The piled raft foundations are subjected to lateral loading under the action of wind and earthquake loads. Their bearing behavior and flexural responses under these loadings are of prime concern for researchers and practitioners. The insufficient experimental studies on piled rafts subjected to lateral loading lead to a limited understanding of this foundation system. Lateral load sharing between pile and raft in a laterally loaded piled raft is scarce in literature. In the present study, lateral load-displacement, load sharing, bending moment distribution, and raft inclinations of the piled raft foundations have been discussed through an instrumented scaled down model test in 1 g condition. The contribution of raft in a laterally loaded piled raft has been evaluated from the responses of pile group and piled raft foundations attributing a variety of influential system parameters such as pile spacing, slenderness ratio, group area ratio, and raft embedment. The study shows that the raft contributes 28-49% to the overall lateral capacity of the piled raft foundation. The results show that the front pile experiences 20-66% higher bending moments in comparison to the back pile under different conditions in the pile group and piled raft. The piles in the piled raft exhibit lower bending moments in the range of 45-50% as compared to piles in the pile group. The raft inclination in the piled raft is 30-70% less as compared to the pile group foundation. The lateral load-displacement and bending moment distribution in piles of the single pile, pile group, and piled raft has been presented to compare their bearing behavior and flexural responses subjected to lateral loading conditions. This study provides substantial technical aid for the understanding of piled rafts in onshore and offshore structures to withstand lateral loadings, such as those induced by wind and earthquake loads.

Critical response of seawater pump impeller shaft structure to various exciting loads is a fundamental factor in re-designing of the structure after its functional failure. In this paper, a typical case of the shaft structure's failure is investigated for re-designing purposes. Failure causes of interest are excessive bending moment, fatigue loads and dynamic resonance due to relevant motor rotation and unbalancing of the rotation loads. Static analyses of shaft structure under the conditions of concerned loads are carried out, followed by a dynamic investigation of the effects of resonance between the shaft and the motor on the structure. The relevant structural analyses are carried out using the Finite Element Methods combined with ANSYS code. Based on these, the primary cause for the shaft's structural failure is obtained. It is found that the change of the bending stiffness of the shaft is the primary concern in the re-designing process. A guideline for the re-design process of the seawater pump shaft structure is established, and a re-design scheme of the structure is proposed.
The leak-before-break(LBB) design on the large structures such as ship's hull, tank structure, pressure vessels etc. is one of the most inportant subjects for the evaluation and the assurance of safety. In these structures, various loads are acting. In some structural members, therefore, out-of-plane stress due to bending often may become with in-plane stress due to stretching. In the present report, the characteristics of fatigue life and peneration behaviour from a surface cracked plate under combined tension and bending have been studied experimentally and analytically by using eccentricity. Estimation of fatigue crack growth was done with the Newman-Raju formula before penetration, and with the stress intensity factor after penetration proposed by the author. Calculated aspect ratio showed the good agreement with the experimental result. It was also found that particular crack growth behaviour and crack shape after penetration can be satisfactorily evaluated using the K solution proposed.
The long-term behaviour of simply supported composite steel-concrete beams with deformable connectors subjected to skew bending and torsion is presented. The problem is dealt with by recurring to the displacement method, assuming the bending and torsional curvatures and the longitudinal deformations of each sectional part as unknowns and obtaining a system of differential and integro-differential equations. Some solving methods are presented, in order to obtain exact and approximate solutions and evaluate the precision of the approximate ones. A case study is then presented. For the sake of clearness, the responses of the composite beam under loads applied in different directions are studied separately, in order to correctly evaluate the effects of each load condition.
A three-dimensional source distribution method is presented for the prediction of motions and vertical bending moments of ships travelling with forward speed in regular waves. Comparisons between theoretical and experimental results are shown for the motion responses and vertical bending moment of the S175 container ship model by Watanabe et al. The model ship was made of synthetic resins so as to simulate bending rigidity of a full scale ship. Numerical results are compared with experimental and numerical ones obtained in the literature. The results of comparison confirmed the validity of the proposed approach.

The bending buckling behavior of circular cylindrical shell is studied. The classical analysis by Love type solution and the package program LUSAS for the structural analysis are used to estimate the critical stresses of circular cylindrical shells under axial compression and bending loads. In this paper, the Love type of buckling equation is carefully investigated and numerical results are presented for a wide range of radius-to-thickness (R/t) ratios and length-to-radius (L/R) ratios. These results show that the maximum critical bending stress is about 30~80% greater than the critical compressive stress

Carbon fiber sheet is attractive due to its good tensile strength, resistance to corrosion, and low weight. The strengthening of concrete structures with externally bonded carbon fiber sheets is increasingly being used for repair and rehabilitation of existing structures. However CFS strengthened beams break down under the service loads. As rupture strain is not reached ultimate value, reduction of the tensile strength is recommended. This study evaluate CFS tensile strength reduction factor which is required to analyze bending moment.

A numerical procedure for the analysis of slender arch buckling problems for uniform dead weight is presented in this paper. Such loading changes in the arch profile. The problem is nonlinear. The numerical procedure is limited to an inextensible analysis and to elastic behavior. Based upon a numerical integration technique developed by Newmark for straight beams, a large deflection bending analysis is combined with small deflection buckling routines to formulate the numerical procedure. The numerical procedure is composed of a combination of the numerical integration and successive approximations procedure. The results obtained in this study are as follows : 1.The critical loads obtained in this study coincide with the results by Austin so that the algorithm developed in this study is verified. 2.The numerical results are converged with good precision when the half arch is divided into 10 segments in both Prime and Quadratic section. 3.The critical loads are decreased as the ratios of rise versus span are increased. 4.The critical loads are increased as the moments of inertia at the ends are increased. 5.The critical loads of Prime section are larger than that of Quadratic section under the same profile conditions.
The bending problem of Euler-Bernoulli discontinuous beams is dealt with, in which the discontinuities are due to the loads and eventually to essential constrains applied along the beam axis. In particular, the loads are modelled as random delta-correlated processes acting along the beam axis, while the ulterior eventual discontinuities are produced by the presence of external rollers applied along the beam axis. This kind of structural model can be considered in the static study of bridge beams. In the present work the exact expression of the response quantities are given in terms of means and variances, thanks to the use of the stochastic analysis rules and to the use of the generalized functions. The knowledge of the means and the variances of the internal forces implies the possibility of applying the reliability ${\beta}$-method for verifying the beam.

Practical stability design method of main members of cable-stayed bridges is proposed and discussed through a design example. For this purpose, initial tensions of stay cables and axial forces of main members are firstly determined using initial shaping analysis of bridges under dead loads. And then the effective buckling length using system elastic/inelastic buckling analysis and bending moments considering $P-{\delta}-{\Delta}$ effect by second-order elastic analysis are calculated for main girder and pylon members subjected to both axial forces and moments, respectively. Particularly, load combinations of dead and live loads, in which maximum load effects due to live loads are obtained, are taken into account and effects of live loads on effective buckling lengths are investigated.
