Block-glued glulam is a structural material that can be used as a construction member of a large-section wooden building, which is produced by edgewise bonding of two or more glulam beam elements. The edgewise bonding performance of the block-glued glulam was examined through delamination test and block shear strength test. According to the test results, the block-glued glulam that was manufactured with 1.5 MPa of compressive pressure after applying $500g/m^2$ of Resorcinol adhesive showed the best edgewise bonding performance. The block-glued glulam produced in a good edgewise bonding condition was compared with a control glulam with the same section modulus for bending strength performance. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) in bending was similar to that of the control glulam. The modulus of rupture (MOR) of the block-glued glulam was higher by 27% than that of the control glulam. No interfacial failure or cohesive failure were observed in the edgewise bonding layer.
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technique method using a resonance frequency mode was carried out for woodceramics made by different carbonizing temperature (600, 800, 1000, $1200^{\circ}C$) for Broussonetia kazinoki Sieb. Dynamic modulus of elasticity increased with increasing carbonizing temperature. There was a close relationship of dynamic modulus of elasticity and static bending modulus of elasticity to MOR. Therefore, the dynamic modulus of elasticity using resonance frequency mode is useful as a nondestructive evaluation method for predicting the MOR of woodceramics made by different carbonizing temperature for B. kazinoki Sieb.

This study was performed to evaluate the engineering properties of surlightweight polymer concrete using synthetic lightweight aggregate. The following conclusions were drawn; 1. The unit weight was in the range of 0.849~0.969t/$m^3$, the unit weights of those concrete were decreased by 58 ~ 63% than that of the normal cement concrete. 2. The highest strength was achieved by $P_1$, and compressive strength was increased by 93% and bending strength by 364% than that of the normal cement concrete, respectively. 3. The ultrasonic pulse velocity was in the range of 2, 346~2, 702m/s, which was low compared to that of the normal cement concrete. 4. The dynamic modulus of elasticity was in the range of $1.561{\times} 10{^5}~1.916{\times} 10{^5}kgf/cm^2$, which was approximately 52~98% of that of the normal cement concrete. 5. The compressive and bending strength were increased with the increase of unit weight. But, the dynamic modulus of elasticity and ultrasonic pulse velocity were decreased with the increase of unit weight.
In forest products industry, a variety of nondestructive evaluation techniques are now being used to assess the mechanical properties of structural lumber. Ultrasonic and longitudinal vibration technique are frequently used to assess the modulus of elasticity(MOE) of lumber. The objective of this research was to evaluate the MOE and modulus of rupture(MOR) of small-diameter of Larix log(Larix kaempferi Carr.), using these techniques. In this study, 50 small-diameter logs were nondestructiveively evaluated. The dynamic modulus of elasticity(Eu) of the logs was first evaluated, using an ultrasonic method. After ultrasonic tests, the logs were measured using a longitudinal vibration technique(Ev). Static bending test was then performed on the logs to obtain the static modulus of elasticity(Es) and modulus of rupture of these logs. In general, the dynamic MOE (Ev) of logs was closely co..elated with the stati, MOE for log. Based on the results of these experiments, it can be concluded that small-diameter Larix logs can be successfully evaluated by Ultrasonic and longitudinal vibration technique. The experimental results indicated that the ultrasonic technique is effective to the log, which contains many knots. The longitudinal vibration technique is effective to the log, in which many cracks are included.
To improve the bending strength of sawdustboard, verious resin contents of 10, 13, 16, and 19% were applied to the thin shell (face layer) composed with wire net or not. The shell effect of sawdust and wire net composition formed with core sawdustboard were evaluated. Forcusing on the effects of wire net composition and noncomposition including a comparison with chipboard and veneer complyboard, bending properties (Modulus of rupture (MOR), Modulus of elasticity (MOE), Stress at proportional limit ($S_{pl}$). Work to maximum load ($W_{ml}$))were analyzed and discussed. 1. In modulus of rutpute, veneer comply was the highest (621.5 kg/$cm^2$), and next decreasing order was wire net composition (159.1 kg/$cm^2$), chipboard (81.75 kg/$cm^2$), and wire net noncomposition (76.21 kg/$cm^2$) as in modulus of elasticity, work to maximum load, except for stress at proportional limit. 2. The highly significant effects were shown in both wire net composition and noncomposition, at the same time wire net composition exceeded two times of noncomposition throughout resin contents in bending properties. Chipboard was similar to the mean or 16% resin content in noncomposirion. 3. Every board in wire net composition above 10% resin content was beyond 100 kg/$cm^2$ in MOR, minimum allowable strength for structural use according to KS F 3104. In conclusion, the feasibility for improving the bending strength of weak sawdustboard by wire net composed shell was offered.
This study was carried out to estimate the effects of density and mixing ratio of mandarin peels on the bending performances of the sawdust-mandarin peels particle boards. The board density influenced significantly to the bending performance of boards. Dynamic modulus of elasticity (dMOE) and static modulus of elasticity (sMOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) of particle boards decreased with an increase in the mixing ratio of mandarin peels at the board densities of $0.4g/cm^3$ and $0.5g/cm^3$. High correlations were found between the dMOE and sMOE, and dMOE and MOR of particle boards prepared. Therefore, it was concluded that the dMOE obtained by free vibration test using resonance frequency could be used for predicting the sMOE and MOR of sawdust-mandarin peels particle boards.
This study was performed to analyze the mechanical properties of tropical hybrid cross-laminated timber (CLT) with bamboo laminated board as the core layer in order to evaluate the possibility of its use as a CLT material. Bamboo board was used as the core layer and the tropical species Acacia mangium willd., from Indonesia, was used as the lamination in the outer layer. The modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and shear strength of the hybrid CLT were measured according to APA PRG 320-2018 Standard for Performance-Rated Cross-Laminated Timber. The results show that the bending MOE of the hybrid CLT was found to be 2.76 times higher than SPF (Spruce Pine Fir) CLT. The reason why the high MOE value was shown in bamboo board and hybrid CLT applied bamboo board is because of high elasticity of bamboo fiber. However, the shear strength of the hybrid CLT was 0.8 times lower than shear strength of SPF CLT.
The selected physical and mechanical properties of non-certificated LVL circulated in domestic lumber market were investigated and compared to relevant standards. The tested LVL passed the moisture content and the soaking delamination rate limit as per domestic (KS) and Japanese standard (JAS). The evaluated mechanical properties were flatwise/edgewise bending strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), horizontal shear and compressive strength. The 30 mm-thick LVL showed significantly higher bending strength than that of the 25 mm-thick LVL. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) showed same tendency in the results of bending strength. The edgewise bending strength and MOE were higher than that of flatwise bending strength and MOE. The horizontal shear strength values were also showed similar results to bending strength values. The tested results were compared each other and each products were graded according to JAS 701 grade specification. The failure mode of LVL in bending test showed the similar failure mode of solidwood that failed in a simple tension manner (splintery tension). The glue line failure was severe in 25 mm-thick specimens due to concentration of shear stress in layer discontinuity containing small voids and starved glue lines. In horizontal shear strength test, failure mode of LVL showed the typical horizontal shear failure. Compressive specimens failed with fiber crushing in company with apparent delamination that splitted along the length of the specimens. From the results, the complete bonding between lamination and consistency in thin veneer layer were considered as a critical factor in the mechanical properties of LVL. Moreover, the standard test procedure and specification for non-certificated LVL should be required to check the performance of uncertificated materials.
Research was conducted at the Wood Materials and Engineering Laboratory, Washington State University, Pullman, WA to evaluate the effects of the sequence of wax addition, wax level, and wax type on mechanical properties and water resistance performance of isocyanate-bonded particleboard. Mechanical properties and water resistance performance were not influenced significantly by the sequence of wax addition. Internal bond and wet modulus of rupture in bending strength were decreased significantly by increasing the wax emulsion level, but dry modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in bending strength were not decreased significantly by increasing the wax emulsion level. Dry internal bond, dry and wet moduli of rupture, and modulus of elasticity were not decreased by increasing the solid wax level except for wet internal bond. The addition of 1.0 and 1.5% wax level did not produce any significant additional water resistance effect when compared to the addition of 0.5% wax level. Internal bond values of boards with solid wax addition showed significantly better results than boards with just a wax emulsion added. Modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and water resistance performance did not show significant difference between solid wax and wax emulsion.
Water repellent preservative (WRP) treated and untreated, small-sized specimens prepared from semiwater resistant, water resistant, and tegofilm-overlaid plywood were exposed to outdoor weathering for one year. Exterior durability of specimens was evaluated on the basis of changes in dynamic modulus of elasticity, degree of delamination, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and glueline shear strength. Among untreated specimens, tegofilm-overlaid plywood showed the best outdoor durability, and durability between semiwater resistant and water resistant plywood was similar. Although WRP treatment increased the durability of all types of plywoods, the effect of treatment on the increase in durability for semi water resistant plywood was not distinct. Accordingly, it can be concluded that semi water resistant plywood, which is used for temporary construction such as concrete formwork in our country, can not be inadequate for exterior use, regardless of WRP treatment. The bending strength and glueline shear strength of untreated water resistant plywood measured after weathering for one year did not exceed the minimum value specified by Korean Standard (KS), thereby the outdoor use of water resistant plywood was not desirable without WRP treatment. Exterior durability between treated water resistant plywood and untreated tegofilm-overlaid plywood was very similar. This result suggests that if an exposed plywood surface is treated with WRP regularly water resistant plywood can be used for temporary construction. This suggestion, however, needs to be investigated. In summary, semiwater resistant plywood cannot be used for temporay construction regardless of WRP treatment. Water resistant plywood can be used only with WRP treatment. Comparing the cost of tegofilm-overlaid plywood to costs of water resistant plywood and WRP treatment, however, it can be concluded that use of tegofilm-overlaid plywood for temporay constrution is strongly suggested from the point of view of both outdoor durability and costs.
