The global fashion industry produces significant carbon emission and micro-plastics in oceans. Studies on sustainable design methods as such environmental issues in fashion are becoming intensely problematic. This study conducted a case study on 100 upcycle fashion brands to propose strategical upcycle fashion designs to compete in a sustainable fashion market. A literature review indicated that 3 types of textile wastes are generated as upcycling materials: post-producer, pre-consumer and post-consumer. Wastes are categorized together with 3 types of techniques: redesigning, reconstruction and handcrafting. This research derived 7 types of upcycle fashion designs that have the following features: to make luxury upcycle fashion products, to make sustainable grunge looks, to re-evaluate deadstocks, to recover vintage clothes, to convert waste into craft-arts, to offer solutions for damaged products, and to make zero-waste small fabric waste. The study results show that key drivers in the upcycle fashion design are the redesignability of materials and technique-related costs. This study implies that adopting appropriate design features can be a useful strategy for designers. New technologies will solve current problems and encourage them to design products in a new circular value system.
The media culture influences upon young people while introducing new cultures by every hour. Considering the mainstream culture, in which media has the greatest effect on young people, this article examines the symbolic significances of youth fashion through media culture. The results of this study can be summarized as the following: First, young people's popular culture ("pop culture") is becoming the medium that leads to the creation of similar cultures of the young people globally through various routes. Culture is being created by integration of diverse media, and not by what is seen through a single medium. Typical young people's culture, which is formed due to the influence of media culture, includes community culture, pun culture, virtual culture and fandom culture. Second, in order to examine youth fashion that is seen in those media, the survey has been conducted on media stars, tecktonik dance groups, fashion models, avatars and online communities, which are fashion icons influencing young people. Third, youth fashion, which has been formed centering on media culture, has the flexible property that varies the symbolic significance according to which culture becomes the main axis. The symbolic significance in fashion, which is seen on media culture young people are contacting, has been examined in the aspects of value orientation, diversity orientation, speed orientation and digital orientation.
Given the fashion customer needs that are getting more complicated and diverse recently, differentiation is required more than ever even from the trend-planning phase where design concept for the forthcoming season is determined. Even though value of information in fashion industry is becoming more critical than any other time in the past, local fashion industry has yet to be approached academically. Therefore, this study attempted to identify the as-is status of local fashion information industry and analyzed duplication and differentiation of information provided by fashion information providers to suggest a roadmap for evolution of the fashion information industry of Korea that is expected to become more active in the future. This research employed biblical study, industry interview, contents analysis and case study. We have studied evolution of local fashion information industry and various types of planning information services as described in the above and expect this study to provide useful references to as-is status of local fashion information industry, for further studies by others and selection of product planning information providers.
It will be very effective in studying fashion images that reflect society to investigate the process of the images of military uniforms becoming fashion with the images as the original or image changes in the military look in relation to The hyperreal of the Simulation phenomenon. The foundation of the study was set up by studying simulation and simulacra. Studying the simulation phenomenon in fashion was followed by explaining the aspects of simulacra and the hyperreal in image changes in fashion to study and analyze the simulation phenomenon of the military look based on the findings. The study examined the military look from the Industrial Age to modern times through simulation and the hyperreal in the military look of modern fashion through the changes of images that started with military uniforms. Those research efforts led to the following conclusions: Looking into fashion through the military look reveals that The hyperreal made its appearance in most cases with few cases of the 1st and 2nd simulacrum. And hyperreality was closely related to media in fashion under the influence of media. In short, fashion and copy are in an inseparable relation, and the hyperreality phenomenon has always been present in modern fashion.
This study explores if consumer perceptions about genuine luxury fashion merchandise are affected by the presence of counterfeits. A total of 504 consumers participated in an online survey. First, respondents were asked to indicate whether or not they agreed that counterfeits negatively affect genuine luxury fashion brands and to provide reasons for their responses. Approximately 57% replied that counterfeit goods negatively affect the image of genuine luxury fashion brand goods. The main reason mentioned was that counterfeit products damage the producer/copyright holder of genuine products, as well as the national economy; they believed that it damaged the genuine luxury brands' image due to the luxury goods becoming less rare; however, 43% of respondents stated that counterfeits did not negatively affect genuine luxury fashion brands. Thus, counterfeit availability reflects that a brand is renowned and popular in a market where consumers can recognize genuine luxury fashion products from counterfeits. Second, the respondents were asked about specific luxury fashion brands and indicated that seeing counterfeits did not negatively affect genuine luxury fashion brands' value, brand reputation or satisfaction of ownership. The majority of respondents disagreed that the availability of counterfeits negatively affects the value, reputation and satisfaction of owning original luxury brands.
This case study is centered on the developing process for the curriculum of fashion design major that is focused on the concept of competency, which is becoming increasingly more important in universities. The purpose of this study is to develop a competency-oriented curriculum for fashion design majors based on recent social changes that accentuate the importance of competency in such programs. In order to establish a competency-oriented curriculum of the Department of Fashion Design, the researchers examined environmental trends within the fashion industry, the curriculum and major competencies of other universities were examined. As a result, the key ability types of the Department of Fashion Design at A University, a local private university, were determined to be: communication and consideration, creativity and convergence, digital fashion, and practical adaptability. Four major abilities were selected to develop competencies suitable for the aforementioned ability types. These abilities are design planning and development, creative and convergent thinking, integrated information search and utilization, and field expertise application. From there, the curriculum was organized with these four major abilities in mind, and curriculum completion plans were developed for each grade and semester according to the stage and level of contents for each subject. To ensure the validity of the curriculum, it is necessary to develop a back-flow system that demonstrates whether the targer competency has been acquired through a competence-based curriculum.
This study deals with the aesthetic characteristics in Gareth Pugh's fashion film. As fashion films are becoming a newly emerging communication tool in fashion, the aim of this study will be to build a database on these films. For the specific method in this work, literature reviews were performed along with the empirical study of seven pieces of fashion film. The results of the study showed that Gareth Pugh released the fashion films from 2008 to 2012, and he collaborated with SHOW Studio member and photographer Nick Knight and Ruth Hogben. Common themes in their films were fear, fantasy, dynamics, and going off-limits, and these can be summed up in the following ways. First, a sense of fear was expressed via black colors, bizarre mechanical sounds, decalcomania shape in abstract images, and transformed physical body images. Second, an image of fantasy was presented with diverse expression techniques including colorful light presentations and abstract image setups from repeatedly changed image reproduction. Third, dynamic feature was denoted with a combination of fast development of images and quick reproduced layouts, as well as quick beat sounds, and big and powerful action movements. Fourth, characteristic of going off-limits was reflected, by showing the collections with a communication tool called fashion film instead of existing collection concept.
The contribution of foreign tourist consumption on national economies is becoming increasingly important for many countries. This study examines the relationship of home-host country psychic distance (HHCPD), tourism shopping motivation and attitudes towards local and global fashion brands in host countries. Survey data from a sample of 500 Chinese tourists were collected at an international airport in Korea. The results reveal that all three key factors of HHCPD (economic, geographic and cultural distance) positively affect social shopping motivation. Moreover, only economic distance has a positive effect on commodity shopping motivation, while both cultural and economic distance positively influence souvenir shopping motivation. All three factors of tourism shopping motivation positively affect local fashion brand attitudes, while only commodity shopping motivation positively affects consumer attitudes towards global fashion brands. Thus, fashion marketers should trigger the shopping motivation of foreign tourists by maximising the psychic distance from their home in order to satisfy fashion-seeking tourists.

In a fast changing postmodern society, contemporary fashion is becoming more complicated and ambiguous along with other genres of art than ever before. This phenomenon reigning as a sociocultural paradigm can be defined as 'indeterminacy' and it means 'undecidability'. The purpose of this study is to clarify and analyze the indeterminate characteristics of contemporary fashion reviewing the theoretical background and the architectural formativeness as a comparative research. The core idea of deconstructivism dismantles a causal relationship between function and form in fashion and the conventional notion about clothes. Complexity theory, which is the study of chaotic dynamical systems, suggests the creative idea and concept of infinite possibilities on a formative method. Meanwhile, catastrophe theory of discontinuous change can be used as interpretative strategies for the process of deconstruction and reconstruction. As a result of this study, the indeterminacy of fashion can be analyzed into five semantic categories: irregularity, immateriality, randomness, complexity and changeability. The intrinsic value of the indeterminacy in contemporary fashion is the interaction with a sociocultural ideology and a technological environment as well as an expansion of formative expression. To conclude, it can be said that the indeterminacy in fashion is a new interpretation of the relationship among body and space, clothes and society.
