  • Turbine journal bearings are designed to support the weight of the rotors on a hydrodynamic oil film and to provide dynamic stability to the rotor system. The life time of journal bearings is infinite theoretically because the journal bearings are separated from the shaft journal by oil film. But poor design, assembly, operation and maintenance can cause problems to the journal bearings. The FMEA(Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) results of the journal bearings show that frequent maintenance of the journal bearings can cause failures and reduction of the bearing life. Therefore, the maintenance periods and history of the journal bearings with the bearing FMEA results are reviewed in order to establish the optimized maintenance period of the journal bearing for the nuclear power plants. Consequently it is necessary to maintain a best condition of lubrication system, reject time-based maintenance and perform the condition-based maintenance of journal bearings in order to maintain optimum condition of the journal bearing.

  • Taking three types of bridge bearings with diameter being 100 mm as examples, the theoretical analysis, the experimental research as well as the numerical simulation of these bearings is conducted. Since the normal compression and shear machines cannot be applied to the small-size bearings, an improved equipment to test the properties of these bearings is proposed and fabricated. Besides, the simulation of the bearings is conducted based on the explicit finite element software ANSYS/LS-DYNA, and some parameters of the bearings are modified in the finite element model to reduce the computation cost effectively. Results show that all the research methods are capable of revealing the fundamental properties of the small-size bearings, and a combined use of these methods can better catch both the integral properties and the inner detailed mechanical behaviors of the bearings.

  • Water-lubricated frictional characteristics of a stainless steel ball bearings are not well known compared to the oil-lubricated frictional characteristics. Furthermore a study on friction at a high temperature is rare because the bearing maintenance strategy for water-lubricated or chemicals-lubricated bearings of equipment is generally based on the replacement of the failed bearings-and parts. Ball bearings and ball screw are installed in the power transmission for the newly developing integral reactor and these are lubricated with chemically-controlled pure water at a high temperature and a high pressure. Bearings and power transmitting mechanical elements for an atomic reactor requires high reliability and high performance during the estimated lifetime, and it should be verified. In this paper, experimental research results of the frictional characteristics for water-lubricated ball bearings are presented as a preliminary investigation.

  • Experimental work undertaken to investigate the behaviour of laminated elastomeric bridge bearings under compression and a combination of compression and shear or rotation has been reported on elsewhere. However, it is difficult to determine the state of stress within the bearings in terms of the applied forces or the interaction between the steel shims and the rubber layers in the bearings. In order to supply some of the missing information about the stress-strain state within the bearings, an analytical study using the finite element method was carried out. The available experimental results were used to validate the model after which the analyses were used to provide further information about the state of stress within the bearing.

  • In order to improve the load capacity of externally pressurized air-lubeicatedjournal bearings, a new type(doubly-stepped type) bearing was revised and experimented. Through the results of experiment, the load capacity of doubly-stepped bearings was discussed and compared with equivalent conventional circular journal bearings. Results were obtained for speed up to 18000rpm and for supply pressure ratio(Ps/Pa) 4.8,6,7. Compared with equivalent conventional bearings, doubly-stepped bearings resultd a high gain in load capacity. It is also shown that the increasing rate of load capacith increases with decreasing the eccentricity ratio. Furthermore, the increasing rate is higher in the case of great clearanceratio than small dleatance ratio of doubly-stepped bearings. Such an increase in load capacity is confirmed by pressure distributions in the bearings.

  • Wind turbine pitch/yaw bearings are relatively big and have different operating conditions like very heavy load to support compared with widely used industrial bearings. Once pitch/yaw bearings failed, according to their special surroundings, serious damages like higher repair costs and additional costs by stopped electricity generation are occur. Therefore, pitch/yaw bearings must be designed to have enough strength and fatigue life under actual operating conditions. In this study, with finite element analysis, it was investigated that stress distribution between rolling elements and raceway and comparatively analyzed using widely used guideline (NREL DG03). Design parameters of wind turbine pitch/yaw bearings are also analyzed, and it could be used as reference for the large bearing design field.

  • This paper describes how to identify standard numbers and to diagnose defects of the ball bearings. The first stage of the networks is a procedures for identifying standard numbers of the bearings, and the next stage carries out the diagnosis of defects on the outer race and the inner race of bearings. The identification and the diagnosis of bearings were carried out by simulations and experiments.

  • During the last decades, Pendulum Bearings with one or more concave sliding surfaces have been dominating bridge structures. For bridges with relative small lengths, the use of classical pendulum bearings could be a simple and cheaper solution. This work attempts to investigate the effectiveness of such a system, and especially its behavior for the case of a seismic excitation. The results obtained have shown that the classical pendulum bearings are very effective, mainly for bridges with short or intermediate length.

  • The need for developing a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in tilting pad proceeding bearings has been well-recognized, since previous experimental work about the performances of the bearings hypothesized that the friction in the bearings is closely related to their performances. Especially, the sliding friction between pad and pivot in the ball and socket type of the bearings can influence the performance of the bearing. We propose a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in the ball and socket type, which considers the geometrics of the pad and pivot of the bearings, by assuming the sliding friction in the ball and socket bearing as Coulomb friction. By utilizing the proposed model for pad-pivot friction, we show the analysis of Reynolds equation and energy equation, which explain the thermo-hydrodynamic characteristics of tilting pad proceeding bearings, by taking into account the turbulence and inlet pressure building as well. The results of the study show that the performance of titling-pad proceeding bearings can be greatly influenced by the pad-pivot friction. In particular, we have shown that the analysis of the pad-pivot friction is useful to explain the static proceeding loci and the dynamic characteristics of the ball and socket type of the bearings. Furthermore, for a given operating condition, we can obtain various equilibrium states which satisfy the static equilibrium conditions, by considering the pad-pivot friction.

  • Bridge bearings are devices absorbing the displacements of the superstructure. Elastomeric bearings used generally as bridge bearings absorb the displacements of the superstructure using their rubber characteristics. Elastomeric bearings should make sure their shear fatigue performance not to impede the durability of bridge system. In this paper shear fatigue tests were performed and stiffness were measured through the shear fatigue tests. Tests results show the measured stiffness of elastomeric bearings have no specific tendency. This paper found that elastomeric bearings show bad shear performance or fail early if elastomeric bearings are manufactured with a doublefold elastomeric layer.
