Thermal Characteristic Analysis of a High-Precision Centerless Grinding Machine for Machining Ferrules (페룰 가공용 초정밀 무심 연삭기의 열 특성 해석)

  • To perform the finish grinding process of ferrules which are widely used as fiber optic connectors, a high-precision centerless grinding machine is necessary. The high-precision centerless grinding machine is consisted of the hydrostatic GW and RW spindle systems, hydrostatic RW feeding mechanism, RW swivel mechanism, on-machine GW and RW dressers, and concrete-filled steel bed. In this study, the thermal characteristics of the high-precision centerless grinding machine such as the temperature distribution, temperature rise and thermal deformation, are estimated based on the virtual prototype of the grinding machine and the heat generation rates of heat sources related to the machine operation conditions. The reliability of the predicted results is demonstrated by the temperature characteristics measured from the physical prototype. Especially, the predicted and measured results show the fact that the high-precision centerless grinding machine has very stable thermal characteristics.

  • The outer diameter finishing grinding process required for ferrules, which are widely used as fiber optic connectors, is carried out by high-precision centerless grinding machines. In this study, the thermal characteristics of such a machine, for example, the temperature distribution, temperature rise, and thermal deformation, were estimated based on a virtual prototype and the heat generation rates of heat sources related to normal operating conditions. The prototype consisted of a concrete-filled bed. hydrostatic grinding wheel (GW) and regulating wheel (RW) spindle systems, a hydrostatic RW feed mechanism, a RW swivel mechanism, and on-machine GW and RW dressers. The reliability of the predicted results was demonstrated using temperature characteristics measured from a physical prototype. The predicted and measured results indicated that this particular high-precision centerless grinding machine had very stable thermal characteristics.

Experimental study on cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete parallel redundancy walls

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls are one of the most commonly used lateral-load resisting systems in high-rise buildings. RC Parallel redundancy walls studied herein consist of two parts nested to each other. These two parts have different mechanical behaviors and energy dissipation mechanisms. In this paper, experimental studies of four 1/2-scale specimens representing this concept, which are subjected to in-plane cyclic loading, are presented and test results are discussed. Two specimens consist of a wall frame with barbell-shaped walls embedded in it, and the other two consist of a wall frame and braced walls nested each other. The research mainly focuses on the failure mechanism, strength, hysteresis loop, energy dissipation capacity and stiffness of these walls. Results show that the RC parallel redundancy wall is an efficient lateral load resisting component that acts as a "dual" system with good ductility and energy dissipation capacity. One main part absorbs a greater degree of the energy exerted by an earthquake and fails first, whereas the other part can still behave as an independent role in bearing loads after earthquakes.

Miniaturized Rectangular Slotted Nameplate Antenna Design for Satellite and Radio Determination Applications

  • A slotted rectangular nameplate antenna design with a patch bearing the name of the first author is presented. A $6.8mm{\times}26mm{\times}1.6mm$ substrate of FR-4 epoxy material having a relative permittivity of 4.4 and a dielectric loss tangent of 0.02 is used. Additionally, the feeding technique used is a coaxial mechanism. The standard antenna design parameters, including the reflection coefficient, bandwidth, radiation pattern, gain, directivity, and voltage standing wave radio (VSWR) for the proposed prototype are analyzed using a high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) v-15, and are compared to the measured results. The designed structure may be considered for different satellite- and radio-determination applications at the respective resonant frequencies.

  • The submersible motor pump could have much more merits than the general pump such as higher exhaustion head, narrower installahon place, lower noise due to operating in the water and so on. But, so far, hydraulic mechanism of the axial thrust at impeller was not analysed quantitatively and so it is very difficult to solve the occuring problems. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to minimize the axial thrust acting on thrust bearing of submersible motor pump through the analysis of hydraulic mechanism of thrust and design rivision of impeller. Test carried out on the pump with an impeller 92mm in diameter, 6 balacing holes 10mm in diameter, showed the thrust is reduced by about 86% at the normal operating point.

Pier Stiffness and Bridge Collapse Mechanism (교각 강성과 교량의 붕괴기구)

  • While structures are designed within elastic range by other designs, plastic behavior of structures should be verified and controlled in order to prevent structural collapse by the earthquake resistant design. No Collapse Requirement for typical bridges is to avoid falling down of superstructure by way of plastic behavior of certain structural elements and to operate emergency vehicles after earthquake. Such plastic behavior is restricted to connections or pier columns and appropriate measures are required for each case. Earthquake Resistant Design part of Roadway Bridge Design Code provides design processes for Ductile Collapse Mechanism by forming plastic hinges at pier columns. Also for bridges with reinforced concrete piers ductility-based design processes are provided as an appendix constructing Brittle Collapse Mechanism with connection yielding. In this study, a typical bridge with steel bearing connections and reinforced concrete piers is selected and No Collapse Design procedure considering both Ductile and Brittle Collapse Mechanism is proposed together with revisions required for the Earthquake Resistant Design part.

  • Dry sliding wear behavior of ultra-fine grained (UFG) plain low carbon dual phase steel, of which microstructure consists of hard martensite in a ductile ferrite matrix, has been investigated. The wear characteristics of the UFG dual phase steel was compared with that of a coarse grained dual phase steel under various applied load conditions. Dry sliding wear test were carried out using a pin-on-disk type tester at various loads of 1N to 100N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.20m/s against an AISI 52100 bearing steel ball at room temperature. The sliding distance was fixed as 1000m for all wear tests. The wear rate was calculated by dividing the weight loss, measured to the accuracy of 10-5g by the specific gravity and sliding distance. The worn surfaces and wear debris were analyzed by SEM, EDS and profilometer. Micro-vickers hardness of the cross section of worn surfaces were conducted to analyze strain hardening underneath the contact surfaces. The wear mechanism of the UFG dual phase steel was investigated with emphasis on the unstable nature of the grain boundaries of the UFG microstructure.

  • Sliding wear mechanism of a high nitrogen austenitic 18Cr-18Mn-2Mo-0.9N steel has been investigated. Dry sliding wear tests of the steel were carried out at various loads of IN-10N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.15m/s against AISI 52100 bearing steel balls. Solution ($1050^{\circ}C$) and isothermal aging ($900^{\circ}C$) heat treatments were performed on the steel and the effect of the heat treatments on the wear was investigated. Wear rates of the solution-treated steel specimen remained low until 5N load, and then increased abruptly at loads above 5N. The rates of isothermally aged specimens were low and increased gradually with the applied load. Worn surfaces, their cross sections, and wear debris of the steel specimens were examined with a scanning electron microscopy. Phases of the heat-treated specimen and the wear debris were identified using XRD. The transformed phase underneath a sliding track was investigated and analyzed using a TEM. Effects of the phase transformation during the wear and $Cr_{2}N$ precipitates formed during the isothermal aging on the wear of the austenitic steel were discussed.
