Analysis of the Effect of Corner Points and Image Resolution in a Mechanical Test Combining Digital Image Processing and Mesh-free Method (디지털 이미지 처리와 강형식 기반의 무요소법을 융합한 시험법의 모서리 점과 이미지 해상도의 영향 분석)

  • In this paper, we present a DIP-MLS testing method that combines digital image processing with a rigid body-based MLS differencing approach to measure mechanical variables and analyze the impact of target location and image resolution. This method assesses the displacement of the target attached to the sample through digital image processing and allocates this displacement to the node displacement of the MLS differencing method, which solely employs nodes to calculate mechanical variables such as stress and strain of the studied object. We propose an effective method to measure the displacement of the target's center of gravity using digital image processing. The calculation of mechanical variables through the MLS differencing method, incorporating image-based target displacement, facilitates easy computation of mechanical variables at arbitrary positions without constraints from meshes or grids. This is achieved by acquiring the accurate displacement history of the test specimen and utilizing the displacement of tracking points with low rigidity. The developed testing method was validated by comparing the measurement results of the sensor with those of the DIP-MLS testing method in a three-point bending test of a rubber beam. Additionally, numerical analysis results simulated only by the MLS differencing method were compared, confirming that the developed method accurately reproduces the actual test and shows good agreement with numerical analysis results before significant deformation. Furthermore, we analyzed the effects of boundary points by applying 46 tracking points, including corner points, to the DIP-MLS testing method. This was compared with using only the internal points of the target, determining the optimal image resolution for this testing method. Through this, we demonstrated that the developed method efficiently addresses the limitations of direct experiments or existing mesh-based simulations. It also suggests that digitalization of the experimental-simulation process is achievable to a considerable extent.

A Study on the Mechanical and Physical Properties of Sawdustboard combined with Plastic Chip (플라스틱칩 결체(結締) 톱밥보드의 기계적(機械的) 및 물리적(物理的) 성질(性質)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • In order to study the effect of sawdustboard combined with plastic chips, 0.5mm($T_1$), 1mm($T_2$), 1.4mm($T_3$) thick nylon fiber. polypropylene rope fiber(RP), and 0.23mm thick moth-proof polypropylene net fiber(NP) were cut into 0.5, 1, 2cm long plastic chips. Thereafter, sawdustboard combined with plastic chips prepared as the above and plastic non-combined sawdustboard(control) were manufactured into 3 types of one-, two-, and three layer with 5 or 10% combination level. By the discussions and results at this study, the significant conclusions of mechanical and physical properties were summarized as follows: 1. The MORs were shown in the order of 3 layer> 2 layer> 1 layer among plastic non-combined boards, and $T_3$ < $T_2$ < $T_1$ < RP (NP(5%) < NP(l0%) among plastic combined boards. In 2cm long plastic chip in 1 layer board, the highest strength through all the composition was recognized. 1 layer board showing the lower strength with 0.5cm plastic chip rendered to the bending strength improvement by 2 or 3 layer board composition. On the other hand, 2 or 3 layer combined with 1, 2cm long polypropylene net fiber chips incurred MOR's conspicuous decrease requiring optimum plastic chip combined level and consideration to combined type. 2. MOE in plastic non-combined 3 layer board exhibited sandwich construction effect by higher resin content application to surface layer in the order of 3layer>1layer>2layer with the highest stiffness of the board combined with polypropylene chip, while nylon chip-combined board had little difference from plastic non-combined board. In relevant to length and layer effect, 3 layer board combined with the 0.5cm long polypropylene net fiber chip in 5% and 10% combined level presented 34-43% and 44-76% stiffness increase against plastic non-combined board(control), respectively. Moreover, in 1 layer board, 30% stiffness increase with 10% against 5% combined level in the 1 and 2cm long polypropylene net fiber chip was obtained. 3. Stress at proportional limit(Spl) showing the fiber relationship (r: 0.81-0.97) between MOR presented in the order of 1 layer<2 layer<3 layer in plastic non-combined board. Correspondingly, combined effect by layer and plastic chip length was similar to MOR's. 4. Differently from previous properties(MOR, MOE, Spl). work to maximum load(Wml) of 2 layer board approached to that of 3 layer board. Conforming the above phenomenon. 2 layer combined with 0.5cm long polypropylene net fiber chip kept the greater work than 1 layer. The polypropylene combined board superior to nylon -and plastic non - combined board seemed to have greater anti - failing capacity. 5.   • Ship structures are basically an assembly of plate elements and estimation load-carrying capacity or the ultimate strength is one of the most important criterion for estimated safety assessment and rational design on the ship structure. Also, Structural elements making up ship plated structures do not work separately against external load. One of the critical collapse events of a ship structure is the occurrence of overall buckling and plastic collapse of deck or bottom structure subjected to longitudinal bending. So, the deck and the bottom plates are reinforced by a number af longitudinal stiffeners to increase their strength and load-carrying capacity. For a rational design avoiding such a sudden collapse, it is very important to know the buckling and plastic behaviour or collapse pattern of the stiffened plate under axial compression. In this present study, to investigate effect af modeling range, the finite element method are used and their results are compared varying the analysis ranges. When making the FEA model, six types of structural modeling are adopted varying the cross section of stiffener. In the present paper, a series of FEM elastoplastic large deflection analyses is performed on a stiffened plate with fiat-bar, angle-bar and tee-bar stiffeners. When the applied axial loading, the influences of cross-sectional geometries on collapse behaviour are discussed. The purpose of the present study is examined to numerically calculate the characteristics of buckling and ultimate strength behavior according to the analysis method of ship's stiffened plate subject to axial loading.

A Study on the Current Measurement Using birefringence Fiber (복굴절 광섬유를 이용한 전류측정에 관한 연구)

  • Accuracy of current measurement in fiber optic current sensor(FOCS), especially, unidirectional polarimetric fiber optic current sensor(PFOCS) is affected by the environment perturbations such as acoustic vibrations changes to the sensing fiber, and intrinsic perturbations such as the bending fiber that the sensing fiber wound around a current carrying wire. The perturbations affect the birefringence properties of sensing fiber in sensor head and cause false current readings. Thus, using compensation technique, reciprocal PFOCS, for unidirectional PFOCS the perturbations are suppressed. In this paper, we carried out the numerical analysis of performance in reciprocal PFOCS including the degree of polarization error, and false current of environmental and intrinsic perturbations on the sensing fiber. Also, we compared the effect of mirror with the faraday rotation mirror(FRM) in reciprocal PFOCS configuration. And the different optical source's wavelengths, 633nm and 1300nm is used. In the results, at 633nm, using mirror and FRM, the degree of polarization error is calculated to $2.3\%$ and $0.0196\%$, respectively. At $1300{\cal}nm$ using mirror and FRM the degree of polarization error is calculated to $9.97\%$ and $0.0196\%$, respectively. Also, compared with false current, the results is calculated to $9.82{\times}10^{-9}A$ and $1.4{\times}10^{-17}A$, respectively, and show that the reciprocal PFOCS is more robust configuration than unidiretionnal PFOCS for environmental and intrinsic perturbations.

Modified Equation for Ductility Demand Based Confining Reinforcement Amount of RC Bridge Columns (철근콘크리트 교각의 소요연성도에 따른 심부구속철근량 산정식 수정)

  • An equation for calculating confining reinforcement amount of RC bridge columns, specified in the current bridge design codes, has been made to provide additional load-carrying strength for concentrically loaded columns. The additional load-carrying strength will be equal to or slightly greater than the resistant strength of a column against axial load, which is lost because the cover concrete spalls off. The equation considers concrete compressive strength, yield strength of transverse reinforcement, and the section area ratio as major variables. Among those variables, the section area ratio between the gross section and the core section, varying by cover thickness, is a variable which considers the strength in the compression-controlled region. Therefore, the cross section ratio does not have a large effect in the aspect of ductile behavior of the tension-controlled region, which is governed by bending moment rather than axial force. However, the equation of the design codes for calculating confining reinforcement amount does not directly consider ductile behavior, which is an important factor for the seismic behavior of bridge columns. Consequently, if the size of section is relatively small or if the section area ratio becomes excessively large due to the cover thickness increased for durability, too large an amount of confining reinforcement will be required possibly deteriorating the constructability and economy. Against this backdrop, in this study, comparison and analysis were performed to understand how the cover thickness influences the equation for calculating the amount of confining reinforcement. An equation for calculating the amount of confining reinforcement was also modified for reasonable seismic design and the safety. In addition, appropriateness of the modified equation was examined based on the results of various test results performed at home and abroad.

Analysis Model for Approximate Evaluation of Stiffness for Semi-Rigid Connection of Wooden Structures (목조 구조물 접합부의 강성에 대한 근사평가를 위한 해석모델)

  • Modern wooden structures usually are connected with steel fastener type connectors. And joints using multiple connectors in wooden structures will form semi-rigid connection. If connection in wooden structure would be designed to be pinned joint, the underestimate for loads transmitted through connection, would result in the deficient capacity of resistance in connection. And if joints in wooden structures would be assumed to be fully-rigid joint, amount of fasteners needed at the connection could be excessively increased. It will give a bad effect in the view of beauty, constructability and economy. Estimate for the reasonable stiffness of connection might be essential in design of reasonable connection in wooden structure. This paper will suggest analysis modelling technique that can represent approximate stiffness of connections using a common analysis program for double shear connection in order to give help in performing easily the design of wooden structure. It is verified that the suggested approximate analysis modelling technique could represent the behavior in connection by comparing the analysis results with test results for tensile, bending moment.

  • This paper deals with the numerical determination of the stress intensity factors of cracked aluminum plates under the mixed mode of $K_I$ and $K_{II}$ in glass-epoxy fiber reinforced composites. For the stress intensity factors, two different models are reviewed such as VCCT and two-step extension method. The p-convergent partial layerwise model is adopted to determine the fracture parameters in terms of energy release rates and stress intensity factors. The p-convergent approach is based on the concept of subparametric element. In assumed displacement field, strain-displacement relations and 3-D constitutive equations of a layer are obtained by combination of 2-D and 1-D higher-order shape functions. In the elements, Lobatto shape functions and Gauss-Lobatto technique are employed to interpolate displacement fields and to implement numerical quadrature. Using the models and techniques considered, effects of composite laminate configuration according to inclined angles and adhesive properties on the performance of bonded composite patch are investigated. In addition to these, the out-of-plane bending effect has been investigated across the thickness of patch repaired laminate plates due to the change of neutral axis. The present model provides accuracy and simplicity in terms of stress intensity factors, stress distribution, number of degrees of freedom, and energy release rates as compared with previous works in literatures.

Analysis Models of Concrete Slabs-on-Grade Considering Horizontal Resistance at Slab Bottom and Behavior under Thermal Loads (슬래브 하부 수평저항을 고려한 지반위의 콘크리트 슬래브 해석 모델 및 온도하중에 의한 거동 분석)

  • The behavior of the concrete slabs on grade considering the horizontal resistance at the slab bottom, which exists due to the shear resistance of the foundation and the friction between the slab and the foundation, has been investigated when the slabs-on-grade are subjected to the thermal load. Analytical formulations have been developed to include the effect of the horizontal resistance at the slab bottom employing the thin plate on an elastic foundation that is widely used for the analysis of concrete slabs-on-grade and rigid pavement systems. Finite element formulations have then been developed using the plate bending elements and the flat shell elements. The solutions from the analytical and numerical models have been compared and showed very good agreement. The sensitivity of the horizontal resistance to the stresses of the concrete slab has been investigated with various values of the slab thickness, elastic modulus, and vortical stiffness of the foundation when subjected to the temperature gradient between the top and bottom of the slab and the uniform temperature drop throughout the slab depth. The analysis results show that the horizontal resistance at the plate bottom can significantly affect the stresses of the slab when the thermal loads are applied.

Performance Evaluation of Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer Using Epoxy Asphalt Binder (에폭시 아스팔트 바인더를 이용한 응력흡수층의 성능평가)

  • Asphalt overlay on deteriorated concrete pavement has a problem of early damage due to reflective cracking. There is a need for a new method capable of reducing reflection cracking and ensuring the durability of pavement. The purpose of this study was to obtain durability of asphalt overlay with stress absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI) using epoxy asphalt binder. The tensile performance, durability, water resistance and bonding performance of Epoxy-SAMI were evaluated by various tests. As a result of tests, Epoxy-SAMI meets the quality standard of the bridge waterproofing material. The repeated direct tensile test was carried out to investigate the effect of reflective cracking reduction. When the Epoxy-SAMI was applied, it had 1.2~1.56 times higher reflective cracking resistance than PSMA asphalt concrete with the thickness of 10cm even if the section thickness decreased. 4-point bending beam test results showed the number of fatigue failures increased 7.5 times when Epoxy-SAMI was applied. The Epoxy-SAMI was found to be effective in improving the durability of the asphalt pavement overlay because it serves to prevent reflective cracking, increase lifespan, and function as a waterproof layer.

The effect of temperature changes on force level of superelastic nickel-titanium archwires (온도 변화가 교정용 니켈-티타늄 호선의 하중값에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of intraoral temperature changes on the orthodontic force level of a superelastic nickel-titanium alloy wire. Methods: Nickel-titanium archwires of $0.016"{\times}0.022"$ thickness were tested with a three point bending test setup, and temperature changes were applied. The force level changes according to temperature changes were measured at a 1.5 mm deflection during the loading phase and a 1.5 mm deflection during the unloading phase from a deflection to 3.1mm. Ten cycles of thermal cycling from baseline $(37^{\circ}C)$ to cold $(20^{\circ}C)$ or hot $(50^{\circ}C)$temperature were applied. Results: Alter thermal cycling, the force level during the loading phase decreased and the force level during the unloading phase increased even after the temperature was changed to the initial $37^{\circ}C$. Conclusions: The results suggest that the orthodontic force level can not return to the initial force level after temperature changes. When applying superelastic nickel-titanium archwires, we must consider that a lighter force than the loading force and a heavier force than the unloading force will be applied after intraoral temperature changes caused by eating and drinking.
