  • The performance of refrigerant oil at the thrust bearing and at the journal bearing of a scroll compressor is a significant factor. This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano-fluid with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and nano powders. The particle size distribution and oxidation stability of nano powders prepared by the electrical explosion method were analyzed by TEM and BET. It was found that the nanoparticles showed a spherical morphology with sizes ranging of 40-60 nm and were covered with graphite layers of 2-4 nm. The thermal conductivity of POE oil was 0.1-0.5W/mk higher than that of POE oil. The coefficient of friction of Cu-POE was found to be 0.1 higher than that of Al2O3. The cooling capacity of the heat pump with nanofluid increased to 3.67%, and the performance was improved by 5.83%.

  • Performance of refrigerant oil at the thrust-bearing and at the journal-bearing of a scroll compressor is a significant factor. This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano oil with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano particles. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear using nano-oil is evaluated using the disk on disk tester for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction. The average friction coefficient of nano-oil was reduced by 60% compared to raw oil under 600 N and 1,000 rpm. It is believed that the interaction of nano particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Worn surfaces of frictional specimen were also investigated by the optical and atomic force microscopy. Conclusively, it is expected that wear and friction coefficient of compressor can be reduced by alignment applying nano-oil as refrigerant oil.

  • Applying a general coupled lateral and torsional vibration finite element model of gear pair element, this paper intends to look into in detail the coupled lateral and torsional vibration characteristics of a turbo-chiller rotor bearing system, having a bull-pinion speed increasing gear. Investigations have been carried out systematically by comparing the uncoupled and coupled natural frequencies and their mode shapes upon varying the gear mesh stiffness with considerations on rotating speeds, and also by comparing the strain energies of lateral and torsional vibration modes. Results hale shown that some modes may hale the coupled lateral and torsional mode characteristics as the gear mesh stiffness Increases over a certain value, and moreover that their associated dominant modes may be different from their initial modes, j.e., a certain dominant mode may change from an initial torsional one to a lateral one or from an initial lateral one to a torsional one.

  • This paper presents the analysis result of load-transfer mechanism and pile movements associated with the development of frictional resistance to understand the engineering characteristics of micropile behavior. An field load tests were performed for two different types of micropiles and they are (i) thread bar reinforcement with D=50mm and (ii) hollow steel pipe reinforcement with $D_{out}$=82.5mm and $D_{in}$=60.5mm and wrapped with woven geotextile for post-grouting. The load test results indicated that micropiling with pressured grouting provided better load-transfer characteristics than micropiling with gravity grouting under both compressive and tensile loading conditions in that unit skin frictional resistance is well distributed along installation depth. The unit weight and unconfined compressive strength of cured grout were obtained for each piling method. The strength and unit weight of micropile with pressured grouting was higher than those with gravity grouting. The fact that load bearing quality with pressured grouting is better than that of gravity grouting could be attributed to the dense mutual adhesion between surrounding ground and pile due to pressurized grouting method and better grout quality.

  • In this study, the effect of flexibility of superstructures and nonlinear characteristics of LRB (Lead Rubber Bearing) isolator on inelastic response of base isolated structures is investigated. To demonstrate the intensity of damage in superstructures, demand response modification factor without the consideration of damping reduction factor, demand RI, is used and the N2 method is applied to compute this factor. To evaluate the influence of superstructure flexibility on inelastic response of base isolated structures, different steel intermediate moment resisting frames with different heights have been investigated. In lead rubber bearing, the rubber provides flexibility and the lead is the source of damping; variations of aforementioned characteristics are also investigated on inelastic response of superstructures. It is observed that an increase in height of superstructure leads to higher value of demand RI till 4-story frame but afterward this factor remains constant; in other words, an increase in height until 4-story frame causes more damage in the superstructure but after that superstructure's damage is equal to the 4-story frame's. The results demonstrate that the low value of second stiffness (rubber stiffness in LRBs) tends to show a significant decrease in demand RI. Increase in value of characteristic strength (yield strength of the lead in LRBs) leads to decrease in the demand RI.

  • This paper describes the simulation of the levitation force between permanent magnet and high Tc(critical temperature) superconductor(HTSC). Levitation force is evaluated numerically on the basis of the magnetic vector potential method and the critical state model. The superconductor is approximated to 2-D slab model. By performing computations, the following characteristics have been investigated: the process of the generation of hysteresis, the various hysteretic behaviors. The characteristics of hysteresis are important for the application to magnetic bearing, for the damping and the nonlinear stiffness is related to hysteresis.

  • The displacement and pressure field of liquid crystals are analyzed numerically and compared with classical Reynolds theory. A plane slider bearing is employed as a simple example considering elasticity, permeability and splay effect which are the inherent characteristics of layered liquid crystals. Due to the geometric constraint of thin wedge and the strong anchoring behavior of the liquid crystals dislocations are inevitable. A finite element method is used to solve five coupled nonlinear equations. The load characteristics based on the pressure distribution along the gap shows that the liquid crystals can carry large load compared to the conventional lubricants.

  • Many lubricated systems experience boundary, lubrication condition during operation. However, the friction and wear characteristics of boundary lubrication are not clearly understood. In this work the factors which affect the friction and wear between boundary lubricated metallic surfaces are investigated. Experiments were performed on atuminium, copper, and SM45C with bearing ball using a pin-on disk type tester. The experimental conditions were determined by Taguchi experimental method. From the experimental results, the major factors that influence the friction and wear characteristics of boundary lubrication could be identified.

  • Cooling characteristics of cooling jacket for spindle system with built-in motor are studied. For the analysis, three dimensional model for the cooling jacket is built by using finite volume method. The three dimensional model includes the estimation on the amount of heat generation of bearing and built-in motor and the thermal characteristic values such as heat flux on the boundary. Numerical results show that flow rate are important factors for cooling characteristics of cooling jacket.

  • This paper aims to investigate the characteristics of partition walls which are lightweighted, such as dry walls of gypsum boards. These partition walls are prospected to be new ones to cope with M.C.(Modular Coordination), flexibility, non-bearing system, substitution to masonryworks. Ten kinds of partition walls are varied with core materials and depth, constructions. Acoustic characteristics of these partitions, transmisson loss, are tested in reverberation chambers.
