In this paper, we proposed a new method for the determination of strategies that are required in a continuous optimization algorithm based on the fictitious play theory. In order to apply the fictitious play theory to continuous optimization problems, it is necessary to express continuous values of a variable in terms of discrete strategies. In this paper, we proposed a method in which all strategies contain an equal number of selected real values that are sorted in their magnitudes. For comparative analysis of the characteristics and performance of the proposed method of representing strategies with respect to the conventional method, we applied the method to the two types of benchmarking functions: separable and inseparable functions. From the experimental results, we can infer that, in the case of the separable functions, the proposed method not only outperforms but is more stable. In the case of inseparable functions, on the contrary, the performance of the optimization depends on the benchmarking functions. In particular, there is a rather strong correlation between the performance and stability regardless of the benchmarking functions.

The CUPID code was developed and is continuously updated in KAERI. Verification and validation (V&V) is mainly done for light water reactors (LWRs). This paper describes a benchmarking of the detailed mesh level compared with sub-channel level for application to pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs), even though component scale comparison for the PHWR moderator system was done once before. We completed a sub-channel level comparison between the CUPID code and the ASSERT code and a CUPID code analysis. Because the ASSERT code has already been validated with numerous experiments, benchmarking with the ASSERT code will offer us more trust on the CUPID code. The target channel has high power and thus high pressure deformation. The high power channel tends to have a high possibility of critical heat flux (CHF), because a high void fraction and quality in channel exit region appear. In this research, after determining the reference grid and T/H model, we compared the sub-channel level results of the CUPID code with those of the ASSERT code.

Benchmarking is an effective tool supporting improvement of corporate competitiveness and development of management strategy, however, its effectiveness may be compromised if its target and approach are not appropriate. Notably, the construction industry of Korea is unique in that it has a number of competitors sharing the same category and is significantly exposed to changes in external environment in terms of legal, regulatory and policy frameworks. Such characteristics make target corporate category rather than single company more suitable as benchmarking target and necessitate analysis of external environment. This study intends to analyze the characteristics of construction industry in Korea and conditions of domestic companies in order to propose a benchmarking process for construction industry differentiated from conventional ones.학교 건축공학과, 산학협력기술연구원;경희대학교 대학원;경희대학교 대학원;

Strategic planning is an essential function of senior management in any business firm. Planning involves the firm's behavior in an competitive market and adaptation of the company's resources towards the selected market strategy. This study presents a methodological procedure for strategic planning in global top-tier construction firms. This procedure consists of the following stages. First, analyzed growth of revenue in which weight of total construction firms' revenue shown in Global Top 225 Contractors(ENR). Second, analyzed specialty of construction products. The products are General Building, Power, Water Supply, Industrial/Petroleum Process, and Transportation. Third, analyzed business the portfolio plan. The business portfolio plan includes both local/overseas market and specification/diversification of construction products. It affects the subsequent choice of a benchmarking for development of each construction company. The choice of the benchmarking firm, among several available alternatives, should follow a careful analysis of the characteristics and benefits inherent in the implementation of each.

This study applied DEA analysis to measure the relative efficiency of 35 companies that produce automobile body components. First, the input and output, the improvement target value of the calculated variables, and the reference group for benchmarking for inefficient groups to become efficient groups were established through DEA analysis. In addition, whether inefficiency was due to technical inefficiency or size was analyzed in connection with the cases of the actual companies through the measurement of scale efficiency. Second, a route for efficiency improvement was derived through DEA-Tier analysis by defining the possible group for benchmarking in actuality within the production industry of automobile body components where the primary cooperative company belonged. Third, the financial variables that generate the difference between efficient and inefficient groups were derived through logistic regression analysis. Financial strategies that determine the direction the indices should be improved to allow the inefficient group to become an efficient one were recommended. This research is expected to provide diagnostic methods for management efficiency and the direction of improvement to enhance the management efficiency of automotive parts makers by identifying the causes of the inefficiency of domestic automotive parts makers empirically. The study also provides financial strategies together with the target values of efficiency improvement for each individual company.
This study was performed to suggest a new efficiency measurement indicator is necessary for evaluating management efficiency of food service operations in contract-managed foodservice companies, to distinguish efficient food service providers and inefficient ones by measuring comparative efficiency among food service operations, and to provide guidance for effective management through showing benchmarking targets for improving inefficient food service providers. The subjects of this study were the 93 B&I foodservice Operations of a domestic contract food service company. The analysis was conducted using CCR model in DEA model. A software, 'Frontier analyst', was used for the analysis. Based on the results derived from comparison of efficiency evaluation classified by providers with use of DEA, it was possible to identify efficient food providers and inefficient providers, and subsequently provide benchmarking guidelines for improvement of the inefficient groups. In analyzing the differences between the results of DEA efficiency evaluation by detailed operation status of food service providers, there was significant difference of efficiency outcomes in terms of contract types, while there was no significant difference in terms of business condition.

The amount of financial information in today's sophisticated large data bases is huge and makes comparisons between company performance difficult or at least very time consuming. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether neural networks in the form of self-organizing maps can be used to manage the complexity in large data bases. This paper structures and analyzes accounting numbers in a large data base over several time periods. By using self-organizing maps, we overcome the problems associated with finding the appropriate underlying distribution and the functional form of the underlying data in the structuring task that is often encountered, for example, when using cluster analysis. The method chosen also offers a way of visualizing the results. The data base in this study consists of annual reports of more than 80 Korean companies with data from the year 1998.
This paper extends the empirical analysis on R&D based growth model so that the nonstationary panel unit root testing methods can be used to distinguish the exogenous growth model and R&D based growth model for the 1981-1999 period with fourteen OECD economies including Korea. Our results show that first, using U.S. and Group mean as benchmarking, the stochastic R&D productivity convergence to benchmarking is not supported in our data set. Second, the empirical results for stochastic nonconvergence to the U.S. or group mean also are robustness to panel unit root methods. We, therefore, find strong support for the implications for R&D based growth model.

Capital project benchmarking requires an effective cost normalization process to compare cost performance of projects accomplished in different time and location. Existing cost normalization approaches have been established based on the assumption that all required information for cost normalization is fully identified once a project is completed. Cost normalization, however, is sometimes required to evaluate phase-level outcomes of an ongoing project where the required information is not fully available. This paper aims to provide a cost normalization procedure for phase-based performance assessment. The procedure consists of three normalization steps: currency conversion, location adjustment, and time adjustment considering various scenarios where the required information is not fully identified. This paper also presents how the cost normalization procedure has been applied to the 10-10 Performance Assessment Program, which is a phase-based performance assessment system developed by the Construction Industry Institute (CII). Both researchers and industrial professionals can apply the cost normalization procedure to studies and practices regarding to cost estimation, feasibility analysis, and performance assessment.

This study aims to implement an empirical research about the efficiency of container Ports, and to suggest an effective strategy which can operate container Ports more well. This paper presents a new approach to the measurement of efficiency. Data envelopment analysis(DEA), as it is called, has particular applicability in the service sector. This study applies DEA to provide an efficiency measurement for fifty three container ports including Pusan Port. As a result, we suggest several ideas that can improve the efficiency of container terminals. They are as follows. Firstly, we discriminate between efficient and inefficient container ports and then present a method that can move to efficiency container terminal and a benchmarking port. Secondly, we evaluate the efficiency of Pusan port, and grasp the position at the present time, suggest an advanced direction in future.
