Assessment of a Questionnaire for Breast Cancer Case-Control Studies

  • The aim of the present study was to assess criterion validity and external reliability of a questionnaire on risk factors for breast cancer. Materials and Methods. Women with breast cancer diagnosis (the cases) (N=40) and matched individuals without cancer (the controls) (N=40) were asked to fill in a questionnaire twice: on a day of admission to hospital (Q1) and on a day before discharge (Q2), with a time interval of 4-6 days. The questionnaire included questions (N=150) on demographic and socioeconomic factors, diseases in the past, family history of cancer, woman's health, smoking, alcohol use, diet, physical activity, and work environment. Criterion validity of the questionnaire Q2 relative to reference questionnaire Q1 was assessed with the Spearman correlation coefficient (SCC); external reliability of the questionnaire was measured in terms of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 16. Results. The responses to most of the questions on socioeconomic factors, family history on cancer, female health, lifestyle risk factors (smoking, alcohol use, physical activity) correlated substantially in both the cases and the controls with SCC and ICC>0.7 (p<0.01). Statistically non significant relationships defined only between the responses on amount of beer the cases drank at the ages up to 25 years and 26-35 years as well as time of use of estrogen and estrogens-progestin during menopause by the cases. Moderate and substantial SCC and ICC were determined for different food items. Only the response of the cases on veal consumption did not correlate significantly. Conclusions. The questionnaire on breast cancer risk factors is valid and reliable for most of the questions included.

  • 제품을 생산하고 공급하는데 소요되는 주문리드타임과 달리 주문이 처리되는데 소요되는데 지연되는 것을 정보리드타임이라고 하는데, 이는 공급체인에서 개별기업들이 수요예측의 변동폭을 높이게 되며 이것이 바로 비용 상승요인으로 작용하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 직렬형 가치사슬에서 정보리드타임이 공급체인 시스템에 주는 영향을 알아본다. 특별히, MIT 시뮬레이션 모형을 동해서 실험을 수행하며, 아래와 같은 두 가지의 이슈를 다룬다. 첫째는 비용-이익 관점에서 물류 리드타임보다 정보리드타임의 개선이 효과적인가\ulcorner 둘째는 정보리드타임이 고객에게 보다 인접한 기업(downstream)이 고객하고 떨어져 있는 기업(upstream)보다 비용을 크게 상승시키고 있는지에 대한 물음이다. 사례 분석에서는 공급체인상의 개변기업들이 갖는 정보리드타임의 중요성을 지적하고, 개별기업간의 정보리드타임의 차이 분석을 통해서 고객의 수요와 요구를 직접 받는 기업에서 정보리드타임의 중요성이 큼을 인증하고 있다.

Intake and performance of lambs finished in feedlot with wet brewer's grains

  • Background: The use of agroindustrial by-products in ruminant nutrition to be an interesting alternative in order to reduce production costs and environmental impacts arising from the inadequate destination of residues. The initial step of beer production yields a large volume of wet brewer's grains all year around, which is available at a low cost and has a high nutritional quality, and hence a big potential for animal production. Methods: Twenty-four Suffolk non-castrated male lambs, from simple parturition were kept in individual spots and allocated to four treatments constituted by four levels of substitution of sorghum silage by WBG (i.e.0; 33.5; 66.5 and 100% of substitution). It was used roughage: concentrate rate of 50:50, based on dry matter. Results: The ether extract intake increased while the acid detergent fiber intake decreased linearly ($P{\leq}0.05$). Substituion of sorghum silage by WBG did not change lambs' feed DMI, daily weight gain and feed conversion. Conclusion: The substitution of sorghum silage by WBG as roughage showed to be a viable alternative from the productive and economic point of view for finishing of feedlot lambs.

  • 우리나라의 산간지방(山間地方)에 야생(野生)하는 머루중(中)의 anthocyanin의 구조(構造)를 확인(確認)하였다. 머루에서 0.5% HCl methanol로 추출(抽出)하여 얻은 색소(色素) 추출액(抽出液)을 Amberlite IRC-50 이온 교환수지관(交換樹脂管)을 통과(通過)시켜 정제(精製)하고, Paper chromatography에 의하여 개별색소(個別色素)를 분리(分離)하였다. 각(各) 개별색소(個別色素)에 대하여 부분(部分) 산가수분해(酸加水分解), 결합당(結合糖)의 확인시험(確認試驗), aglycone의 alkali 분해(分解), paper chromatography에서 얻어진 $R_f$치(値), 가시부(可視部)에서의 흡수(吸收) spectra 측정(測定) 등에 의하여 구조(構造)를 확인(確認)하였다. 확인(確認)된 머루중(中)의 7가지 색소(色素)는 delphinidin 3-monoglucoside, petunidin 3-monoglucoside, cyanidin 3-monoglucoside, delphinidin 3,5-diglucoside, malvidin 3-monoglucoside, petunidin 3,5-diglucoside 및 malvidin 3,5-diglucoside 이었으며 cyanidin 3,5-diglucoside로 추측되는 색소(色素) 4-b는 확인(確認)되지 못하였다.

일부 여자대학생들의 음주실태와 관련요인 (A Survey on Drinking Status and Related Factors of Female Students in Women's University in Seoul)

  • In order to find associated factors with alcohol drinking among female students, a survey was conducted of 1,073 female students of a women's university in Seoul from the 22nd of May to the 18th of June, 1995. The major results were as follows: 1. Among 1,073 respondents, 13.8% of them were regular drinkers, 71.8% of them were social drinkers. the alcohol drinking rate of female students had significantly different depending on their field of study. The time of their first drind varied: 2. 14.8% in junior nigh school, 30.2% in high school, 4.7% after high school, and 49.4% in college. 3. The major motivation to start drinking was 'social meeting' (45.4%), 'curiosity' (12.6%), and 'releasing stress' (5.5%). 4. The favorite alcohol of drinkers was beer (62.2%), Soju (25.6%), whisky (1.4%), Makkori (0.2%). 5. The frequency of alcohol drinking was 36.5% once a week, 32.8% 2~3 times per month. 15.7% more than twice a week and 8.4% once a month. 6. Among the respondents, 73.4% of them wanted a health education program about drinking. 7. The drinking of the father, mother, brother, sister, boy friend, girl friend had a statistically significant relation with the drinking of the respondents. 8. Meal regularity, balanced diet, smoking, and knowledge of alcohol drinking had a statistically significant relation with the drinking of the respondents. 9. A multiple logistic regression analysis showed that related factors for alcohol drinking were the following: health status, balanced diet, father's drinking, sister's drinking, boy friend's drinking, and smoking.

커피전문점 교대근로자의 건강관련요인과 영양상태 조사 - 서울지역 20대 미혼여성을 중심으로 - (Health-related Factors and Nutritional Status in Shift-workers at Coffee Shops - Focused on Single Women in Twenties in Seoul -)

  • This study examined the health-related factors and nutritional status of 89 single women workers in their 20's who work night and day shift at the take-out coffee shops and the 89 single women office workers. The results of the study are summarized as follows: The shift-workers showed lower rate of office tenure (p < 0.001), income (p < 0.001), job satisfaction (p < 0.05), weight (p < 0.05), and higher rate of weight change (p < 0.001) than the non shift-workers. The shift-workers showed lower rate of of exercise (p < 0.001), sleeping hours (p < 0.01), and good health condition (p < 0.01), and higher rates of smoking (p < 0.001), presence of disease (p < 0.001), gastric and intestinal illnesses (p < 0.001) than the non shift-workers. More than 88.8% of the shift workers answered that they ate alone (p < 0.001). The shift workers showed lower rate of regularity of meal (p < 0.001), balanced diet (p < 0.001), and mealtime (p < 0.001), and higher rate of skipping breakfast (p < 0.001), consumption of salty and spicy food (p < 0.001), and overeating (p < 0.01) than the non shift-workers. The shift workers consumed (p < 0.001) less frequently rice, soup and side dishes, and more frequently noodles and snack, bread than the non-shift-workers. The shift workers showed lower rate of consumption of beer (p < 0.01), and higher rate of consumption of coffee (p < 0.001), tea (p < 0.01) and soju (p < 0.001) in once a week or more intakes than the non-shift-workers. The shift workers showed higher rate of consumption of carbohydrates (p < 0.05), and calcium (p < 0.05) and lower rate of consumption of protein (p < 0.05), fiber (p < 0.05), vitamin C (p < 0.05), and folate (p < 0.05) intakes than the non-shift-workers.

Exposure to Ethyl Carbamate by Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages Imported in Korea

  • Determination of ethyl carbamate content in imported alcoholic beverages in Korea and an exposure assessment were conducted. In gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/selected ion monitoring (GC/MS/SIM) analysis, 2.5-39, 8-263, 6.3-112, 11.3-23.5, 53-94, 8.5-38.5, 7-9.5, 21.3-31.5, 5-832.5, and $10.5-364.8\;{\mu}g/L$ of ethyl carbamate were detected in imported beers, sakes, whiskies, vodkas, Chinese liquors, cognacs, tequilas, rums, liqueurs, and wines, respectively. The exposure assessment indicated that the exposure of Korean adults to ethyl carbamate were lower than 20 ng/kg BW per day, (the virtual safe dose) indicating that the amount of ethyl carbamate exposed through fermented food and alcoholic beverages including imported products are currently in the 'no significant risk level'. However, the present low exposure to ethyl carbamate through the imported alcoholic products was not due to the low contents of ethyl carbamate in imported products, but low consumption of the imported products. Therefore, given increasing importation of alcoholic beverages in Korea, reductions of ethyl carbamate content in imported alcoholic beverages, especially non-distilled products, should be required by regulating limits on the ethyl carbamate content in the imported alcoholic beverages.

Ethanol and Methanol Concentration in Commonly Used Brands of Ma-al-shaeer in Iran: Estimation of Dietary Intakes and Risk Assessment

  • Objectives: Ma-al-shaeer is a popular beverage in Islamic countries. The aim of this study was to determine the concentrations of methanol and ethanol in most consumed brands of Ma-al-shaeer in Iran. Methods: Eighty-one Ma-al-shaeer samples which commonly used in Iran were provided. Methanol and ethanol contents were determined by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector. Results: The mean methanol concentrations in Iranian and foreign brands was $129.84{\pm}205.38mg/L$ and $110.157{\pm}135.98mg/L$, respectively. Although mean ethanol contents of Iranian brands was $1.2{\pm}2.41mg/L$, ethanol level in foreign ones was lower than LOQ. Conclusion: Since the most Ma-al-shaeer brands had methanol pollution at different levels establishment of a definitive relationship between the methanol content and toxicological effects seem to be vital. EDI of methanol for Iranian people through consumption of Maal-shaeer was determined 0.023mg/kg bw/day.

빛의 세기, 투과거리 및 세포농도에 따른 미세조류의 광합성 활성 모델링 (Modeling of Microalgal Photosynthetic Activity Depending on Light Intensity, Light Pathlength and Cell Density)

  • 본 연구에서는 미세조류의 배양액을 통한 빛의 전달특성을 수식적으로 표현하고 이를 바탕으로 광합성 활성을 예측할 수 있는 수학적 모델을 구축하였다. 먼저 미세조류의 배양액에서의 빛의 거동은 Beer-Lambert 식으로서 개략적으로 표현할 수 있었다. 미세조류의 광합성을 산소생산속도로서 나타낸 결과 미세조류의 농도가 높은 경우 낮은 농도에 비하면 단위 부피당 활성은 크게 나타난 반면 단위 건조중량당 활성은 오히려 낮게 나타났다. 이렇게 운전조건에 의존적인 광반응곡선을 예측하기 위하여 국부적인 광합성 활성을 가정하고 이를 전체부피에 대하여 평균하는 방버으로 수학적인 모델을 구축하였다. 또한 실험결과를 이용하여 고유 매개변수를 추정하였으며 예측치와 실험치를 비교한 결과 우수한 일치성을 확인하였다. 모델을 이용하여 광합성 활성에 크게 영향을 미치는 빛의 세기, 세포농도 및 빛의 투과특성과 같은 주요 운전조건에 대하여 그 영향을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 빛의 세기가 강할수록 광합성 활성은 증가하지만 광합성효율은 감소하는 경향을 확인할 수 있었다. 미세조류의 세포농도의 경우 단위 부피당 산소생산속도를 위한 최적의 농도가 존재함을 알 수 있었으며 이는 조사되는 빛의 세기에 따라 변화하였다. 빛의 투과거리가 짧을수록 광합성 효율은 증가하지만 충분히 강한 빛이 공급될 경우에는 일정한 투과거리까지는 최고치를 유지하였다. 결론적으로 광생물반응기의 성능을 예측하고 최적조건을 결정하는데 제시된 모델이 유용하게 사용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다

Development of Light Transmission Fluctuation for Particle Measurement in Solid-Gas Two Phase Flows

  • In order to realize In-line and convenient measurement for solid-gas two phase flows, Light Transmission Fluctuation (LTF) based on the random variation of transmitted light intensity, light scattering theory and cross-correlation method was presented for online measurement of particle size, concentration and velocity. The statistical relationship among transmitted light intensity, particle size and particle number in measurement zone was described by Beer-Lambert Law. Accordingly, the particle size and concentration were determined from the fluctuation signal of transmitted light intensity. Simultaneously, the particle velocity was calculated by cross-correlation analysis of two neighboring light beams. By considering the influence of concentration variation in industrial applications, the improved algorithm based on spectral analysis of transmitted light intensity was proposed to improve measurement accuracy and stability. Therefore, the online measurement system based on LTF was developed and applied to measure pulverized coal in power station and raw material in cement plant. The particle size, concentration and velocity of powder were monitored in real-time. It can provide important references for optimal control, energy saving and emission reduction of energy-intensive industries.
