  • This paper investigates the effect of micromechanical models on the bending behavior of bidirectional functionally graded (BDFG) beams subjected to different mechanical loading. The material properties of the beam are considered to be graded in both axial and thickness directions according to a power law. The beam's behavior is modeled by the mean of quasi 3D displacement field that contain undetermined integral terms and involves a reduced unknown functions. Navier's method is employed to determine and compute the displacements and stress for a simply supported beam. Different homogenization schemes such as Voigt, Reus, and Mori-Tanaka are employed to analyze the response of the BDFG beam subjected to linear, uniform, exponential and sinusoidal distributed loading. The results obtained by the present method are compared with available results in the literature and a good agreement was found. Several numerical results are presented in tabular form and in figures to examine the effects of the material gradation, micromechanical models and types of loading on the bending response of BDFG beams. It can be concluded that the present theory is not only accurate but also simple in predicting the bending response of BDFG beam subjected to different static loads.

  • This paper investigates the flexural analysis of isotropic, transversely isotropic, and laminated composite plates using a new higher-order normal and shear deformation theory. In the present theory, only five unknown functions are involved compared to six or more unknowns used in the other similar theories. The developed theory does not need a shear correction factor. It can satisfy the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and the bottom surfaces of the plate as well as account for sufficient distribution of the transverse shear strains. The thickness stretching effect is considered in the computation. A simply supported was considered on all edges of the plate. The plate is subjected to uniform and sinusoidal distributed load in the static analysis. Laminated composite, isotropic, and transversely isotropic plates are considered. The governing equations are obtained utilizing the virtual work principle. The differential equations are solved via Navier's procedure. The results obtained from the developed theory are compared with other higher-order theories considered in the previous studies and 3D elasticity solutions. The results showed that the proposed theory accurately and effectively predicts the bidirectional bending responses of laminated composite plates. Several parametric studies are presented to illustrate the various parameters influencing the static response of the laminated composite plates.

  • Inspired by the energy harvesting eel, a flexible flag behind a D-shape cylinder in a uniform viscous flow was simulated by using the immersed boundary method (IBM) along with low-speed wind tunnel experimentation. The flag in the wake of the cylinder was strongly influenced by the vortices shed from the upstream cylinder under the vortex-vortex and vortex-body interactions. Geometric and flow parameters were optimized for the flexible flag subjected to passive flapping. The influence of length and bending coefficient of the flexible flag, the diameters (D) of the cylinder and the streamwise spacing between the cylinder and the flag, on the energy generation was examined. Constructive and destructive vortex interaction modes, unidirectional and bidirectional bending and the different flapping frequency were found which explained the variations in the energy of the downstream flag. Voltage output and flapping behavior of the flag were also observed experimentally to find a more direct relationship between the bending of the flag and its power generation.

  • Thin plates are the most common spatially stressed members in engineering structures that bear out-of-plane loads. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the deformation performance characteristics of thin plates for structural design. By constructing 12 basic displacement and deformation basis vectors of the four-node square thin plate element, a deformation decomposition method based on the complete orthogonal mechanical basis matrix is proposed in this paper. Based on the deformation decomposition method, the deformation properties of the thin plate can be quantitatively analyzed, and the areas dominated by each basic deformation can be visualized. In addition, the method can not only obtain more deformation information of the structure, but also identify macroscopic basic deformations, such as bending, shear and warping deformations. Finally, the deformation properties of the bidirectional thin plates with different sizes of central holes are analyzed, and the changing rules are obtained.

  • The applicability of a novel incremental-iterative technique with 2D differential/integral quadrature method (DIQM) in analyzing the nonlinear behavior of Bi-directional functionally graded (BDFG) porous plate based on neutral surface is verified in the present works. A formulation of four variables high shear deformation theory is used to describe the kinematic relations with respect to neutral surface rather than mid-plane. Bi-directional material distributions are presented by power functions through both thickness and axial directions. Porosities and voids are distributed by different cosine functions. The large deformations are included within the sense of nonlinear von Kármán strains. The integro-differential equilibrium equations with associated modified boundary conditions are solved numerically and iteratively by using 2D DIQM. Model validations and parametric analysis are depicted to present the influence of neutral axis, nonlinear strains, gradation indices, elastic foundations, and modified boundary conditions on the static deflection in addition to normal and shear stresses. The proposed model is effective in analyzing the static behavior of many real applications in nuclear reactors, marine and aerospace structures with large deformations.
