Porous ceramic supports with immobilized microorganisms for the water purifier were synthesized by firing green compacts of mixed powder comprising of fly ash, bentonite and an additive of yeast powder at 800∼1,000$^{\circ}C$ for 1h and the pore and mechanical properties of specimens were investigated. The compressive strength was increased in FB (Fly Ash + Bentonite) specimens while pore properties was decreased with increasing the bentonite content and sintering temperature. The compressive strength, bulk density, apparent density, porosity, mean pore size, pore volume and specific surface area of FB specimens at 800∼1,000$^{\circ}C$ were 89.6∼128.9 kgf/$cm^2$, 1.25∼1.43, 1.61∼1.78, 27.2∼62.2%, 7.9∼25.6 ${\mu}m$, 8.9∼$22.2{\times}10^{-5}\;cm^3/g$ and 35.2∼134.3 $m^2/g$, respectively. The pore properties of FBY (FB+yeast powder) specimens were superior to that of FB specimens, however compressive strength was decreased with increasing yeast powder content. The overall properties of 9F1B1Y (9F1B+10% of yeast powder) specimens at 900$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h were 98.7 kgf/$cm^2$, 1.20, 1.67, 68.1%, 48.9 ${\mu}m$, $29.5{\times}10^{-5}\;cm^3/g$ and 152.2 $m^2/g$, respectively. In this study, it was revealed that 9F1B1Y specimen demonstrated better S. saprophyticus adherence properties n their surface pores. Consequently, the microorganisms immobilized on porous ceramic supports showed better water purifying performance with many pores and adequate strength.
The dispersion/flocculation behavior of bentonite is a major concern in performance of drilling fluid. We studied the dispersion/flocculation characteristics of three commercial bentonites [two CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) treated and one untreated] in waters of different pHs and salt concentrations. We also examined changes in the viscosity of bentonite suspensions in such waters as a major rheological property of drilling fluid. The dispersion/flocculation behaviors of bentonites were measured by two methods: colorimetric and light scattering method. Light scattering method allows estimating the floc diameter and flocculation rate. The dispersion and flocculation behaviors were diverse with the different bentonites and water qualities. In distilled water, all the bentonites were well dispersed up to first 10 minutes. After that, the CMC-bearing bentonites were flocculated. In salt waters, all the samples were flocculated and the flocculation rate is varied with salt concentration and polymer content. The volume of settled flocs decreased with increasing salt concentration. The flocculation rate and floc diameter increased with decreasing pH of solutions, whereas the volume of settled flocs increased with increasing pH of solutions. The bentonites of fast flocculation behavior had low viscosity. The results of the present study will be helpful in applying bentonites to drilling fluids in diverse environments.
Four different composition of autoxidation drying type waterborne coatings (WBC-1, WBC-2, WBC-3, WBC-4) were prepared by the compounding of bentonite (BEN) as a water swellable clay and organometallic soaps as a drier with acrylic binder and coating additives. The solution viscosity, solid content, rheological properties and drying rate of WBCs were investigated. Also the thermal stability, the transmittance and the water-resistance of the films casted by WBCs were measured, and the surface topology of WBC films were investigated by the scanning probe microscopy. As WBC-2, WBC-3 and WBC-4 containing BEN showed the thixotropy with the shear rate, the storage stability of WBC was a excellent. When the driers was mixed in the ratio of Mn/Zn/Ba=1/2/3, the dry ability of WBCs showed maximum as 5.0 sec at 60$\^{C}$. The initial decomposition temperature and the transmittance of WBC films containing BEN increased in range of 32.2∼54.7$\^{C}$ and 5.1∼8.6% than the commercial WBC (MC-21W), respectively. The water resistance of WBC films increased in order of MC-21W
Clay-based membranes with submicron pore size were successfully prepared by a simple pressing process using low-cost starting materials(e.g., kaolin (K), bentonite (B), talc (T), and sodium borate). The green bodies were sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in air. The effect of clay-mineral composition on the flexural strength of clay-based membranes was investigated. The porosity of the clay-based membranes could be controlled within the range of 34 - 42% by adjusting the starting composition. The flexural strength of the low-cost membranes depended on both the porosity and the ${\alpha}$-quartz content. In turn, the porosity and ${\alpha}$-quartz content were affected by the (B+T) /(K+B+T) ratio. The plot of strength relative to this ratio, showed a maximum when the ratio was 0.4. The typical flexural strength of these clay-based membranes (with ratio 0.4) was 28 MPa at 34% porosity.
This study focused on high school laboratory research and the main purpose was to develop alternative additives for livestock waste and ammonia volatilization methods with high school students as participants and to provide information to business owners based on the results. Compared to the control groups, The bentonite and illite treatment groups had similar ammonia volatilization, pH, EC, and total nitrogen content. In particular, the alum and aluminum chloride mixed treatment group showed low pH and ammonia volatilization, and high EC and total nitrogen content for poultry litter. As a result, when focusing on high school laboratory research, the alum and aluminum chloride mixed agent treatment fulfilled its role as an alternative additive for ammonia reduction. In addition, this approach can be suggested as a method to solve difficulties in adapting to the field through a practical cooperative relationship with livestock farms.

Use of high yield pulp and recycled fiber as raw materials and water system closure result in higher fines content and buildup of organic and inorganic contaminants in white water. These are detrimental for the effectiveness of chemical additives including retention aids. Thus it is imperative to employ a retention systems that maintains its efficiency in closed papermaking system for reducing fresh water consumption. The performance of four different microparticle retention systems including cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM)/bentonite, highly charged cationic starch (HCS)/silica, C-PAM/micropolymer, cationic guar gum (CGG)/silica was evaluated and compared at three different levels of papermaking system closure. Buildup of detrimental substances in a closed white water system increased cationic demand and finally reduced the performance of retention systems. Cationic starch and guar gums maintained their effectiveness in retention in closed white water systems contaminated with anionic trashes because of their structural rigidity and hydrogen bonding ability. Particularly, cationic guar gums, due its stiffness of molecular structure, appeared perform better than catinonic starch.

The behavior of the burn-on in sand mold has been investigated by varying the pouring metal, bonding materials, additive materials and molding sand. The results obtained from thease experiments are as follows; 1) The burn-on layer of silica sand decreased in order of carbon steel, gray cast iron and stainless steel, and thease burn layer proceeded mostly by producing FeO. 2) The burning reaction of silica sand mold in carbon steel castings declined with increasingly bentonite content, but water-glass scarcely took part in the burn-on reaction. 3) The addition of feldspar and seacoal to silica sand promoted the inhibiting burn-on. 4) The burn-on layer of sand mold decreased of silica sand, chromite sand and olivine sand.
Adequate design of engineered barriers, including canister, buffer and backfill, is important for the safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Three-dimensional computer simulations were carried out under different condition to examine the thermal and mechanical behavior of engineered barriers and rock mass. The research looked at five areas of importance, the effect of the swelling pressure, water content of buffer, density of compacted bentonite, emplacement type and the selection of failure criteria. The results highlighted the need to consider tensile stress in the outer shell of a canister due to thermal expansion of the canister and the swelling pressure from the buffer for a more reliable design of an underground repository system. In addition, an adequate failure criterion should be used for the buffer and backfill.
This study investigated both water content and penetration resistance of small cone of various clay soils that were made of Kaolinite and Bentonite with different mixing ratios and compared the results with those of the existing dynamic (Casagrande test) and static (fall cone test) tests directly. The comparison showed that the water content at the inflection point on a curve of water content and penetration resistance was very similar to the liquid limit from a fall cone test. The penetration resistance of small cone at the inflection point was 0.2 kPa, and it was ascertained that the water content at the inflection point represents a liquid limit of clay soils. From the study results, it was found that the penetration resistance of 0.2 kPa with the small cone can be an indicator of the liquid limit of clay soils in practice. Finally a test procedure to measure the liquid limit of clay soil based on a penetration resistance of small cone was proposed.
A study on the undrained behavior of isotropically consolidated clay-sand mixtures was carried out using the automated triaxial testing apparatus. Overconsolidated ratio, effective mean pressure and clay content( up to 20% bentonite) were the factors varied in the experimental investigation. Undrained behavior(strength and pore water pressure generation during shear in triaxial loading) depends upon overconsolidation ratio, confining pressure and clay content. Significant changes in undrained compression characteristics occurred at around 20% of clay contents in the sand. The test results were analyzed and their behaviors were interpreted within the framework of plasticity constitutive model for clay-sand mixtures. Possible physical bases for the proposed forms are discussed. Validation of the applied model using the laboratory results is also given.
