  • The response of functionally graded ceramic-metal plates is investigated using theoretical formulation, Navier's solutions, and a new displacement based on the high-order shear deformation theory are presented for static analysis of functionally graded plates. The theory accounts for a quadratic variation of the transverse shear strains across the thickness, and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factors. The plates are assumed to have isotropic, two-constituent material distribution through the thickness, and the modulus of elasticity of the plate is assumed to vary according to a power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Numerical results of the new refined plate theory are presented to show the effect of the material distribution on the deflections, stresses and fundamental frequencies. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the static and free vibration behavior of functionally graded plates.

  • In this paper, modified Kelvin's model has been used to analyze the orthotropic vibration frequencies of single walled carbon nanotubes with clamped-clamped and clamped-free boundary conditions. For this system the governing equation is developed with wave propagation approach. Armchair, zigzag and chiral structures are considered for the vibrational analysis to investigate the effect of different modes, in-plane rigidity and mass density per unit lateral area. Throughout the computations, on decreasing the length-to-diameter ratios, the frequencies of said structure increases. In addition, by increasing three different value of in-plane rigidity resulting frequencies also increase and frequencies decrease on increasing mass density per unit lateral area. The results generated using computer software MATLAB to furnish the evidence regarding applicability of present model and also verified by available published literature.

  • Critical multi-field loads and free vibration responses of the sandwich piezoelectric/piezomagnetic microplate subjected to combination of magnetoelectromechanical loads based on a thickness-stretched higher order shear deformable model using Hamilton's principle. The lateral displacement is assumed summation of bending, shearing and stretching functions. The elasti core is sandwiched by a couple of piezoelectric/piezomagnetic face-sheets subjected to electromagnetocmechanical loads. The work of external force is calculated with considering the in-plane mechanical, electrical and magnetic loads based on piezomagnetoelasticity relations. The critical multi field loading and natural frequency analysis are performed to investigate influence of geometric and loading parameters on the responses. A verification is performed for justification of the numerical results.

  • The paper presents the study on a change in modal parameters and structural stiffness of cable-stayed Fiberline Bridge made entirely of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composite used for 20 years in the fjord area of Kolding, Denmark. Due to this specific location the bridge structure was subjected to natural aging in harsh environmental conditions. The flexural properties of the pultruded GFRP profiles acquired from the analyzed footbridge in 1997 and 2012 were determined through three-point bending tests. It was found that the Young's modulus increased by approximately 9%. Moreover, the influence of the temperature on the storage and loss modulus of GFRP material acquired from the Fiberline Bridge was studied by the dynamic mechanical analysis. The good thermal stability in potential real temperatures was found. The natural vibration frequencies and mode shapes of the bridge for its original state were evaluated through the application of the Finite Element (FE) method. The initial FE model was created using the real geometrical and material data obtained from both the design data and flexural test results performed in 1997 for the intact composite GFRP material. Full scale experimental investigations of the free-decay response under human jumping for the experimental state were carried out applying accelerometers. Seven natural frequencies, corresponding mode shapes and damping ratios were identified. The numerical and experimental results were compared. Based on the difference in the fundamental natural frequency it was again confirmed that the structural stiffness of the bridge increased by about 9% after 20 years of service life. Data collected from this study were used to validate the assumed FE model. It can be concluded that the updated FE model accurately reproduces the dynamic behavior of the bridge and can be used as a proper baseline model for the long-term monitoring to evaluate the overall structural response under service loads. The obtained results provided a relevant data for the structural health monitoring of all-GFRP bridge.

  • In this paper, a new nonlocal hyperbolic refined plate model is presented for free vibration properties of functionally graded (FG) plates. This nonlocal nano-plate model incorporates the length scale parameter which can capture the small scale effect. The displacement field of the present theory is chosen based on a hyperbolic variation in the in-plane displacements through the thickness of the nano-plate. By dividing the transverse displacement into the bending and shear parts, the number of unknowns and equations of motion of the present theory is reduced, significantly facilitating structural analysis. The material properties are assumed to vary only in the thickness direction and the effective properties for the FG nano-plate are computed using Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. The governing equations of motion are derived based on the nonlocal differential constitutive relations of Eringen in conjunction with the refined four variable plate theory via Hamilton's principle. Analytical solution for the simply supported FG nano-plates is obtained to verify the theory by comparing its results with other available solutions in the open literature. The effects of nonlocal parameter, the plate thickness, the plate aspect ratio, and various material compositions on the dynamic response of the FG nano-plate are discussed.

  • In this work, a mathematical model of beam-column system carrying a double eccentric end mass system is investigated, and solved analytically based on the exact solution analysis. The model considers the case in which the double eccentric end mass is a rigid storage tank containing fluid. Both Timoshenko and Bernoulli-Euler beam bending theories are considered. Equation of motion, general solution and boundary conditions for the present system model are developed and presented in dimensional and non-dimensional format. Several important non-dimensional design parameters are introduced. Symbolic and/or explicit formulae of the frequency and mode shape equations are formulated. To the authors knowledge, the present reduced closed form symbolic and explicit frequency equations have not appeared in literature. For different applications, the results are validated using commercial finite element package, namely ANSYS. The beam-column system investigated in this paper is significant for many engineering applications, especially, in mechanical and structural systems.

  • A p-version of the finite element method in conjunction with the modeling dynamic method using the arc-length stretch deformation is considered to determine the bending natural frequencies of a cantilever flexible plate mounted on the periphery of a rotating hub. The plate Fourier p-element is used to set up the linear equations of motion. The transverse displacements are formulated in terms of cubic polynomials functions used generally in FEM plus a variable number of trigonometric shapes functions representing the internals DOF for the plate element. Trigonometric enriched stiffness, mass and centrifugal stiffness matrices are derived using symbolic computation. The convergence properties of the rotating plate Fourier p-element proposed and the results are in good agreement with the work of other investigators. From the results of the computation, the influences of rotating speed, aspect ratio, Poisson's ratio and the hub radius on the natural frequencies are investigated.

  • In the present paper, a simple quasi-3D integral higher-order beam theory (HBT) is presented, in which both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects are included for mechanical analysis of advanced composite beams with simply supported boundary conditions, handling mainly bending, buckling, and free vibration problems. The kinematics is based on a novel displacement field which includes the undetermined integral terms and the parabolic function is used in terms of thickness coordinate to represent the effect of transverse shear deformation. The governing equilibrium equations are drawn from the dynamic version of the principle of virtual work; whereas the solution of the problem is obtained by assuming a Navier technique for simply supported advanced composite beams subjected to sinusoidally and uniformly distributed loads. The correctness of the present computational method is checked by comparing the obtained numerical results with quasi-3D solutions found in the literature and with those provided by other shear deformation beam theories. It can be confirmed that the proposed model, which does not involve any shear correction factor, is not only accurate but also simple and useful in solving the static and dynamic response of advanced composite beams.

  • In this work we introduce a higher-order hyperbolic shear deformation model for bending and frees vibration analysis of functionally graded beams. In this theory and by making a further supposition, the axial displacement accounts for a refined hyperbolic distribution, and the transverse shear stress satisfies the traction-free boundary conditions on the beam boundary surfaces, so no need of any shear correction factors (SCFs). The material properties are continuously varied through the beam thickness by the power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. Based on the present refined hyperbolic shear deformation beam model, the governing equations of motion are obtained from the Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions for simply-supported beams are developed to solve the problem. To verify the precision and validity of the present theory some numerical results are compared with the existing ones in the literature and a good agreement is showed.
