Constitutive modeling that could reasonably predict and effectively evaluate the post-peak structural behavior while eliminating the mesh-dependency in numerical simulation remains to be developed for general engineering applications. Based on the previous work, a simple one-dimensional modeling procedure is proposed to predict and evaluate the post-peak response, as characterized by the evolution of localized strain field, of a steel member to monotonically uniaxial tension. The proposed model extends the classic one-dimensional softening with localization model as introduced by (Schreyer and Chen 1986) to account for the localization length, and bifurcation and rupture points. The new findings of this research are as follows. Two types of strain-softening functions (bilinear and nonlinear) are proposed for comparison. The new failure criterion corresponding to the constitutive modeling is formulated based on the engineering strain inside the localization zone at rupture. Furthermore, a new mathematical expression is developed, based on the strain rate inside and outside the localization zone, to describe the displacement field at which bifurcation occurs. The model solutions are compared with the experimental data on four low-carbon cylindrical steel bars of different lengths. For engineering applications, the model solutions are also compared to the experimental data of a cylindrical steel bar system (three steel bars arranged in series). It is shown that the bilinear and nonlinear softening models can predict the energy dissipation in the post-peak regime with an average difference of only 4%.

Low cycle fatigue characteristics of cast aluminum alloy A356 with a yield strength and ultimate strength of 229 and 283 MPa respectively was evaluated using smooth axial specimen under strain controlled condition. Reversals to failure ranged from 16 to 107. The cast aluminum alloy exhibited cyclically strain-gardening behavior. The results of low cycle fatigue tests indicated that the conventional low cycle fatigue tests indicated that the conventional low cycle fatigue life model was not a satisfactory representation of the data. This occurred because the elastic strain-life curve was not-log-log linear and this phenomena caused a nonconservative and unsafe fatigue life prediction at both extremes of long and short lives. A linear log-log total strain-life model and a bilinear log-log elastic strain-life model were proposed in order to improve the representation of data compared to the conventional low cycle fatigue life model. Both proposed fatigue life models were statistically analyzed using F tests and successfully satisfied. However, the low cycle fatigue life model generated by the bilinear log-log elastic strain-life equation yielded a discontinuous curve with nonconservatism in the region of discontinuity. Among the models examined, the linear log-log total strain-life model provided the best representation of the low cycle fatigue data. Low cycle fatigue life prediction method based on the local strain approach could conveniently incorporated both proposed fatigue life models.

In th is paper, to predicting the large deformation and cyclic plastic behavior of steel members under loading, 3-Dimensional elastic-plastic FE analysis method is developed by using finite deformation theory and proposed cyclic plasticity model. finite deformation theory, described the large deformation, is formulated by using Updated-lagrangian formulation and Green's strain tensor, Jaumann's derivative of Kirchoff stress. Also, cyclic plasticity model proposed by author is applied to developed analysis method. To verification of developed analysis method, analysis result of steel plate specimen compare to the analysis result using infinitesimal deformation theory and test result. Also, load-displacement and deflection shape, analysis result of pipe-section steel column, compare to test result. The good agreement between analysis result and experiment result shown that developed 3-dimensional finite element analysis can be predict the large deformation and cyclic plastic behavior of steel members.
Temperature-induced responses, such as strains and displacements, are related to the boundary conditions. Therefore, it is required to determine the boundary conditions to establish a reliable bridge model for temperature-induced responses analysis. Particularly, bridge bearings usually present nonlinear behavior with an increase in load, and the nonlinear boundary conditions cause significant effect on temperature-induced responses. In this paper, the bridge nonlinear boundary conditions were simulated as bilinear translational or rotational springs, and the boundary parameters of the bilinear springs were identified based on the measured temperature-induced responses. First of all, the temperature-induced responses of a simply support beam with nonlinear translational and rotational springs subjected to various temperature loads were analyzed. The simulated temperature-induced strains and displacements were assumed as measured data. To identify the nonlinear translational and rotational boundary parameters of the bridge, the objective function based on the temperature-induced responses is then created, and the nonlinear boundary parameters were further identified by using the nonlinear least squares optimization algorithm. Then, a beam structure with nonlinear translational and rotational springs was simulated as a numerical example, and the nonlinear boundary parameters were identified based on the proposed method. The numerical results show that the proposed method can effectively identify the parameters of the nonlinear boundary conditions. Finally, the boundary parameters of a real arch bridge were identified based on the measured strain data and the proposed method. Since the bearings of the real bridge do not perform nonlinear behavior, only the linear boundary parameters of the bridge model were identified. Based on the bridge model and the identified boundary conditions, the temperature-induced strains were recalculated to compare with the measured strain data. The recalculated temperature-induced strains are in a good agreement with the real measured data.
Volume of concrete slab changes by temperature and moisture effects. At that time, tensile stress develops because the slab volume change is restrained by friction resistance between the slab and subbase, and then crack occurs occasionally. Accordingly, researchers have made efforts to figure out the friction characteristics between the slab and subbase by performing push-off tests. Lately, researches to analyze concrete pavement behavior by the friction characteristics have been performed by finite element method. In this study, The friction characteristics between the slab and subbase were investigated based on the friction test results for lean concrete, aggregate, and asphalt subase widely used in Korean concrete pavements. The energy method bilinearizing relation between nonlinear friction resistance and displacement were suggested. The friction test was modeled by 3-D finite element program, ABAQUS, and the model was verified by comparing the analyzed results to the test results. The bilinear model developed by the energy method was validated by comparing analysis results obtained by using the nonlinear and bilinear friction resistance displacement relation as input data. A typical Korean concrete pavement was modeled by ABAQUS and EverFE and analyzed results were compared to evaluate applicability of the bilinear model.

This paper focuses on the finite element (FE) response sensitivity and reliability analyses considering smooth constitutive material models. A reinforced concrete frame is modeled for FE sensitivity analysis followed by direct differentiation method under both static and dynamic load cases. Later, the reliability analysis is performed to predict the seismic behavior of the frame. Displacement sensitivity discontinuities are observed along the pseudo-time axis using non-smooth concrete and reinforcing steel model under quasi-static loading. However, the smooth materials show continuity in response sensitivity at elastic to plastic transition points. The normalized sensitivity results are also used to measure the relative importance of the material parameters on the structural responses. In FE reliability analysis, the influence of smoothness behavior of reinforcing steel is carefully noticed. More efficient and reasonable reliability estimation can be achieved by using smooth material model compare with bilinear material constitutive model.
Elastic-plastic behavior of nuclear power plant elbow piping under seismic loads has been conducted in this study. Finite element analyses are performed using classical Bilinear kinematic hardening model (BKIN) and Multilinear kinematic hardening model (MKIN) as well as a nonlinear kinematic hardening model (Chaboche model). The influence of internal pressure and seismic loading on ratcheting strain of elbow pipe is studied by means of the three models. The results found that the predicted results of Chaboche model is maximum, closely followed by the predicted results of MKIN model, and the minimum is the predicted results of BKIN model. Moreover, comparisons of analysis results for each plasticity model against predicted results for a equivalent cyclic loading elbow component and for a simplified piping system seismic test are presented in the paper.
Tunnels offer myriad benefits for modern countries, and understanding their behavior under loads is critical. This paper analyzes and evaluates the damage to buried horseshoe tunnels under soil pressure and traffic loading. To achieve this, a numerical model of this type of tunnel is first created using ABAQUS software. Then, fracture mechanics theory is applied to investigate the fracture and damage of the horseshoe tunnel. The numerical analysis is based on the damage plasticity model of concrete, which describes the inelastic behavior of concrete in tension and compression. In addition, the reinforcing steel is modeled using the bilinear plasticity model. Damage contours, stress contours, and maximum displacements illustrate how and where traffic loading alters the response of the horseshoe tunnel. Based on the results, the fracture mechanism proceeded as follows: initially, damage started at the center of the tunnel bottom, followed by the formation of damage and micro-cracks at the corners of the tunnel. Eventually, the damage reached the top of the concrete arch with increasing loading. Therefore, in the design of this tunnel, these critical areas should be reinforced more to prevent cracking.
This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on the seismic responses of the steel cabinet facility considering the nonlinear behavior of connections and site-response effects. Three finite element (FE) models with differences of type and number of connections between steel plates and frame members have been developed to demonstrate adequately dynamic responses of structures. The screw connections with the bilinear force-deformation relationship are proposed to represent the inelastic behavior of the cabinet. The experiment is carried out to provide a verification with improved FE models. It shows that the natural frequencies of the cabinet are sensitive to the plate and frame connectors. The screw connections reduce the free vibration compared to the weld one, with decreased values of 2.82% and 4.87% corresponding to front-to-back and side-to-side directions. Additionally, the seismic responses are investigated for various geological configurations. Input time histories are generated so that their response spectrums are compatible with a required response spectrum via the time-domain spectral matching. The results indicate that both site effects and nonlinear behavior of connections affect greatly on the seismic response of structures.
With a quasi-three point bending apparatus, ratcheting deformation is studied experimentally on a pressurized austenitic stainless steel Z2CND18.12N pipe under bending load and vertical displacement control, respectively. The characteristic of ratcheting behavior of straight pipe under both control methods is achieved and compared. The cyclic bending loading and internal pressure influence ratcheting behavior of pressurized straight pipe significantly under loading control and the ratcheting characteristics are also highly associated with the cyclic displacement and internal pressure under displacement control. They all affect not only the saturation of the ratcheting strain but the ratcheting strain rate. In addition, ratcheting simulation is performed by elastic-plastic finite element analysis with ANSYS in which the bilinear model, Chaboche model, Ohno-Wang model and modified Ohno-Wang model are applied. By comparison with the experimental data, it is found that the CJK model gives reasonable simulation. Ratcheting boundaries under two control modes are almost same.
