  • The aim of this study was to obtain the basic data on the fish school behavior change to approaching vessel and fish species identification by means of their swimming speed. The surveys were carried out for the juvenile southern blue fin tuna and other fish schools off Esperance, western Australia from January to March 1999. We observed changes of fish school behavior in response to the approaching vessel using 360-degree scanning sonar. The results showed that, a horizontal direction index used to quantify a change of fish school behavior did not identify dependence of a radial distance and a swimming speed. A MannWhitney test conducted using the horizontal swimming speed of both species identified by sonar specialists, did not reveal a significant difference.

  • Several tests of the Double Cantilever Beam(DCB) were carried out for influence of the fiber orientation on the Mode I of the interlaminar fracture behavior in the Carbon/Epoxy composites. The interlaminar fracture toughness of Mode I was estimated based on the energy release rate of Mode I, $G_{I}$. The fracture toughness at crack initiation, $G_{IC}$, increases from type A to type E. The fracture toughness, $G_{IR}$ , is almost constant macroscopically for type A and type E when crack propagates. $G_{IR}$ for types B, C, D increases rapidly at the beginning of the crack growth then it decreases gradually. The fracture surface observation by SEM was also obtained the same results. Consequently the influence of the fiber orientation on the Mode I Interlaminar fracture behavior was made clear.ear.

  • We aimed to assess the behavior characteristics of fish on an artificial reef using hydroacoustic techniques. The acoustical survey was conducted with a 200 kHz dual beam transducer while fishing on the stone combination reef of Uljin. A school of fish were detected on the artificial reef before sunset and floated on the artificial reef at 30 minutes after sunset. The density (Nautical Area Scattering Coefficient, NASC) of fish that floated on the artificial reef after sunset was about $600m^2/nmi^2$; similar observations (about $50m^2/nmi^2$ or less) were noted after 19:00 hours. Fish caught by fishing on the artificial reef were Sebastes schlegeli, Hexagrammos otakii, Sebastes thompsoni, and Conger myriaster. Resultantly, we demonstrated that hydroacoustic techniques are useful for detecting behavior characteristics of fish in the artificial reef. Such results can be used for basic data to estimate the install effect of the artificial reefs.

  • The compaction and sintering behavior of zirconium titanate $(ZrTiO_4)$ was investigated by means of the measurement of sintering density and shrinkage, and the observation of microstructure. With increasing the content of $Al_2O_3$ additive, $Al_2O_3$-modified zirconium titanate samples fired at $1300^{\circ}C$ showed the anisotropic shrinkage behavior that the upper region of sintered body has higher sintering shrinkage than the low region. This difference of sintering shrinkage decreased with increasing firing temperature from 1300 to $1400^{\circ}C$. The SEM micrographs of powder compation show that the anisotropic shrinkage behavior is related with non-uniform density in a uniaxial compaction.
