  • This paper aims to correlate the micro-mechanical behaviour of tow geometry with applied in-plane forces during deformation of dry woven carbon-fibre fabric. These in-plane forces lead to differences in tow reorganisation during deformation and so changes in the way in which 'lock-up' occurs. In this paper, deformation of micro-mechanical parameters such as tow interval, crimp angle, change in tow amplitude and wavelength are investigated. To observe the micro-deformation of the fabric structure, appropriate specimens from bias extension and biaxial tests are sectioned and observed under the microscope. It was found that different loading conditions cause geometric deferences in the tow architecture. The variation in deformed tow geometry with shear angle is fitted using a simple parametric model.

  • Titanium alloy sheets have excellent specific strength and corrosion resistance as well as good performance at high temperature. Recently, titanium alloys are widely employed not only aerospace parts but also bio prothesis and motorcycle. However, due to the low formability and large spring back at room temperature, titanium alloy sheets were usually formed by slow forming or hot forming with heating die and specimen. In the sheet metal forming area, FE simulation technique to optimize forming process is widely used. To achieve high accuracy FE simulation results, Identification of material properties and deformation characteristic such as yield function are very important. In this study, uniaxial tensile and biaxial tensile test of Ti-6Al-4V alloy sheet with thickness of 1.0mm were performed at elevated temperature of 873k. Biaxial tensile tests with cruciform specimen were performed until the specimen was breakdown to characterize the yield locus of Ti-6Al-4V alloy sheet. The experimental results for yield locus are compared with the theoretical predictions based on Von Mises, Hill, Logan-Hosford, and Balat's model. Among these Logan-Hosford's yield criterion well predicts the experimental results.

  • Recently the use of ferritic stainless steels for automotive exhaust system has been increased dramatically. A detailed knowledge of material behavior of ferritic stainless steel is important for successful manufacturing of exhaust systems. To achieve this goal, numerical study of square cup deep drawing for ferritic stainless steel sheet, type 409L was conducted with Yld2000-24. Uniaxial tensile test and hydraulic bulge test were performed to characterize plastic material behavior. Finite element simulation of square cup deep drawing was performed successfully.

  • This paper presents the shear capacities of biaxial hollow slab with donut type hollow sphere. Recently, various types of slab systems which can reduce self-weight of slabs have been studied for increasing constructions of taller and larger building structures. A biaxial hollow slab system is widely known as one of the effective slab system, which can reduce self-weight of slab. According to previous studies, the hollow slab has low shear strength, compared to solid slab. Also, the shear capacities of biaxial hollow slab are influenced by the shapes and materials of hollow spheres. However, the current code does not provide a clear computation method for the shear strength of hollow slab. To verify the shear capacities of this hollow slab, one-way shear tests were performed. Four test specimens were used for test parameters. One was conventional RC slab and others were hollow slabs. The test parameters included two different shapes and materials of plastic balls. The shape parameters were donut and non-donut forms and the material parameters were general plastic and glass fiber plastic. The results showed that the shear strengths varied depending on hollow shapes and materials used in the slab.

  • Purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate biaxial flexural strength and hardness of colored monolithic zirconia after dipping in different time intervals of coloring solution. Materials and Methods. Disk shaped specimens were prepared from monolithic zirconia (Eclipse V2.0, AMS, Gimpo, Korea). Four experimental groups were categorized (n = 12) due to coloring time (PU (0s); ST (8s); OV (1 min); PS (preshade)), to evaluate biaxial flexural strength and Vickers hardness. After fracture, X-ray diffraction analysis was performed using fractured specimens. Results were analyzed with one-way ANOVA test. Results. There was no significant difference between groups in the biaxial flexural strength test. However, in the Vickers hardness test, the group with standard dipping time (ST) showed significantly higher value than the group without dipping in coloring liquid (PU)(P=.038). Also, there was no significant difference in the rest of the groups (P>.05). As a result of X-ray diffraction analysis, specific peaks of tetragonal phase were shown and the volume of monoclinic phase fraction was lower than 25%. Conclusion. Although this study has several limitations, coloring liquids had no significant effect on biaxial flexural strength. Vickers hardness was significantly different between the group to which the coloring liquid was applied and the group to which the coloring solution was not applied, but there was no significant difference between the other groups. Also, the flexural strength of monolithic zirconia corresponds to Class 5 of the minimal flexural strength standard according to the use of dental ceramics.

  • The applications of the aluminum alloy sheets to the auto-body panels are dramatically increasing for weight reduction of the automobiles. However, low formability of the aluminum alloy sheet compared to the steel sheet can be obstacles in tool manufacturing processes. Therefore, many of yield criteria for the anisotropic materials such as the aluminum alloy sheet have been observed. In this study, the biaxial tensile test and FLD test for the aluminum alloy sheet are performed. The results are compared with Hill's 1948 and Hill's 1990 models by means of theoretical predictions. Finite element analysis was also performed using the proposed method for the real panel.

  • The majority of studies comparing the mechanical properties of brittle dental restorative materials now include use of the Weibull Modulus (m). This modulus is determined from analysis of the statistical distribution of strength measurements, which can be determined using a variety of methods, including biaxial flexure, 3pt bend and 4pt bend. In comparing materials it is usually implicitly assumed that the modulus (m) is independent of test method although it is recognised to be highly dependent on flaw distributions. However, in some cases flaw distributions can be modified by sample preparation and test method may modify stressing patterns. This study investigated the pattern of strength and m in two light setting materials.
