  • This study was performed to investigate the type of extended-spectrum $\beta$-lactamases (ESBL) produced by bacteria isolated from the sewage of wastewater treatment plant at Minragdong, Suyong-gu in Busan. The facility is located at sushi restaurants and guides its drain water to the wastewater treatment plant at Yonghodong, Nam-gu in Busan. Samples were collected on January, 2009. A total of 19 strains were selected as potential ESBL positive strains through a double disk synergy test. On the basis of the results from biochemical tests including indole, methyl-red, Voges-Proskauer, Simmon's citrate, decarboxylase-dihydrolase and sugar-fermentation tests, the 19 strains were identified with 16 strains of Escherichia coli and 3 strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Out of 19 strains, 4 transconjugants against Escherichia coli J53, which is sodium azide resistant recipient strain, were obtained. The plasmids isolated from transconjugants were used for PCR analysis. The type of each extended-spectrum $\beta$-lactamase (ESBL) produced by the strains was determined on the basis of isoelectric focusing analysis and DNA sequencing. The results indicated that the types of ESBL from Klebsiella pneumoniae were SHV-12 (3 strains), and Escherichia coli was SHV-12/TEM-1 (1 strain), respectively.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to understand what various factors influence school life adaption of nursing students by measuring life stress, anger and optimism. Methods: The subjects were 186 students in B city and the data were collected for the period of 17-28 April 2017. The collected data were analyzed with an independent t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's method, Cronbach's alpha and Pearson's correlation coefficients. The results are as follows respectively: life stress 1.34/4, state anger 1.24/4, trait anger 1.57/4 at average, and among optimism was 3.45/5 at average. Multiple regression analysis showed perceived physical health status(${\beta}=.20$ t=2.72, p=.007), satisfaction on college(${\beta}=.19$, t=2.53 p=.012) and life stress (${\beta}=-.14$ t=-2.28, p=.027) were related to factors. They accounted 18.2% of the optimism of the subjects. However, there was no significant correlation between optimism and anger of nursing students. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a program to improve the optimism of nursing college students and to develop a program that can enhance the coping ability of stress to cope with life stress experienced by nursing students.

  • Previous evidence showed ${\beta}1$, 3-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase 8 (${\beta}3GnT8$), which can extend polylactosamine on N-glycans, to be highly expressed in some cancer cell lines and tissues, indicating roles in tumorigenesis. However, so far, the function of ${\beta}3GnT8$ in laryngeal carcinoma has not been characterized. To test any contribution, Hep-2 cells were stably transfected with sense or interference vectors to establish cell lines that overexpressed or were deficient in ${\beta}3GnT8$. Here we showed that cell proliferation was increased in ${\beta}3GnT8$ overexpressed cells but decreased in ${\beta}3GnT8$ knockdown cells using MTT. Furthermore, we demonstrated that change in ${\beta}3GnT8$ expression had significant effects on tumor growth in nude mice.We further provided data suggesting that overexpression of ${\beta}3GnT8$ enhanced the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) at both the mRNA and protein levels, associated with shedding of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase TIMP-2. In addition, it caused increased production of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-${\beta}1$), whereas ${\beta}3GnT8$ gene knockdown caused the reverse effect. The results may indicate a novel mechanism by which effects of ${\beta}3GnT8$ in regulating cellular proliferation are mediated, at least in partvia targeting MMPs/TIMPs and TGF-${\beta}1$ in laryngeal carcinoma Hep-2 cells. The finding may lay a foundation for further investigations into the ${\beta}3GnT8$ as a potential target for therapy of laryngeal carcinoma.

  • Red active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are supposed to be transitional objects becoming normal AGNs in the galaxy evolution scenario. So far, ~200 red AGNs have been found by very red color in optical through NIR wavelength (e.g., r'-K >5 and J-K>1.3; Urrutia et al. 2009). Here, we compare nuclear activities of the red AGNs to those of normal AGNs to verify the evolutionary phase of the red AGNs. In order to study the nuclear activities of the red AGNs, we use broad emission lines of $P{\beta}$ ($1.28{\mu}m$) of which flux is less suppressed by a factor of 100 than the $H{\beta}$ line in the case of the red AGNs with a color excess of E(B-V)=2 mag. We use 16 red AGNs discovered in previous red AGN surveys by using SDSS, 2MASS, and FIRST (Glikman et al. 2007; Urrutia et al. 2009) at z ~0.7 for which $P{\beta}$ lines are redshifted to the sky window at ${\sim}2.2{\mu}m$. The mean Eddington ratio of the 16 red AGNs is 0.562, and that of the normal AGNs is 0.320, which indicates the red AGNs include more active black hole (BH) than the normal AGNs. To test how significantly the nuclear activities of the red AGNs and the normal AGNs are different, we perform a two-dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (K-S test) on their Eddington ratio distributions. The K-S test shows the maximum deviation between the cumulative distributions, D, is 0.48, and the probability of null hypothesis, p, is even less than 0.001. This result is consistent with a picture of that the red AGNs are in intermediate phase between the stage of merger-driven starburst galaxy and the normal AGN.

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of hotel and restaurant employees' eating habits on their dining-out behavior. 309 workers from die hotel and restaurant companies participated in the survey, and SPSS 14.0 was used to perform frequency analyses, factor analyses, f-tests, ANOVA and multiple regression analyses. An exploratory factor analysis revealed three eating habits; unhealthy, healthy and ideal eating habits with 62.250% of the cumulative variance explained. The factor analysis included the priority on menu items, atmosphere and location of a restaurant with 60.658% of the total variance explained The results of the t-tests gave partial supports for the hypothesized gender difference in eating habits and for the hypothesis that eating habits would differ according to marital status. The result of ANOVA gave a partial support for die hypothesized age difference in eating habits. The result of the multiple regression analysis showed that all eating habits, unhealthy($\beta$=0.326, p<0.000), healthy($\beta$=0.290, p<0.000) and ideal($\beta$=0.305, p<0.000), had a significant effect on the priority on menu items. Eating habits explained 13.1% of die total variance in the importance of restaurant atmosphere and location. The influence of unhealthy eating habits was not statistically significant ($\beta$=0.002, p<0.965) while the influence of healthy($\beta$=0.309, p<0.000) and ideal eating habits($\beta$=0.189, p<0.000) was statistically significant Consequently, there was a partial support for the hypothesis that eating habits would influence die priority of restaurant atmosphere and location as a factor when dining out.

  • Objectives: In this research, the effect of samul-tanggahyangbuja on depression and learning in ovariectomized rats subjected to repetitive stress were assessed. Samul-tanggahyangbuja is the prescription consisting of Samul-tang and Cyperi Rhizoma. Methods: Ovariectomized rats were repeatedly stressed over a 2-week period. After being orally medicated with samul-tanggahyangbuja (100 or 400 mg/kg), rats performed the Morris water maze test and forced swimming test, and social exploration was assessed in a behavior test. As well, sucrose intake was measured and measurements of blood serum corticosterone and the change of interleukin-$1{\beta}$ (IL-$1{\beta}$) and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$) in blood samples were made. Results: 1. In the Morris water maze test, rats medicated with 100 mg samul-tanggahyangbuja mastered the maze in a shorter time on the 4th day in comparison with the control group, while rats medicated with 400 mg samul-tanggahyangbuja mastered the maze more quickly (p<0.05 on the 3rd day ; p<0.01 on the 4th day, as compared to control). 2. Immobility time in the forced swimming test was significantly decreased in rats receiving 400 mg samul-tanggahyangbuja compared with the control group (p<0.05). 3. Sucrose intake and active social behavior of rats receiving 400 mg samul-tanggahyangbuja were markedly increased in comparison with the control group (p<0.01). 4. Blood serum corticosterone measurements revealed decreased blood serum corticosterone level after medicating with samul-tanggahyangbuja. But it was not statistically significant. 5. Treatment with either dose of samul-tanggahyangbuja significantly reduced IL-$1{\beta}$ and TNF-${\alpha}$ (p<0.05). Conclusions: These results suggest that samul-tanggahyangbuja possesses the anti-depressant and cognitive-enhancing activities related to menopause.

  • In this study, we characterized extended-spectrum $\beta$-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolated from clinical specimens in Korea and found two strains harboring plasmid-mediated $bla_{SHV-11}$, Klebsiella pneumoniae. First, the isolates were detected using the Vitek system and confirmed by the double-disk synergy test. The classification of gene coding for ESBL was also performed by polymerase chain reactions and followed by DNA sequencing. The transmission of genes was confirmed by transconjugation and transformation. Resistant expression of transformants was determined by broth microdilution minimal inhibitory concentration test. Genotypic analysis revealed that one strain harbored the $bla_{TEM-1}$, $bla_{SHV-11}$ and $bla_{CTX-M-15}$ and the other strain harbored the $bla_{SHV-11}$ and $bla_{CTX-M-15}$. They showed high resistance to oxyiminocephalosphorins (3rd-generation cephalosporins), while the transformant containing only $bla_{SHV-11}$ did not show any resistance to the antibiotics.

  • This study assesses the association of nurses' hope, grateful disposition, and workplace spirituality with the goals of providing human resource management plans that lead to efficient and competitive nurse structure by building a nurse organizational culture based on analyzing the influences affecting organizational citizenship behavior. Participants were 147 nurses working in four general hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The survey data were analyzed by frequencies, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple stepwise regression via SPSS WIN 18.0. Results showed that organizational citizenship behavior is positively associated with nurse's hope (${\gamma}=.22{\sim}.36$, p<.001), grateful disposition (${\gamma}=.38$, p<.001) and workplace spirituality (${\gamma}=.38{\sim}.54$, p<.001). The significant predictors of organizational citizenship behavior were workplace spirituality (${\beta}=.54$, p<.001), hope of turnover (${\beta}=.12$, p<.001), hope (${\beta}=.09$, p<.001) and grateful disposition (${\beta}=.08$, p<.001), which explained 41.6% of the variance in organizational citizenship behavior. This study systematizes a theory for workplace spirituality processing the early stage research in nurse structure. To improve organizational citizenship behavior among nurses, educational programs and supporting systems should be developed to increase nurses' hope, disposition of grateful disposition, and workplace spirituality.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the extent of and relationships among emotional labor, job stress, burnout and turnover intention and the factors influencing the turnover intention of care workers at long-term care hospitals. The study was approved by KUIRS, and the data were collected from August 12 to September 30, 2015, and analyzed using the SPSS WIN 18.0 program. The participants of this study were 200 care workers at ten different long-term care hospitals in B city and G province. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics, the t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and Stepwise multiple regression. The turnover intention was significantly correlated with emotional labor (r=.372, p<.001), job stress (r=.471, p<.001), and burnout (r=.411, p<.001). In the multiple regression, job stress (${\beta}=.290$, p<.001), burnout (${\beta}=.239$, p<.001), type of employment (${\beta}=.185$, p<.001), and emotional labor (${\beta}=.157$, p=.017) were identified as factors influencing the turnover intention. These factors explained 32.6% of the total variance in the turnover intention. Based on the results, in order to reduce the turnover intention, the improvement of work environment and clear job-descriptions are needed to reduce the job stress, and the development and implementation of proactive psycho-social interventions are necessary to reduce burnout and emotional labor in care workers at long-term care hospitals.
