA collaborations, which many domestic researchers are closely involved in.
Recent observation of the neutron star merger event, GW170817, through both gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic wave (EM) observations opened a new way of exploring the universe, namely, multi-messenger astronomy (MMA). One of the keys to the success of MMA is a rapid identification of EM counterpart. We will introduce GW follow-up observation project in Korea for hunting GW EM counterpart rapidly and its strategy for prioritization of GW source host galaxy candidates. Our method relies on recent simulation results regarding plausible properties of GW source host galaxies and the low latency localization map from LIGO/Virgo. We will show a test result for both binary neutron star merger events using previous event and describe observing strategy with our facilities for GW events during the ongoing LIGO/Virgo O3 run. Finally, we report the results of optical/NIR follow-up observation of GW190425, the first neutron.
Since the first direct detection of the gravitational waves in 2015, more than 50 events coming from the merging of compact binaries composed of black holes and neutron stars have been observed. The simultaneous detection of gravitational waves and electromagnetics waves from the merging of neutron stars opened up multi-messenger astronomy. The forthcoming observations with better sensitivity by the network of ground based detectors will enrich the gravitational wave source populations and provide valuable information regarding stellar evolution, dynamics of dense stellar systems, and star formation history across the cosmic time. The precision of the Hubble constant from the distance measurement of gravitational sources will improve with more binary neutron star events are observed together with the aftweglows. I will also briefly cover the expected scientiic outcomes from the future detectors that are sensitive to much lower frequenies than current detectors.
Black hole binary candidates are known to be composed of a black hole with 10 $M_{\odot}$ and a K or M type companion. Because the companion is believed to fill the Roche lobe that is very aspherical, the light curves of black hole binaries are characterized by an ellipsoidal variation. It has been known that the ellipsoidal light curves exhibit asymmetric maximum brightness at the orbital phases 0.25 and 0.75, which has been attributed to star spots or the hot impact points of the accretion flow on to the accretion disk around the black hole. In this paper, it is pointed out that the special relativistic beaming effect contributes to the asymmetry of several percent often observed in the light curves. The typical orbital velocity 400 km $s^{-1}$ observed in black hole binaries may induce the temperature difference $\DeltaT/T$ ~ 1/400 of the late type companion star in the observer`s rest frame, because of the special relativistic Doppler beaming effect. This difference in temperature can result in several per cent of brightness sensitively dependent on the wavelength band, which is comparable to what has been observed in most black hole binary candidates. Considering the significant contribution of the special relativistic Doppler beaming effect, we conclude that the estimation of the sizes and temperatures of the star spots or the hot impact point needs serious revision.

New multiband BVRI light curves of NSVS 1461538 were obtained as a byproduct during the photometric observations of our program star PV Cas for three years from 2011 to 2013. The light curves indicate characteristics of a typical W-subtype W UMa eclipsing system, displaying a flat bottom at primary eclipse and the O'Connell effect, rather than those of an Algol/b Lyrae eclipsing variable classified by the northern sky variability survey (NSVS). A total of 35 times of minimum lights were determined from our observations (20 timings) and the SuperWASP measurements (15 ones). A period study with all the timings shows that the orbital period may vary in a sinusoidal manner with a period of about 5.6 yr and a small semi-amplitude of about 0.008 day. The cyclical period variation can be interpreted as a light-time effect due to a tertiary body with a minimum mass of 0.71 M⊙. Simultaneous analysis of the multiband light curves using the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney binary model shows that NSVS 1461538 is a genuine W-subtype W UMa contact binary with the hotter primary component being less massive and the system shows a low mass ratio of q(mc/mh)=3.51, a high orbital inclination of 88.7°, a moderate fill-out factor of 30 %, and a temperature difference of ΔT=412 K. The O'Connell effect can be similarly explained by cool spots on either the hotter primary star or the cool secondary star. A small third-light corresponding to about 5 % and 2 % of the total systemic light in the B and V bandpasses, respectively, supports the third-body hypothesis proposed by the period study. Preliminary absolute dimensions of the system were derived and used to look into its evolutionary status with other W UMa binaries in the mass-radius and mass-luminosity diagrams. A possible evolution scenario of the system was also discussed in the context of the mass vs mass ratio diagram.
