MgO recently has been regarded as the alternative material for replacement of cement. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of accelerated carbonation on the strength development of MgO-based binder which is binary mixtures of magnesium oxide (MgO) with portland cement (PC) or ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) or fly ash (FA). The compressive strengths of all binders were higher in the 20% $CO_2$ condition and for longer curing time. The strength were generally higher as the following order: MgO/PC > MgO/GGBS > MgO/FA system. The binder composed of 20% MgO and 80% PC showed highest compressive strength (38.0MPa) which was higher than PC. The correlation analysis of the porosity and compressive strength showed that compressive strength was higher when porosity was lower. The hydration and carbonation products of MgO including brucite ($Ca(OH)_2$), magnesite ($MgCO_3$) and nesquehonite ($MgCO_3{\cdot}3H_2O$) presumably filled the pores and contributed to strength development. Thermogravimetric analyses elucidated that 0.34 kg of $CO_2$ could be stored the 50% MgO/50% PC binder which performed the maximum $CO_2$ uptake at 20% $CO_2$ condition.
The water sorption isotherms of individual insoluble components of corn starch, isolated soybean protein (ISP) and casein and their binary mixtures of corn starch-lSP and corn starch-casein were measured and analyzed. BET monolayer values and Smith plot parameters from the results of sorption isotherms were calculated by mass balance concept . The comparisons between experimental and predicted values resulted in an error of 2.29% for equilibrium moisture content and an error of 2.95% in monolayer value for the mixture 50% corn starch-50% ISP. On the other hand , for the mixture 50% corn starch-50% casein the errors were 2.66% and-5.34%, respectively.
In order to evaluate the effects of vehicles and penetration enhancers on skin permeation of apomorphine, the skin permeation rates of apomorphine from vehicles of different composition were determined using Franz diffusion cells fitted with excised rat skins. Solubility of apomorphine in various solvents was investigated to select a vehicle suitable for the percutaneous absorption of apomorphine. The solvents used were propylene glycol (PG), $Transcutol^{\circledR},\;Labrasol^{\circledR},\;Labrafac hydro WL^{\circledR},\;Labrafil WL 2609 BS^{\circledR}$ and isopropyl alcohol. Even though permeation rates of apomorphine from each vehicle were low $(0.008-0.36\;{\mu}g/cm^2/hr)$, the combination of PG and $Labrafac^{\circledR}$ increased it significantly. The permeation rates of apomorphine from $PG/Labrafac^{\circledR}$ mixtures increased as the volume fraction of PG in the mixture increased. The maximum permeation rate of $18\;{\mu}g/cm^2/hr$ was achieved at 30% of PG, which decreased with further increase of PG fraction. A series of fatty acids, alcohols and monoterpenes were employed as penetration enhancers. Incorporation of each enhancer in the $PG/Labrafac^{\circledR}$ (30:70) mixture at the level of 10% improved the skin permeation significantly. The highest permeation rate, $117\;{\mu}g/cm^2/hr$, was attained with myristic acid.

The environmental tracers tritium/helium-3 (3H/3He) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were investigated in ground water from Jeju Island, Korea, a basaltic volcanic island. The apparent 3H/3He and CFC-12 ages were in relatively good agreement in samples with low concentrations of terrigenic He. Ground water mixing was evaluated by comparing 3H and CFC-12 concentrations with mixing models, which distinguished old water with negligible 3H and CFC-12, young water with piston flow, and binary mixtures of the two end members. The ground water CFC-12 age is much older in water from wells completed in confined zones of the hydro-volcanic Seoguipo formation in coastal areas than in water from the basaltic aquifer. Comparison of major element concentrations in ground water with the CFC-12 age shows that nitrate contamination processes contribute more solutes in young water than are derived from water-rock interactions in non-contaminated old water. Chemical evolution of ground water resulting from silicate weathering in basaltic rocks reaches the zeolite-smectite phase boundary. The calcite saturation state of ground water increased with the CFC-12 apparent (piston flow) age. In agricultural areas, the temporal trend of nitrate concentration in ground water was consistent with the known history of chemical fertilizer use on Jeju Island, but the response of nitrate concentration in ground water to nitrogen inputs follows an approximate 10-year delay. Based on mass balance calculations, it was estimated that about 40% of the nitrogen applied by fertilizers reached the water table and contaminated ground water resources when the fertilizer use was at the highest level.
MFI(Mobil Five) structured hydrophobic ZSM-5 zeolite membrane was used for selective pervaporation of trichlorinated organic compounds(trichloromethane, trichloroethane, trichloroethylene) from their aqueous solutions. ZSM-5 zeolite membrane was hydrothermally synthesized on the inside of a porous stainless steel tube by secondary growth employing ZSM-5 seed powders. Separation factors for each binary mixtures were observed $16{\sim}66$ for trichloromethane/water, $3.3{\sim}4.6$ for trichloroethane/water and $1.4{\sim}8$ for trichloroethylene/water at the experimental conditions of the feed mole fraction from 0.0001 to 0.001 with temperature ranged $25{\sim}35^{\circ}C$.
The autoignition temperatures (AITs) of solvent mixture was important index for the safe handling of flammable liquids which constitute the solvent mixtures. This study measured the AITs and ignition delay time for n-propanol and formic acid system by using ASTM E659 apparatus. The AITs of n-Propanol and Formic acid which constituted binary system were $435^{\circ}C$ and $498^{\circ}C$, respectively. The experimental AITs of n-propanol and formic acid system were a good agreement with the calculated AITs by the proposed equations with a few A.A.D. (average absolute deviation). And n- Propanol and formic acid system was shown the minimum autoignition temperature behavior (MAITB).
Software program to predict the packing density of multi-sized and multi-component particulate system was developed. For this purpose, the experiment to measure the packing density of AP (ammonium perchlorate) and Al (aluminum) particles with different sizes and their mixtures was carried out. The packing densities obtained from various experiments were compared with the predicted data from the developed software program. In the case of the packing density of the binary system, which is comprised of two different size particles and/or two different components, the relative errors were ranged 0.25~13.13%, and in the same venue the relative errors of the ternary system were 0.25~13.13%. Agreement between experimental data and the predicted results is reasonably accurate. In order to achieve the targeted packing density, the software program calculated the contour of the component particles and this will contribute the formulation of optimal packing systems.
The stereotype of flexible MOFs(Amino-MIL-53) and carbonized porous carbon prepared from renewable resources is successfully synthesized for $CO_2$ reduction application. The textural properties of these microporous materials are investigated, and their $CO_2$ storage capacity and separation performance are evaluated. Owing to the combined effects of $CO_2-Amino$ interaction and its flexibility, a $CO_2$ uptake of $2.5mmol\;g^{-1}$ is observed in Amino-MIL-53 at 20 bar 298 K. In contrast, $CH_4$ uptake in Amino-MIL-53 is very low up to 20 bar, implying potential sorbent for $CO_2/CH_4$ separation. Carbonized samples contain a small quantity of metal residues(K, Ca, Mg, S), resulting in naturally doped porous carbon. Due to the trace metal, even higher $CO_2$ uptake of $4.7mmol\;g^{-1}$ is also observed at 20 bar 298 K. Furthermore, the $CH_4$ storage capacity is $2.9mmol\;g^{-1}$ at 298 K and 20 bar. To evaluate the $CO_2$ separation performance, the selectivity based on ideal adsorption solution theory for $CO_2/CH_4$ binary mixtures on the presented porous materials is investigated.
Ferulic acid (3-methoxy, 4-hydroxy cinnamic acid) is a flavoid component possessing antioxidant property. The compound is currently under development as a new drug candidate for the treatment of the dementia. The objective of this preformulation study was to determine the physicochemical properties of ferulic acid. The n-octanol to water partition coefficients of ferulic acid were 0.375 and 0.489 at the pHs of 3 and 10, respectively. Accelerated stability study for ferulic acid indicated that the t 90 value for the drug was estimated to be 459 days at $25^{\circ}C$. Ferulic acid was also found to be unstable under the relative humidity of more than 76%, probably because of the hygroscopic nature of the drug. In order to study compatibility of ferulic acid with typical excipients, potential change in differential scanning calorimetry spectrum was studied in 1: 1 binary mixtures of ferulic acid and typical pharmaceutical excipients (e.g., Aerosil, Avicel, CMC, Eudragit, lactose, PEG, PVP, starch and talc). Avicel, CMC, PVP and starch were found to be incompatible with ferulic acid, indicating the addition of these excipients may complicate the manufacturing of the formulation for the drug. Particle size distribution of ferulic acid powder was in the size range of 10-190 $\mu$m with the mean particle size of 61 $\mu$m. The flowability of ferulic acid was apparently inadequate, indicating the granulation may be necessary for the processing of the drug to solid dosage forms. Two polymorphic forms were obtained by recrystallization from various solvents used in formulation. New polymorphic form of ferulic acid, Form II, was obtained by recrystallization from 1,4-dioxane. The equilibrium solubility for Form I was approximately twice of that for Form II. The dissolution rate of Form II was higher than that of Form I in the early phase (<6 min). Therefore, these physicochemical information has to be taken in the consideration for the formulation of ferulic acid.
