  • This paper analyzes films by director Tarsem Singh in relation to the theory of the sublime. The medium of film works in dimensions of both spectacle and narrative. Tarsem's strength mainly comes from spectacle. The visual style of Tarsem is unique and undeniably beautiful, but in a strange and magnificent way, rather than sweet and pleasant. If you accept the premises of Kant and Lyotard that the beautiful is a positive pleasure and the sublime is a negative pain, Tarsem's spectacle is certainly closer to the sublime than the beautiful. The Fall proves the director's ability in both spectacle and narrative. The spectacle of this film is so overwhelmingly huge, and vivid, it easily surpasses spectators' maximum capacity of imagination, which leaves the spectators in awe. Spectacle tends to hinder thinking thus obstruct the flow of narrative, but at the same time it blocks rational suspicion about the narrative. The spectacle of the Fall works as the power to immerse the spectators into the internal logic of the film. Since the spectators are deeply moved by the spectacle, they willingly follow the narrative of the film, the tragic adventure of the heroes which again gives the audience deep catharsis.

  • This study intends to evaluate visual preference and image for 10 types of forest sceneries which have own distinct characteristics without overlapping each other among 22 types of beautiful forest sceneries based on Korea National Parks. Z scale and paired comparison methods were used to analyze visual preference for forest scenery, and SD scale method was also adopted to assess visual image for forest scenery. Experiments were conducted with 3 different university students groups. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the evaluation results of Z scale (N=70) and paired comparison (N=64) methods show similar visual preference for different types of forest scenery. 'Scenery inside forests' and 'valley and rock' sceneries have the highest level of preference, and 'panorama of ridges', 'ridge of curious rock peaks', and 'waterfall and cliff' also have relatively higher preference level than others. However, 'community of dead trees' has the lowest preference in forest sceneries. Second, the factor analysis outputs of the image scores for beautiful forest scenery types by SD scale (N=66) show 3 factors of 'mysterious charm', 'colorful sense', and 'vividness/variety'. Examined the variables of forest scenery types for each factor, the image of 'mysterious charm' is based on the sceneries of mountain ridges, the image of 'colorful sense' is focused on the sceneries of color-expressed sense of the season, and the image of 'vividness/variety' is based on the sceneries of waterscape and curious rock peaks.

  • A pavilion is located in the place with beautiful scenery, which maximizes the poetical features of nature. So a scholar in the Chosun Dynasty had the dream of possessing it. This trends of the Chosun scholar resulted in producing lots of literary works related with the pavilion. In this thesis, I researched the characters of Pavilion Si-Jo in accordance with the function of pavilion. First, the pavilion, which is surrounded by the beautiful scenery, is a good place to see the beauty of nature. It is needless to walk around to see the scenery thanks to its open structure. So the feeling in the pavilion Si-Jo is distinguished from other sightseeing Si-Jos: those show the way of seeing the scenery walking here and there, but this shows the way of seeing the scenery only just looking up, looking down, and looking in the distance. Second, the pavilion functions as an academic place. In this case, it can be said that it functions like a lecture hall. It is more effective to study in the pavilion than in the closed structure, a lecture hall. Furthermore, the scholar studying in the pavilion understand the principle of nature with seeing the beautiful mountain and river, and it can be a place for growing a vast-flowing spirit. This kind of poetry has been handed down with the Chinese poetry, and the character who operated the pavilion often appears in the work. Third, the pavilion functions as a space for a fraternity or poetry circles. The poetic exchange was conducted by host of pavilion. which is the key ingredient for organizing a poetry circles. Finally, the pavilion functions as an entertainment. Although it is a space for an entertainment, there is no deviation as a man of novel birth. If the pavilion has the feature of closeness, there are sometimes works which shows the deviation of them.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the principles of Balletfit and its program structure and to establish Balletfit's effects on body shape change and postural correction. Interview, the most commonly used method of qualitative research, was chosen as the research method. Ten Balletfit class participants, who have attended private lessons twice per week, for three to six months period of time, were selected. These participants were chosen from participants of private lessons instead of group lessons for in-depth insights. The research was limited to a small group of participants and therefore, it is difficult to standardize the result. Also, because this study is based on the opinions of the participants, not by a posture measuring device, the accuracy of the result is limited as well. The followings are the conclusion of this research. First, the participation motive was either internet research or acquaintance's recommendation. Secondly, the effort to change the body shape. As mathematics evolves, many theorems had been developed beginning with geometric approaches. However, the algebraic techniques that survive these days are so powerful and generalized in school curriculum. So, if students have more chances to see mathematical properties in geometrical ways, they can experience how beautiful and meaningful they are through the process of the advent of them. Also, it was to try to develop an insight into their applications to other problems.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the meanings of water and water spaces in the Western architecture. The meaning of water is investigated by means of mythology and literature studies. It is found that water has ambivalent meanings, i.e. life and death, creation and destruction, chastity and sensuality. The meanings of water spaces in the Western architecture are dramatic, secret and dynamic, and represent publicity, verticality, formality in addition to desire for authority and realization(embodiment) of paradise. Water space is an essential component of beautiful and dynamic spaces and is used to revitalize dreary spaces.
