The enlargement of interest in base isolators as an earthquake-proof design strategy has dramatically accelerated experimental studies of elastomeric bearings worldwide. In this paper, a new base isolator concept that is a hybrid system of rubber bearings is proposed. Uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial shaking table tests are also performed to study the seismic behavior of a 0.4-scale three-story isolated steel structure in the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Taiwan. Experimental results demonstrate that structures with a hybrid system of rubber bearings composed of stirruped rubber bearings and laminated rubber bearings can actually decrease the seismic responses of the superstructure. It has been proved through the shaking table tests that the proposed hybrid system of rubber bearings is a very promising tool to enhance the seismic resistance of structures. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the proposed analytical model in this paper can predict the mechanical behavior of the hybrid system of rubber bearings and seismic responses of the base-isolated structures.
Recently, several attempts have been made to apply high Tc superconductor bearings of thrust type to flywheel energy storage system (FESS) throughout the world. Radial type superconductor bearings, however, have never been tried to the real FESS. KEPRI has developed its own radial type bearings and is now currently applying them to a FESS designed by KIMM, for the first time. In this paper preliminary test results of bearing performance and dynamic behavior of the flywheel rotor system mounted on them are presented. The dynamic properties, i.e, stiffness and damping, of the superconductor bearings were experimentally estimated using the static loading test as well as the impact test. The test revealed that stiffness value of the present superconductor bearings is about 67,700N/m and the damping value 29Ns/m. It was also found out that these bearings have some levitation drift problems due to excessive vibrations encountered while passing through the critical speeds. With recommend backup bearings to limit the vibration amplitudes of the rotor it is predicted that the flywheel rotor will show stable operations in the design speed range.
Recently, the development trend of turbomachinery is high capacity and high efficiency. Most of turbomachinery in the market are adopting ball bearings or air foil bearings. However, ball bearings have a limit for high speed product over $2.0{\times}10^6DN$(product of the inner diameter of the bearing in mm (D) and the maximum speed in rpm (N)). Air foil bearings have a limit for high axial load for high power products over 200~300 HP(horse power). Magnetic bearing is one of the solutions to overcome the limits of high speed and high axial load. Because magnetic bearings have no friction between the rotor and the bearings, they can reduce the load of the motor and make it possible to increase the rotating speed up to $5.0{\times}10^6DN$. Moreover, they can have high axial load capacity, because the axial load capacity of magnetic bearing depends on the capacity of the designed electromagnet. In this study, the radial and thrust magnetic bearings are designed to be applied to the 200 HP class turbo blower, and their performance was evaluated by the experiment. Based on the tests up to 26,400 rpm and 21,000 rpm under the no-load and load condition, respectively, it was verified that the magnetic bearings are stably support the rotor of the turbo blower.
The steady state performance of the counterrotating floating ring journal bearings is analyzed with isothermal finite bearing theory. The effect of counterrotating speed of the sleeve on the performance of the bearing is investigated. It is shown that counterrotating floating ring journal bearings can have considerable load capacity at the same counterrotating speeds, while conventional circular journal bearings with one fluid film cannot. Investigating the relationship between the frictional torques exerted on the ring due to the inner and outer films and the rotational speed of the ring, the stability of the equilibrium state is identified and the operating characteristics of the counterrotating floating ring journal bearing according to the method of acceleration or deceleration of the rotational speeds of the journal and sleeve are clarified. It is theoretically confirmed that floating ring journal bearings can be used in counterrotating journal-bearing system and become good substitutes for rolling bearings in counterrotating systems.

In this paper, the endurance life of the rolling bearings with defective balls and their failure (flaking) phenomena are presented. It was found that the lives of ball bearings with defective balls were shorter than that of calculated L10 life as well as that of normal bearings in spite of the using standard bearing components. Although the bearings were assembled with defective balls, whereas the other parts were qualified new ones, the main failures were occurred on the inner ring raceways. Moreover, the failures were on the center of the groove curvature and the severity of failure is similar to the order of initial defect depth of the balls. These shows that the defects on the bearings can affect the life of tribologically contacted mating parts.
This paper presents the dynamic analysis and experiment for rotor systems supported by angular contact ball bearings subjected to axial displacement preload. A dynamic software, which has been developed by the authors for the analysis of rotor systems supported by angular contact ball bearings, is used to simulate a uniform shaft system supported by two angular contact ball bearings with the axial displacement preload varied. Experiments are also performed to validate the simulation. An experimental system is constructed which consists of a uniform shaft, two bearings and a device for adjusting the axial displacement preload. Through a series of simulation and experiment, the dynamic characteristics of rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings subject to axial displacement preload are investigated.
Line type rigid bearings for Open-Steel-Plate-Girder railway bridges have several problem in service, and they are unstable structurally. Thus, spherical bearings having advanced maintenance capability and device to resistance up-lift are developed and replace the existing ones. A experiment of maintenance for a new placed spherical bearings under real Open-Steel-Plate-Girder bridge is conducted and their good maintenance performance is proved. The dynamic behavior of the bridge is measured and analyzed for the two cases of the existing and replacing bearings. Therefore, the effect of the new spherical bearings on the railway bridge is assessed.
The dymanic properties of the high-Tc superconductor journal bearings used in the KEPRI flywheel energy storage system was experimentally estimated by using the imbalance excitation method. The test reveals that the superconductor bearings have very low stiffness compared to that of typical oil film bearings with similar geometry and almost the same amount of damping as in roller bearings, which may not be helpful for the system to pass through the critical speeds. However, it was found out that the cross-coupled stiffness and damping terms were almost negligible so that the system could be more stable than the one using lil film bearings. Also with proper design of the rotor-bearing system and accurate balancing of the rotor, the high-Tc superconductor bearing is one of the most viable alternatives to the conventional ones due to its oil-free, non-contact running capability in a vacuum environment, which is literally essential for highly efficient flywheel energy storage systems.
High Damping Rubber bearings (HDR bearings) have been used in the seismic design of bridge structures widely in China. In earthquakes, structural natural periods will be extended, seismic energy will be dissipated by this kind of bearing. Previously, cyclic loading method was used mainly for test studies on mechanical properties of HDR bearings, which cannot simulate real seismic responses. In this paper, Real-Time Substructure (RTS) test study on mechanical properties of HDR bearings was conducted and it was found that the loading rate effect was not negligible. Then the influence of peak acceleration of ground motion was studied. At last test results were compared with a numerical simulation in the OpenSees software framework with the Kikuchi model. It is found that the Kikuchi model can simulate real mechanical properties of HDR bearings in earthquakes accurately.

Magnetic field in magnetic bearings is the physical medium to realize magnetic levitation, the distribution of the magnetic field determines the operating performance of magnetic bearings. In this paper, a thin-slice Fiber Bragg Grating-Giant Magnetostrictive Material magnetic sensor used for the air gap of magnetic bearings was proposed and tested in the condition of dynamic magnetic field. The static property of the sensor was calibrated and a polynomial curve was fitted to describe the performance of the sensor. Measurement of dynamic magnetic field with different frequencies in magnetic bearings was implemented. Comparing with the finite element simulations, the results showed the DC component of the magnetic field was detected by the sensor and error was less than 5.87%.
