  • This study compares true stress-true strain curves obtained by tensile tests of various piping materials with bi-linear stress-strain approximation suggested in the JSME Code Case(CC) Draft, a guideline for piping seismic inelastic response analysis. Based on the comparisons, the reliability of the bi-linear approximation is evaluated. It is found that bi-linear stress-strain curve of TP316 stainless steel is in good agreement with its true stress-true strain curve. However, Bi-linear stress-strain curves of TP304 stainless steel and carbon steels determined by the approximation cannot appropriately estimate their stress-strain behavior. Accordingly new bi-linear approximations for carbon steels and low-alloy steels are proposed. The proposed bi-linear approximations for carbon and low-alloy steels, which include the temperature effect on strength and hardening of material, estimate their stress-strain behavior reasonably well.

  • The residual fracture toughness of post-fire normal-strength concrete subjected up to $600^{\circ}C$ is considered by the wedge splitting test. The initial fracture toughness $K_I^{ini}$ and the critical fracture toughness $K_I^{un}$ could be calculated experimentally. Their difference is donated as the cohesive fracture toughness $K_I^c$ which is caused by the distribution of cohesive stress on the fracture process zone. A comparative study on determining the residual fracture toughness associated with three bi-linear functions of the cohesive stress distribution, i.e. Peterson's softening curve, CEB-FIP Model 1990 softening curve and Xu's softening curve, using an analytical method is presented. It shows that different softening curves have no significant influence on the fracture toughness. Meanwhile, comparisons between the experimental and the analytical calculated critical fracture toughness values further prove the validation of the double-K fracture model to the post-fire concrete specimens.

  • This paper presents methodologies for remaining life prediction of plain concrete structural components considering tension softening effect. Non-linear fracture mechanics principles (NLFM) have been used for crack growth analysis and remaining life prediction. Various tension softening models such as linear, bi-linear, tri-linear, exponential and power curve have been presented with appropriate expressions. A methodology to account for tension softening effects in the computation of SIF and remaining life prediction of concrete structural components has been presented. The tension softening effects has been represented by using any one of the models mentioned above. Numerical studies have been conducted on three point bending concrete structural component under constant amplitude loading. Remaining life has been predicted for different loading cases and for various tension softening models. The predicted values have been compared with the corresponding experimental observations. It is observed that the predicted life using bi-linear model and power curve model is in close agreement with the experimental values. Parametric studies on remaining life prediction have also been conducted by using modified bilinear model. A suitable value for constant of modified bilinear model is suggested based on parametric studies.

  • This study presents the assessment of pseudostatic approach for obtaining the internal response of Single Column/Shaft subjected to earthquake loading. In numerical procedure, various lateral load transfer characteristics (p-y curve and Bi-linear curve) were used to model the nonlinear behavior of soil reactions including soil-pile interaction. The analysis using nonlinear soil model could estimate the seismic performance of soil-pile system, despite its relative simplicity. It was found that lateral behavior of single column/shaft obtained from the response displacement method was larger than those by seismic intensity method. To investigate the effects of soil-pile rigidity and pile head condition on the internal pile response, parametric studies were carried out for various soil models. The results from numerical analysis showed that lateral deflection was decreased with fixed condition of pile head and decreasing the soil-pile rigidity. The seismic analysis using Bi-linear model of JRA could reasonably predict the lateral behavior of Single Column/Shaft.

  • In this paper, the optimal tuning of a cross-coupled controller linked with the feedforward controller is studied to reduce contouring and tracking errors of a bi-axial servomechanisms by using the previously developed integrated tuning method. The CCC system for an arbitrary curve, which is combined with the feedforward controller, is formulated by a state-space based on a series of linear motion trajectories. An optimal tuning problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem including relevant controller parameters of the servo. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed optimal tuning procedure, linear and circular motion experiments are performed on the xy-table. Experimental results confirm that both tracking and contouring errors are significantly reduced by applying the proposed control and tuning system.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new algebraic method to characterize rational PH plane curves. And using this method, we study the algebraic characterization of generic strongly regular rational plane PH curves expressed in the complex formalism which is introduced by R.T. Farouki. We prove that generic strongly semi-regular rational PH plane curves are completely characterized by solving a simple functional equation H(f, g) = $h^2$ where h is a complex polynomial and H is a bi-linear operator defined by H(f, g) = f'g - fg' for complex polynomials f,g.

  • The multiferroic $BiFeO_3$ has been investigated extensively in both thin film and ceramic form. However, the synthesis of a perfect sample with high resistivity is a prerequisite for examining its properties. This paper reports the synthesis of multiferroic $BiFeO_3$ along with its structural, electrical and magnetic properties in ceramic form. Polycrystalline ceramic samples of $BiFeO_3$ were synthesized by solid-state reaction using high purity oxides and carbonates. The formation of a single-phase compound was confirmed by x-ray diffraction and its lattice parameters were determined using a standard computer program. The microstructural studies and density measurement confirmed that the prepared samples were sufficiently dense for an examination of its electrical and magnetic properties. The dc electrical conductivity studies show that the sample was resistive with an activation energy of ${\sim}0.81\;eV$. The magnetization measurement showed a linear ($M{\sim}H$) curve indicating antiferromagnetic characteristics.

  • In this paper, a hysteretic model of rectangular hollow section (RHS) columns that includes the deteriorating range caused by local buckling is proposed. The proposed model consists of the skeleton curve, the Bauschinger part that appears before reaching the maximum strength, the strength increasing part of the deteriorating range, and the unloading part. Of these, the skeleton curve, including the deterioration range caused by local buckling, which is considered to be equivalent to the load-deformation relationship under monotonic loading, is obtained through an analytical method. Bi-linear hysteretic models based on experimental results are applied to the Bauschinger part and the strength increasing part. The elastic stiffness is applied to the unloading part. The proposed model is verified by comparing with experimental results of RHS columns under monotonic and cyclic loading.

  • Unlike homogeneous material structure, the behavior of masonry structure is not perfectly elastic even in the range of small deformations because it is a non-homogeneous and anisotropic composite structural material, consisting of masonry units, mortar, and grout. This paper proposes a simplified way of investigating the evolution of the deformation and damage of the structure subjected to a series of successive ground motions with varying shaking. Especially, the most simple but useful algorithm of Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) has been adopted to investigate the evolution of the deformation and damage of the structure tested on the shaking table. Moreover, the development of a hi-linear curve for an equivalent SDOF system which is obtained by exploiting the frequency and stiffness relationship was discussed. Finally, some important findings related to inelastic properties of the URM are summarized.

  • In this paper, based on the finite element analysis model verified in previous studies, a new model of a buckling restrained brace reinforced with a steel plate was proposed. A design formula was proposed for the new model to dissipate energy without buckling the steel core under load protocol, and the performance of the model satisfying the design formula was evaluated by comparing it with the previous model through the results of hysteresis loop, bi-linear curve, cumulative energy dissipation capacity, and equivalent viscous damping.
