A Filter Design for Reducing Altitude Measurement Errors Arising during Aircraft Landing (항공기 착륙 시에 발생하는 고도측정 오차 개선을 위한 필터설계)

  • Passive sensors such as Laser Range Finder(LRF) and Forward Looking Infrared(FLIR) camera frequently used for tracking aircraft landing produce the measurements of elevation angle contaminated by large noise due to the exhaust plume disturbance. This results in poor tracking performance if the extended Kalman filter is used for estimation of the range and elevation which are corrupted by the non-Gaussian noise such as plume disturbance. In this paper, an adaptive estimation filter and the extended Kalman filter is combined to produce a combination-type filter. In this approach the adaptive filter is used for the plume-type disturbance noise and the extended Kalman filter is utilized for the measurement of Gaussian type. The proposed combination filter is effective for the trajectory estimation of landing aircraft under the influence of unknown bias and numerical simulations illustrate the performance of the proposed filter.

Analysis of Geometric and Spatial Image Quality of KOMPSAT-3A Imagery in Comparison with KOMPSAT-3 Imagery

  • This study investigates the geometric and spatial image quality analysis of KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair. KOMPSAT-3A is, the latest satellite of KOMPSAT family, a Korean earth observation satellite operating in optical bands. A KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair was taken on 23 November, 2015 with 0.55 m ground sampling distance over Terrassa area of Spain. The convergence angle of KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair was estimated as $58.68^{\circ}$. The investigation was assessed through the evaluation of the geopositioning analysis, image quality estimation and the accuracy of automatic Digital Surface Model (DSM) generation and compared with those of KOMPSAT-3 stereo pair with the convergence angle of $44.80^{\circ}$ over the same area. First, geopositioning accuracy was tested with initial rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) and after compensating the biases of the initial RPCs by manually collected ground control points. Then, regarding image quality, relative edge response was estimated for manually selected points visible from two stereo pairs. Both of the initial and bias-compensated positioning accuracy and the quality assessment result expressed that KOMPSAT-3A images showed higher performance than those of KOMPSAT-3 images. Finally, the accuracy of DSMs generated from KOMPSAT-3A and KOMPSAT-3 stereo pairs were examined with respect to the reference LiDAR-derived DSM. The various DSMs were generated over the whole coverage of individual stereo pairs with different grid spacing and over three types of terrain; flat, mountainous and urban area. Root mean square errors of DSM from KOMPSAT-3A pair were larger than those for KOMPSAT-3. This seems due to larger convergence angle of the KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair.

An analysis of air apollution and daily mortality (대기중 총분진과 사망자수에 관한 분석)

  • Relationship between the daily mortality and total suspended particulate(TSP) for the period of 1996-1997 was examined in Seoul, Korea. Generalized additive model was adapted for the analysis to allow the seasonality and long-term time effect in the air pollution and the nonlinear relationships with weather variables such as air temperature and relative humidity. An increase of 100 Ji9/m') TSP corresponds to 0.8-5.2 percent increase of the daily mortality Unidirectional (prospective and retrospective) case-crossover design results in large bias of the estimates. Bidirectional method gives relatively unbiased estimates but the standard errors are larger Case-crossover design should be used with caution in the situation where the data have seasonal trends like air pollution study.

  • This study examined the relationship between psychopathology(depression, anxiety, aggression), maladaptive cognitions(negative cognitive errors, attributional biases), and age of children with ADHD. 40 ADHD children and their mother completed questionnaires assessing depression, anxiety, aggression level and maladaptive cognitions of children. The results showed that maladaptive cognitions of children with ADHD was not significantly associated with their depression, anxiety, aggression level. Age was negatively related to internal stable attributions for negative events that was characteristic in depression, and had significantly effect on internal stable attributions for negative events. As age of ADHD children increased, their internal attribution for negative events reduced. It seems that their depression and anxiety level is associated with current stress event rather than maladaptive cognitions. Suggestions and limitations of this study, and the directions for future study were discussed.

Growth Modelling of Listeria monocytogenes in Korean Pork Bulgogi Stored at Isothermal Conditions

  • The purpose of this study was to develop predictive models for the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in pork Bulgogi at various storage temperatures. A two-strain mixture of L. monocytogenes (ATCC 15313 and isolated from pork Bulgogi) was inoculated on pork Bulgogi at 3 Log CFU/g. L. monocytogenes strains were enumerated using general plating method on Listeria selective medium. The inoculated samples were stored at 5, 15, and $25^{\circ}C$ for primary models. Primary models were developed using the Baranyi model equations, and the maximum specific growth rate was shown to be dependent on storage temperature. A secondary model of growth rate as a function of storage temperature was also developed. As the storage temperature increased, the lag time (LT) values decreased dramatically and the specific growth rate of L. monocytogenes increased. The mathematically predicted growth parameters were evaluated based on the modified bias factor ($B_f$), accuracy factor ($A_f$), root mean square error (RMSE), coefficient of determination ($R^2$), and relative errors (RE). These values indicated that the developed models were reliably able to predict the growth of L. monocytogenes in pork Bulgogi. Hence, the predictive models may be used to assess microbiological hygiene in the meat supply chain as a function of storage temperature.

The systematic sampling for inferring the survey indices of Korean groundfish stocks

  • The Korean bottom trawl survey has been deployed on a regular basis for about the last decade as part of groundfish stock assessments. The regularity indicates that they sample groundfish once per grid cell whose sides are half of one latitude and that of one longitude, respectively, and whose inside is furthermore divided into nine nested grids. Unless they have a special reason (e.g., running into a rocky bottom), their sample location is at the center grid of the nine nested grids. Given data collected by the survey, we intended to show how to appropriately estimate not only the survey index of a fish stock but also its uncertainty. For the regularity reason, we applied the systematic sampling theory for the above purposes and compared its results with a reference, which was based on the simple random sampling. When using the survey data about 11 fish stocks, collected by the spring and fall surveys in 2014, the survey indices of those stocks estimated under the systematic sampling were overall more precise than those under the simple random sampling. In estimates of the survey indices in number, the standard errors of those estimates under the systematic sampling were reduced from those under the simple random sampling by 0.23~27.44%, while in estimates of the survey indices in weight, they decreased by 0.04~31.97%. In bias of the estimates, the systematic sampling was the same as the simple random sampling. Our paper is first in formally showing how to apply the systematic sampling theory to the actual data collected by the Korean bottom trawl surveys.

  • Weighting is a common form of unit nonresponse adjustment in sample surveys where entire questionnaires are missing due to noncontact or refusal to participate. A common approach computes the response weight as the inverse of the response rate within adjustment cells based on covariate information. In this paper, we consider the efficiency and robustness of nonresponse weight adjustment bated on the response propensity and predictive mean. In the simulation study based on 2000 Fishry Census in Korea, the root mean squared errors for assessing the various ways of forming nonresponse adjustment cell s are investigated. The simulation result suggest that the most important feature of variables for inclusion in weighting adjustment is that they are predictive of survey outcomes. Though useful, prediction of the propensity to response is a secondary. Also the result suggest that adjustment cells based on joint classification by the response propensity and predictor of the outcomes is productive.

Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (S2S) Prediction Skills of GloSea5 Model: Part 1. Geopotential Height in the Northern Hemisphere Extratropics (GloSea5 모형의 계절내-계절(S2S) 예측성 검정: Part 1. 북반구 중위도 지위고도)

  • This study explores the Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (S2S) prediction skills of the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitude geopotential height in the Global Seasonal forecasting model version 5 (GloSea5) hindcast experiment. The prediction skills are quantitatively verified for the period of 1991~2010 by computing the Anomaly Correlation Coefficient (ACC) and Mean Square Skill Score (MSSS). GloSea5 model shows a higher prediction skill in winter than in summer at most levels regardless of verification methods. Quantitatively, the prediction limit diagnosed with ACC skill of 500 hPa geopotential height, averaged over $30^{\circ}N{\sim}90^{\circ}N$, is 11.0 days in winter, but only 9.1 days in summer. These prediction limits are primarily set by the planetary-scale eddy phase errors. The stratospheric prediction skills are typically higher than the tropospheric skills except in the summer upper-stratosphere where prediction skills are substantially lower than upper-troposphere. The lack of the summer upper-stratospheric prediction skill is caused by zonal mean error, perhaps strongly related to model mean bias in the stratosphere.

A Case Study of Data Editing for the Korean Housing Price Survey (주택가격동향조사를 위한 데이터편집 사례연구)

  • Large scale survey database may contain some erroneous data or missing data. Incomplete or erroneous data may be produced in the process of data collection or data capture. Since erroneous data can cause some bias and inconsistency, data editing, which is the procedure for detecting and adjusting individual errors in data records, is a very important work in statistical survey. In this paper, we introduce an editing process for the housing price survey to enhance discussions on that topic. We explain how to decide some appropriate edit rules and show some related data. Furthermore, we describe input editing procedures which is appropriate for on-line survey and how to find and eliminate erroneous data through output editing.

  • Finite failure NHPP models presented in the literature exhibit either constant, monotonic increasing or monotonic decreasing failure occurrence rates per fault. In this paper, Goel-Okumoto and Yamada-Ohba-Osaki model was reviewed, proposes the $x^2$ reliability model, which can capture the increasing nature of the failure occurrence rate per fault. Algorithm to estimate the parameters used to maximum likelihood estimator and bisection method, model selection based on SSE, AIC statistics and Kolmogorov distance, for the sake of efficient model, was employed. Analysis of failure using real data set, SYS2(Allen P.Nikora and Michael R.Lyu), for the sake of proposing shape parameter of the $x^2$ distribution using the degree of freedom, was employed. This analysis of failure data compared with the $x^2$ model and the existing model using arithmetic and Laplace trend tests, Kolmogorov test is presented.
