  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors influencing depression among mothers-in-law in multicultural families. Methods: For this study, 159 participants from multicultural families were recruited through administrative units of the B. & U. Metropolitan City and G. Province. Data related to acculturation stress, resilience, and depression were collected from April to August 2014 and analyzed through t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 22.0 for Windows program. Results: The participants had a moderate level of acculturation stress ($2.43{\pm}0.75$: range 1~5) and resilience ($4.74{\pm}1.14$: range 1~7). About 58% of the participants had depression. The results of stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that mothers-in-law's depression was affected by resilience (${\beta}=-1.17$, p<.001), acculturation stress (${\beta}=0.85$, p=.026), perceived economic level (${\beta}=-0.83$, p=.016), difficulty in physical activity (${\beta}=-0.62$, p=.027), relationship satisfaction (${\beta}=-0.51$, p=.035), and education level (${\beta}=-0.48$, p=.033). The explanatory power of these factors was 35%. Conclusion: The findings indicated the need to lower the level of depression by enhancing resilience and reducing acculturation stress among mothers-in-law in multicultural families. Future research to reduce depression among mothers-in-law in multicultural families should consider how to enhance resilience and reduce acculturation stress.

  • Background: ${\beta}$-catenin plays a crucial role in the progression of breast cancer (BC) and a prognostic role of in BC patients has been widely reported. However, controversy still remains. Materials and Methods: Identical search strategies were used to search relevant literature in electronic databases updated to July 1, 2014. Individual hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted and pooled HRs with 95%CIs were used to evaluate the strength of association between positive ${\beta}$-catenin expression in different subcellular locations and survival results of BC patients. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed to explore heterogeneity. Funnel plots of Begg's and Egger's linear regression test were used to investigate publication bias. Heterogeneity and sensitivity were also assessed. All the work was completed using STATA. Results: A total of 2,204 patients from 12 evaluative studies were finally included. Pooled HRs and 95%CIs suggested that ${\beta}$-catenin expression in cytoplasm/nucleus had an unfavorable impact on both overall survival (OS) (HR: 1.93, 95%CI: 1.40-2.65) and disease free survival (DFS)/ recurrent free survival (RFS) (HR: 1.60, 95%CI: 1.20-2.13) in BC patients. However, here was no significant association between ${\beta}$-catenin expression in the membranes with OS (HR: 0.65, 95%CI: 0.42-1.02) or DFS/RFS (HR: 0.66, 95%CI: 0.38-1.13). Publication bias was absent in all of the four outcomes. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the results of this meta-analysis were robust. Conclusions: Positive ${\beta}$-catenin expression in cytoplasm/nucleus rather than in membrane is a significant prognostic factor in patients with BC who have been surgically treated.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop and test a structural model for sleep quality in female shift work nurses. The hypothetical model was constructed on the basis of Spielman's 3P model of insomnia and previous research related to the sleep quality of shift nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional study used structural equation modeling and recruited 285 female shift work nurses from four general and university hospitals with over 300 beds located in C and J cities in Gyeongsangnamdo. Data were collected from September 27 to October 20, 2016, and then analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and structural equation modeling. The study used SPSS/Win 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 in processing the data. Results: The final model showed good fit to the empirical data: ${\chi}^2/df=2.19$, SRMR=.07, RMSEA=.07, AGFI=.85, TLI=.91, GFI=.93, GFI=.89, NFI=.87. The factors that influenced sleep quality were sleep hygiene (${\beta}=.32$), perceived shift work status (${\beta}=-.16$), stress response (${\beta}=.16$), shift work experience (${\beta}=.15$), perceived health status (${\beta}=-.14)$, and circadian rhythm (${\beta}=-.13$) explaining 36.0% of the variance. Conclusion: The model of sleep quality of the shift work nurses constructed in this study is recommended as a model to understand and predict the sleep quality of shift work nurses. The results suggest that strategies for improving the sleep quality of shift work nurses should focus on sleep hygiene, perceived health status, stress response, circadian rhythm, perceived shift work status, and shift work experience.

  • Catechin (CTEC) is well-known as a very powerful antioxidant, containing the effects of anti-inflammation and skin wound healing. In this study, CTEC/${\beta}$-cyclodextrin (${\beta}$-CD) nanoparticles were incorporated into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/pectin (PT) hydrogel. The composite was designed for the induction of re-epithelializaton in skin wound. CTEC/${\beta}$-CD nanoparticles were prepared by a molecular complex method. The size of the CTEC nanoparticles formed in the hydrogel was in the range of $250{\pm}17.5$ nm. The incorporation efficiency of CTEC in the nanoparticles was 74%. The cumulative amounts of CTEC released from the hydrogel containing CTEC nanoparticles in the buffers of pH7.4 and 5.5 were $86.51{\pm}3.14%$ and $35.95{\pm}2.14%$ of total CTEC loaded in the hydrogel within 72 h, respectively. Also, in the wound healing test, the CTEC nanoparticles-loaded PVA/PT hydrogel showed faster healing of the wound made in rat dorsum than the CTEC gel.

  • The hot deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo(Ti6246) alloy was investigated in both the $\alpha$+$\beta$ and $\beta$-phase fields by conducting compression tests over a strain rate range of $10^{-3}s^{-1}$ to $10^0s^{-1}$. The flow stress was increased with increasing strain rate and decreasing test temperature. The flow curves obtained at temperatures below 90$0^{\circ}C$ exhibited a flow softening. However, in the $\beta$-phase field, above 95$0^{\circ}C$, the flow stress increased monotonically with plastic strain approaching steady state values. Constitutive equations for the dependence of flow stress on strain, strain rate, and temperature were developed through the analysis of the flow curves.

  • Purpose: This study provides information for the development of educational programs for improving awareness of support to the elderly among adolescents. Methods: The 350 students of high schools located in Seoul were selected as subjects and surveyed using structured questionnaires during 11th~15th of April in 2014. The 327 subjects were used for analysis and the response rate was 93.4%. SPSS/WIN18.0 program was performed for t-test, ANOVA and regression analysis. Results: First, adolescents with parents aged over 50 compared to those with parents younger than 40 showed high level of awareness of support to the elderly. The high level of cognitive factors including image and perception towards the elderly (t=3.07, p=.01) were significant factors of awareness of support to the elderly. In experiential factors, adolescents with extensive influence of media and experiences with cohabitation with grandparents, and experiences with voluntary service activities were statistically significant with the high level of awareness of support to the elderly. Second, in regression analysis, adolescents' economic support awareness was higher with the stronger influence in the elderly-related media (${\beta}=.221$, p=.032). The emotional support awareness was higher among the eldest sons (${\beta}=.220$, p=.017) and perception (${\beta}=.352$, p=.001) to elderly (${\beta}=.221$, p=.032). Physical support awareness was higher when the positive image for the elderly (${\beta}=.223$, p=.016) and the high perception towards the elderly (${\beta}=.293$, p=.007). Conclusion: The awareness of support to the elderly should be constantly strengthened to the adolescents. Despite the rapid increase of the elderly, studies are not sufficient. Further research will be necessary.

  • As a result of analyzing the effects of removing dental plaque according to using proxabrush by using the proportional odds models, targeting patients of practicing oral prophylaxis in juniors for the Department of Dental Hygiene at S university from March 10, 2007 to June 3, 2007, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. The goodness-of-fit in the proportional odds models is 1.2552 whose degree of freedom is 3, and p value is .7398, thereby implying that the proportional odds models are appropriate. And, regarding the effects of removing dental plaque and the independent matter of using proxabrush, as the test on $H_0:{\beta}=0$, the test statistics is 15.5496 whose degree of freedom is 1, and p value is 15.5496. This implies that there is high correlation between the effect of removing dental plaque and the use of proxabrush. 2. ML estimate on $\beta$ in the model can be $\hat{\beta}=1.2493$ (ASE = 0.3207). And, as for the tendency that the response will belong to being very good(this can be expressed to be $Y{\leq}j$) rather than being very bad, the tendency of using proxabrush is higher by the estimated odds ratio exp(1.2493) = 3.49 times than the response of not using proxabrush. 3. As for the estimated response in the proportional odds models, the estimated(cumulative) probability, which the response of using proxabrush is very good and will belong to the good effect of removing dental plaque, is 0.38(0.50).

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationship among clinical nurses' emotional labor, health promoting behaviors and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), as well as to clarify factors that affect nurses' PMS. This was a descriptive study of 195 clinical nurses working in one university hospital and two general hospitals in the C region. Data collection was conducted from Jul 3 until Jul 21, 2017. T-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression were used for analysis. The mean score of emotional labor was $3.35{\pm}0.63$ out of 5, that of health promoting behavior was $2.08{\pm}0.40$ out of 4 and that of PMS was $2.94{\pm}1.09$ out of 6. Premenstrual syndrome was significantly positively correlated with emotional labor (r=0.292, p<0.001) and interpersonal relationships in health promotion behavior (r=0.208, p=0.004). Factors influencing PMS were interpersonal relationships (${\beta}=0.54$, p=0.001), emotional labor (${\beta}=0.40$, p=0.001) and degree of menstrual pain (${\beta}=0.14$, p<0.001), which explained 30.0% of PMS (F=9.33, p <0.001). The results of this study suggest that intervention strategies may be necessary to decrease PMS by reducing menstrual pain, emotional labor and interpersonal relationship stress.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of clinical nurses' intrinsic motivation, affective commitment, and turnover intention on organizational performance. Participants were 189 nurses currently working at four general hospitals in C city. Data were collected by a self-report questionnaire and analyzed by using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program with descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. Mean scores were as follows: intrinsic motivation($3.02{\pm}0.57$), affective commitment ($3.47{\pm}0.71$), turnover intention ($3.30{\pm}0.59$), and organizational performance ($3.37{\pm}0.52$). Organizational performance was significantly correlated with intrinsic motivation, affective commitment, and turnover intention. Nurses with higher affective commitment and intrinsic motivation showed higher organizational performance, where as higher turnover intention was correlated with lower organizational performance. The factors that influenced organizational performance were affective commitment(${\beta}=.42$), intrinsic motivation(${\beta}=.36$), and turnover intention(${\beta}=-.11$), with an explanatory power of 51.6%. Results of this study indicate the need to evaluate and manage the significant predictors of organizational performance. Further studies are needed to identify the relationships between clinical nurses' intrinsic motivation, affective commitment, turnover intention, and organizational performance.
