  • Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technique method using a resonance frequency mode was carried out for woodceramics made by different carbonizing temperature (600, 800, 1000, $1200^{\circ}C$) for Broussonetia kazinoki Sieb. Dynamic modulus of elasticity increased with increasing carbonizing temperature. There was a close relationship of dynamic modulus of elasticity and static bending modulus of elasticity to MOR. Therefore, the dynamic modulus of elasticity using resonance frequency mode is useful as a nondestructive evaluation method for predicting the MOR of woodceramics made by different carbonizing temperature for B. kazinoki Sieb.

  • In this study, hybrid CLT research and development trends were analyzed to improve the low rolling shear strength of CLT, a large wooden panel used in high-rise wooden buildings. Through this, basic data that can be used in research and development directions for localization of CLT were prepared. As a way to improve the low rolling shear strength, the use of hardwood lamina, the change of the lamina arrangement angle, and the use of structural composite materials are mainly used. Rolling shear strength and shear modulus of hardwood lamina are more than twice as high as softwood lamina. It confirmed that hardwoods can be used and unused species can be used. Rolling shear strength 1.5 times, shear modulus 8.3 times, bending stiffness 4.1 times improved according to the change of the layer arrangement angle, and the CLT strength was confirmed by reducing the layer arrangement angle. Structural wood-based materials have been improved by up to 1.35 times MOR, 1.5 times MOE, and 1.59 times rolling shear strength when used as laminas. Block shear strength between the layer materials was also secured by 7.0 N/mm2, which is the standard for block shear strength. Through the results of previous studies, it was confirmed that the strength performance was improved when a structural wood based materials having a flexural performance of MOE 7.0 GPa and MOR 40.0 MPa or more was used. This was determined based on the strength of layered materials in structural wood-based materials. The optimal method for improving rolling shear strength is judged to be the most advantageous application of structural wood based materials with strength values according to existing specifications. However, additional research is needed on the orientation of CLT lamina arrangement according to the fiber arrangement of structural wood-based materials, and the block shear strength between lamina materials.

  • In this study, to improve bending strength performance of Korean white pine, we made the curved composite glulam that was reinforced with glass fiber materials and larch lamina. Five types of Korean white pine curved glulams were made depending on whether they had been reinforced or not and how they had been reinforced. Type-A, reference specimen, was produced only with Korean white pine lamina, and Type-B was with larch lamina in the same thickness. Type-C was made by inserting a glass fiber cloth of textile shape between the each layer. Type-D was reinforced with two glass fiber cloths, which were placed inside and outside of the outermost lamina. Type-E was reinforced with GFRP sheet in the same way as Type-D. As a result of this bending strength test, the modulus of rupture (MOR) of Type-B, Type-C and Type-E were increased by 29%, 6%, and 48% in comparison with Type-A. However, MOR of Type-D was decreased by 2% in comparison with Type-A. In the failure modes, Type-A, Type-B and Type-C were totally fractured at the maximum load. However, load values of Type-D and Type-E decreased slowly because of reinforcement of fracture suppression, and the GFRP sheet (Type-E) had better reinforcing effect on compressive stress and tensile stress than the glass fiber cloth (Type-D).

  • The hammer-milled characteristics of waste wood materials such as lumber, plywood, particleboard(PB), MDF and railroad tic were investigated in this study. The physical and mechanical properties of recycled boards according to types of recycled particle and the mixing ratios were also studied. The hammer-milled, waste wood materials had the dimensional distributions suitable for the core layer panicle. Bending strengths of recycled boards (one layer) were shown in order of plywood, PB(laboratory-fabricated with particles used in the PB factory), lumber, tego film-overlaid plywood, MDF, waste railroad tie, PB(factory-made) and LPL-overlaid PB. Cured resin and creosote containing waste wood contributed to dimensional stability of reconstituted boards. Considering the mixing effects between lumber and plywood with recycled PB particle, lumber particle was contributive to bending strength, MOE and internal bond(IB) strength, whereas plywood particle was contributive to dimensional stability. The bending and IB strength of 3 layer boards composing only recycled waste wood particles in core layer of board were in order of lumber, plywood, PB and MDF. On the other hand, the thickness swelling was in order of PB, lumber, plywood and MDF. Bending strength of the 3 layer boards mixed with recycled PB-particle in the core layer had a decreasing tendency, as the mixing ratios of recycled PB-particles increased. The dimensional stability of 3 layer recycled board was improved as the mixing ratio of recycled PB-particle increased same as in one layer. Formaldehyde emission of boards fabricated with recycled PB-particles in the core layer of the PB was in the range of E2 grade (below 5.0mg/l).

  • This research was conducted to examine the effect of bonding on the bending and shear strength of COMPLY-board when used with meranti face veneer and fire retardant treated particle-board core. For ammonium sulfate, modulus of rupture (MOR) of COMPLY-board increased with increasing chemical concentration up to 10 percent and then decreased after that concentration. However, Minalith showed reverse effect to the result for ammonium sulfate. Modulus of elasticity (MOE) of COMPLY-hoard decreased with increasing chemical concentration and its differences were not significant between concentration. Shear strength was shown better when treated with ammonium sulfate than with Minalith. Wood failure of COMPLY increased with increasing chemical concentration up to 15 percent and then decreased after that concentration. The products of parallel and cross veneer laminated were better than those of COMPLY composed of fire retardant treated particle-board core. Non-treated particle-board was the least in strength. MOE of fire retardant treated COMPLY increased by 136 percent and its MOE by 170 percent as compared with non treated particle-board.

  • Research was conducted at the Wood Materials and Engineering Laboratory, Washington State University, Pullman, WA to evaluate the effects of the sequence of wax addition, wax level, and wax type on mechanical properties and water resistance performance of isocyanate-bonded particleboard. Mechanical properties and water resistance performance were not influenced significantly by the sequence of wax addition. Internal bond and wet modulus of rupture in bending strength were decreased significantly by increasing the wax emulsion level, but dry modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in bending strength were not decreased significantly by increasing the wax emulsion level. Dry internal bond, dry and wet moduli of rupture, and modulus of elasticity were not decreased by increasing the solid wax level except for wet internal bond. The addition of 1.0 and 1.5% wax level did not produce any significant additional water resistance effect when compared to the addition of 0.5% wax level. Internal bond values of boards with solid wax addition showed significantly better results than boards with just a wax emulsion added. Modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and water resistance performance did not show significant difference between solid wax and wax emulsion.

  • Block-glued glulam is a structural material that can be used as a construction member of a large-section wooden building, which is produced by edgewise bonding of two or more glulam beam elements. The edgewise bonding performance of the block-glued glulam was examined through delamination test and block shear strength test. According to the test results, the block-glued glulam that was manufactured with 1.5 MPa of compressive pressure after applying $500g/m^2$ of Resorcinol adhesive showed the best edgewise bonding performance. The block-glued glulam produced in a good edgewise bonding condition was compared with a control glulam with the same section modulus for bending strength performance. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) in bending was similar to that of the control glulam. The modulus of rupture (MOR) of the block-glued glulam was higher by 27% than that of the control glulam. No interfacial failure or cohesive failure were observed in the edgewise bonding layer.

  • In this study, cross-laminated woods were made with spruce wood and the effects of annual ring angles of perpendicular direction laminae on static bending strength performance were investigated. Static bending strength performances of parallel laminated woods with all layers composed of laminae perpendicular to the grain ($P_{\bot}$ type) were in the order of $90^{\circ}$ > $0^{\circ}$ > $45^{\circ}$. The MOE and MOR for the $45^{\circ}$ annual ring angle were 0.0989 GPa and 3.25 MPa, and it showed the lowest values. By placing longitudinal-direction laminae in the core of $P_{\bot}$ type, the strength performances were markedly improved. In the case of cross-laminated woods with perpendicular-direction laminae in the faces ($C_{\bot}$ type), the bending strength performances were in the order of $90^{\circ}$ > $0^{\circ}$ > $45^{\circ}$, but the differences among annual ring angles were less than those of the parallel-laminated woods. In the case of cross-laminated woods with perpendicular-direction laminae in the core ($C_{\parallel}$ type), the bending strength performances were in the order of $45^{\circ}$ > $90^{\circ}$ > $0^{\circ}$ unlike $P_{\bot}$ type and $C_{\bot}$ type. The MOE and MOR for the $45^{\circ}$ annual ring angle were 12.0 GPa and 55.8 MPa, and it showed the highest values.

  • This study was carried out to examine the practicality of DAP[$(NH_4)_2HPO_4$] as fire retardant for plywood by static bending test the redried plywoods which had been soaked in 20% $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ solution. Being hot/cold soaked in the solution for 3/3, 6/3, 9/3 and 12/3 hours and redried by cyclic press-drying method at the platen temp. of 130, 145, 100 and $175^{\circ}C$, the treated plywoods were tested to offer the mechanical data, that is, $S_{pl}$(stress at proportional limit), MOE(modulus of elasticity), MOR(modulus of rupture) and $W_{pl}$(work per unit volume to proportional limit ) in flexure. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. $S_{pl}$ of fire retardant treated plywoods ("FRP" would be used hereinafter) decreased as the platen temperature increased, but it was superior to that of non-treated plywoods(Control) at $160^{\circ}C$ or higher. 2. MOE of FRP decreased roughly with the increase of temperature, hut this tendency was not constant. And the value of FRP was higher than that of Control even at $175^{\circ}C$. 3. MOR of FRP showed same temperature-dependent tendency as MOE, but it was influenced more sensitively at the higher temperature. 4. $W_{pl}$ of FRP also decreased gradually with the increase of platen temperature and the value in DAP 9/3 treatment was Jess than 70% of control plywoods. 5. In view of redrying time and mechanical properties, the most reasonable platen temperature for DAP treated FRP was $160^{\circ}C$ in this study.
