  • This paper presents a computational technique to predict roof crush resistance in early design stage of passenger car development. This technique use a simple F.E. model with nonlinear spring elements which represent plastic hinge behavior at weak areas. By assuming actual sections as equivalent simple sections, maximum bending moments which weak areas in major members can stand are theoretically calculated. Results from prediction of roof crush resistance are correlated well with test results.

  • The open section members have been used as the members of vehicle such as automotives, airplanes and trains. When vehicles are crashed, these members have absorption of the energy and it is necessary for retainment of the survival space, and as the result, the prediction for the displacement of members in this case of the crash of vehicles is very important. The displacements of members in this case of the crash of automotives show combined aspect of both axial collapse and bending collapse. In the rollover accident when bending collapse happen, the collapse of each members is progressed by the plastic hinge which made from bending moment, and therefore the research for the behavior of members under bending moment after collapse is necessary to determine the internal energy which the members can absorb and the deformed shapes of the members on the step of design. In this paper, the characteristics of bending collapse at the members of the open cross-section were studied with experiment and numerical analysis. We made a comparative studied of the result of the experiment, and changed the axis according to the parallel-axis theorem.

  • In order to improve the cracking resistance of reinforced concrete and give full play to the advantages of prefabricated assembly structure in construction, prestressed reinforced concrete composite beam (PRCC) is proposed. Through the bending static test of seven I-shaped beam specimens, the bending failure modes and bearing capacity of PRCC and reinforced concrete composite beam are compared and analyzed, and the effects of prestress size, prestressed reinforcement layout and prestress application sequence on the flexural behavior of PRCC beams are studied. The results show that the cracking load and ultimate load of PRCC beams significantly increased after prestressing, and prestressed tendons can effectively control the crack development. With the increase of prestressing degree, the deformation resistance and bending stiffness of PRCC beams are increased. The application sequence of prestress has little influence on the mechanical properties of PRCC beams. The crack width, stiffness and normal section bearing capacity of PRCC beam are analyzed, and the calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive method of angular distortion of the double-sided multi-pass butt weldment achieve it, the behavior of angular distortion in the butt weldment were investigated using comprehensive finite element analyses and experiments. The angular distortion in the multi-pass butt weldment strongly depends on the welding heat input(Q) and the effective bending rigidity of the weld throat. The effective bending rigidity of the first welding pass on the backing side was defined as the function of dimensionless parameter(k) and a bending rigidity of bead-on-plate weldment. Based on the results, the predictive equation for angular distortion of multi-pass butt weldment was proposed and verified by experiments.

  • Unique constitutive behavior of magnesium alloys as one of hexagonal close packed(hcp) metals has been implemented into the commercial finite element program ABAQUS. The constitutive equations can represent asymmetry in tension-compression yield stresses and flow curves. For the verification purpose, the springback of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet was measured using the unconstrained cylindrical bending test proposed in Numisheet'2002 benchmark committee. Besides the developed constitutive models, the isotropic models based on tensile and compressive properties were also considered for comparison purpose. The predicted results by the finite element analysis and corresponding experiments showed enhanced prediction capability in springback analysis.

  • In this study, effect of various material hardening models based on Holloman's isotropic, Ziegler's linear kinematic, non-linear kinematic and mixture of the isotropic and nonlinear kinematic hardening laws on springback prediction of titanium alloy (Ti-3Al-2.5V) in a tube rotary draw bending (RDB) process was investigated with presenting the keynotes for a comprehensive step by step ABAQUS simulation. Influence of mandrel on quality of the final product including springback, wall-thinning and cross-section deformation of the tube was investigated, too. Material parameters of the hardening models were obtained based on information of a uniaxial test. In particular, in the case of combined iso-nonlinear kinematic hardening the material constants were calibrated by a simple approach based on half-cycle data instead of several stabilized cycles ones. Moreover, effect of some material and geometrical parameters on springback was carried out. The results showed that using the various hardening laws separately cannot describe the material hardening behavior correctly. Therefore, it is concluded that combining the hardening laws is a good idea to have accurate springback prediction. Totally the results are useful for predicting and controlling springback and cross-section deformation in metal forming processes.

  • A novel precast concrete-encased steel composite beam, which can be abbreviated as PCES beam, is introduced in this paper. In order to investigate the shear behavior of this PCES beam, a test of eight full-scale PCES beam specimens was carried out, in which the specimens were subjected to positive bending moment or negative bending moment, respectively. The factors which affected the shear behavior, such as the shear span-to-depth aspect ratio and the existence of concrete flange, were taken into account. During the test, the load-deflection curves of the test specimens were recorded, while the crack propagation patterns together with the failure patterns were observed as well. From the test results, it could be concluded that the tested PCES beams could all exhibit ductile shear behavior, and the innovative shear connectors between the precast concrete and cast-in-place concrete, namely the precast concrete transverse diaphragms, were verified to be effective. Then, based on the shear deformation compatibility, a theoretical model for predicting the shear capacity of the proposed PCES beams was put forward and verified to be valid with the good agreement of the shear capacities calculated using the proposed method and those from the experiments. Finally, in order to facilitate the preliminary design in practical applications, a simplified calculation method for predicting the shear capacity of the proposed PCES beams was also put forward and validated using available test results.

  • In order to better predict the springback for friction stir welded DP590 steel sheet, the combined isotropic-kinematic hardening was formulated with considering the permanent softening behavior during reverse loading. As for yield function, the non-quadratic anisotropic yield function, Yld2000-2d, was used under plane stress condition. For the verification purposes, comparisons of simulation and experiments were performed here for the unconstrained cylindrical bending, the 2-D draw bending tests. For two applications, simulations showed good agreements with experiments.

  • This study presents a model to better understand the shear behavior of reinforced concrete walls subjected to lateral load. The scope of the study is limited to squat walls with height to length ratios not exceeding two, deformed in a double-curvature shape. This study is based on limited knowledge of the shear behavior of low-rise shear walls subjected to double-curvature bending. In this study, the wall ultimate strength is defined as the smaller of flexural and shear strengths. The flexural strength is calculated using a strength-of-material analysis, and the shear strength is predicted according to the softened strut-and-tie model. The corresponding lateral deflection of the walls is estimated by superposition of its flexibility sources of bending, shear and slip. The calculated results of the proposed procedure correlate reasonably well with previously reported experimental results.
