  • A comparison between theoretical and measured transfer function, which relates structure-borne noise source level to underwater radiated noise, of a naval ship is presented in this study. Transfer functions are obtained by dividing far field underwater noise by the value of structure borne noise source levels below machinery mounts. In prediction, statistical energy analysis of the whole ship structure is used to get vibration levels of wetted hull plates below water line. Then, far field radiated noise is calculated by summing up contributions from each plates using vibration levels and radiation efficiencies. And 1/3-octave band underwater sound pressure at the distance of 1 m away from the hull were measured to get experimental transfer functions. The two transfer functions are compared to show resonable agreements in spite of the subtle physical differences between each other.

  • The characteristics of liquefied butane spray are expected to be different from conventional diesel fuel spray, because a kind of flash boiling spray is expected when the back pressure is below the saturated vapor pressure of the butane(0.23MPa at 298K). The ambient pressure was held at a pressure above(0.37MPa) and below(0.15MPa) the fuel vapor pressure. The axial velocities, radial velocities, and size distributions in butane sprays were measured with PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) system. The PDPA measurement showed a smaller SMD at the 0.15MPa chamber pressure, compared to the 0.37MPa case. Log-hyperbolic density function for the droplets size distribution can be fitted to the experimental results of a liquefied butane spray.

  • In this paper we propose a region-adaptive CELP image coder for still images at low bit rates below 0.5 bpp. The proposed method partitions the image into stochastically similar regions by the minimum spanning tree method and finds prediction coefficients for each region using a 2- dimensional linear prediction model. Coding is carried out on 8$\times$8 blocks and when there are several regions included in a block, an image is synthesized using the prediction coefficients of each region. Computer simulation results show that the proposed method allows improved synthesized image over conventional block-adaptive CELP methods, especially at edges. In addition, performance comparison with the JPEG DCT method shows that while the JPEG method shows block distortion and staircase effects (ragged edges) at bit rates below 0.5 bpp, the proposed CELP method shows improved synthesized images with such effects reduced.

  • The introduction of molecular biology methodologies to plant improvement programs offers an invaluable opportunity for extensive germplasm characterization. We have applied the developed technique of random amplification of polymorphic DNA(RAPD)to the analysis of evaluating genetic diversity among Korean wild Codonopsis lanceolata. A total of 340 polymorpic hands were gernerated on agarose- and polyacrylamide-gel by 19 primers of abitrary sequence. grouped by cluster analysis using sample matching coefficients of similarity. Among of the samples. the minimum genetic distance value was obtained between sample no. 1(Girisan) and no. 2(Girisan), and the largest value between sample no. 11(Sulaksan) and no. 17(Sulaksan).In separate cluster dendrograms based on agareose - and polyacryamide-gel. some differences were observed; In the case of agarose gel,41 samples could be devided into 7 groups at below about 0.44 level of distance. However they were divided into 6 gourps at below about 0.40 level of distance in the case of polyacrylamide gel. These results showed that polymophic data in agrose were not grouped to wild plant selected from each mountainous district except for wild plants selected from Sulaksan and Chiaksan. We believe that polyacrylamide-RAPD is a superior method for detecting DNA polymorphism compared to agarose-RAPD method.

  • Ginseng seeds were gathered from 3,4,5 and 6 years of age and were classified into four qroups (below 4mm, 4∼5mm, 5∼6mm and above 6mm in across sieve). They were sown in seedling bed and some characters were investigated in each qroup of seed size. 1. The distribution of seed size of below 4mm, 4-5mm, 5-6mm and 6mm were 23.7%, 60.8%, 12.4% and 4.5%, respectively. 2. The ratio of seed coat dehiscence was not affected by seed size but emergence ratio and emerging vigor were superior in large seed. 3. The large seed showed superiority in stem length, stem diameter, leat and also in root length, root diameter and root weight. but diseased root was not affected by seed size. The effect of age(seed harvest) was not significant on all those characters.

  • In this experiment, germination test of ginseng seed and growth test of two year old ginseng in soil incorporated with quinclorac (3,7-Dichloro-8-quinoline carboxylic acid) were conducted to evaluate phytotoxicity caused by quinclorac residue in soil. Ginseng seed germiilation was hardly affected, but growth of ginseng seedling was retarded by quinclorac. The phytotoxicity of quinclorac on ginseng seedling was expressed at the lowest level tested, 3.75 g a.i./10a (118 of recommended rate for rice cultivation). The representative phytotoxicity in ginseng were decreased root weight, shortened leaf width and leaf length, and weak lateral root Quinclorac residue decreased by 1/4 in pot soil after 2 months and below 2 ppm in the paddy soil applied at usual rate (30 g a.i./10a) after 1∼ 2 years. Below 2 ppd ginseng did not show any phytotoxicity symptom.

  • In order to clarify effect of transplanting angle of seedling on shape and growth of ginseng root, ginseng of seedlings were transplanted with $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ respectively, and the root characters of 2-, 4- and 6-year-old ginseng were investigated. The length of main root with 45$^{\circ}$was above 7 cm (standard) but that of $60^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ was below 7 cm (standard). Number of good lateral root was above 2.3 ea for $45^{\circ}$, 0~$30^{\circ}$, but below 2.3 ea per plant for 60~$90^{\circ}$ respectively. Root fresh weight with $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ was heavier than that with $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$. Root disease infection rate was highest with $0^{\circ}$. There were, no significant difference in stem length, stem diameter, leaf area, comber of palmate leaves and leaflets per plant, ratio of missing plant, root diameter in 2-, 4- and 6-year-old ginseng.

  • This experiment was hocused on the improvement of postharvest management of fresh shiitake to increase the marketing duration. the respiration rate of fresh shiitake at 2$0^{\circ}C$ was ranged from 395mg to 551mg CO2/kg/hr depending on the cultural condition. The rapid precooling is considered as one of the most important postharsvest management to remain shiitake quality. The optimum temperature for precooling and storage was -3$^{\circ}C$ because the occurrence of physical damage on frozen tissue at below -5$^{\circ}C$. Frozen storage at -3$^{\circ}C$ had benefits to minimize weight loss, browning induction at gill tissue and consumption of stored materials where as storage at $0^{\circ}C$ appeared not to be adequite for the extension of marking duration. Frozen shiitake was succesefully thawed when exposed to RH 40-50% at below 1$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Upper extremity replantation is relatively less commonly performed than finger or hand replantation. We have experienced one case of forearm replantation and one case of upper arm replantation. After the replantation, limb volume at the biceps brachii muscle level below the replantation level appeared to be appropriate, however, the motor function of the muscles and the sensitivity were disappointing. For replantation of forearm and upper arm, restoration of the motor function and sensitivity of the extremity below the amputation level as well as the morphologic reconstruction have to be considered.

  • A Markovian stochastic model for a system subject to random shocks is considered. Each shock arriving according to a Poisson process decreases the state of the system by a random amount. A repairman arrives at the system periodically for inspection and repairs the system only if the state is below a threshold. Costs are assigned to each inspection of the repairman, to each repair, and to the system being in bad states below the threshold. The expected long run average cost is obtained and compared with that of the random inspection introduced by Lee and Lee(1994).
