  • In the construction industry, lack of reliability in the quality of recycled aggregates, harmful substance problems, and negative consumer perceptions limit the expansion of the use of recycled aggregates. In this respect, existing studies mainly focus on the use of recycled coarse aggregates in concrete in consideration of durability. On the other hand, in the case of recycled fine aggregates, not only are there insufficient cases applied to major structures, but the scope of application is very limited due to lack of awareness. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to present the possibility of their application in bearing and non-bearing wall structures through physical characteristics experiments of concrete bricks for masonry according to various mixing ratios of recycled fine aggregates and cement amounts. To this end, the compressive strength and absorption rate of concrete bricks were measured focusing on the mixing ratio of the recycled fine aggregate and the crushed fine aggregate and the amount of cement. As a result, it is found that it is possible to use 100% of recycled fine aggregate for 200kg/m3 of cement or 25% of crushed fine aggregate mixed with 75% of recycled fine aggregate for the same amount of cement to achieve the compressive strength of 13MPa, witch is one of the quality requirements for concrete bricks for bearing walls. In addition, it is found that to meet the strength of 8MPa, one of the quality requirements for non-bearing walls, it is sufficient to use 100% of the recycled fine aggregate for 100kg/m3 of cement. Through the absorption rate tests, it is also confirmed that the absorption rate of the concrete brick is 13% or less by meeting the required performance criteria. This means that even if recycled fine aggregate is used in the manufacture of concrete bricks, the quality standards required by KS F 4004 (concrete bricks) can be sufficiently met.

  • Recently, the importance of rotordynamic stability has been increased because of the tendency to employ ultra-high speeds in rotating machinery. In particular, the dynamic characteristics of gas bearings for high-speed rotating machinery need to be identified at various excitation frequencies to predict the rotor's behavior. In this study, we perform dynamic loading tests for gas-foil bearings (GFBs) to determine the bump foil structure and an air-film combined bump-foil structure for varying excitation frequencies. We calculate the dynamic characteristics from the measured force and displacement data. The air film is generated by a pressurized air supply. Based on the results, the stiffness coefficients of the bump structure and the air-film combined bump structure increased, while the damping coefficients decreased at increasing excitation frequencies. Further, the stiffness and damping coefficients of the air-film combined structure show lower values than those of the bump structure. Consequently, we identify the frequency-dependent dynamic characteristics of the bump structure and the effect of gas film on the dynamic characteristics of GFBs. Furthermore, to reveal the effectiveness of the proposed method, we perform experiments and discuss two methods of extracting the dynamic characteristics from the measured data.

  • Dry sliding wear behavior of ultra-fine grained (UFG) plain low carbon dual phase steel, of which microstructure consists of hard martensite in a ductile ferrite matrix, has been investigated. The wear characteristics of the UFG dual phase steel was compared with that of a coarse grained dual phase steel under various applied load conditions. Dry sliding wear test were carried out using a pin-on-disk type tester at various loads of 1N to 100N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.20m/s against an AISI 52100 bearing steel ball at room temperature. The sliding distance was fixed as 1000m for all wear tests. The wear rate was calculated by dividing the weight loss, measured to the accuracy of 10-5g by the specific gravity and sliding distance. The worn surfaces and wear debris were analyzed by SEM, EDS and profilometer. Micro-vickers hardness of the cross section of worn surfaces were conducted to analyze strain hardening underneath the contact surfaces. The wear mechanism of the UFG dual phase steel was investigated with emphasis on the unstable nature of the grain boundaries of the UFG microstructure.

  • The two-for-one(TFO) twister is precision machinery that twists fibers rapidly under constant tension. Since the quality of the twisted yarn is directly deteriorated by faults of the twister, such as the distortion of the spinning axis, bearing abrasion, and tension irregularity, it is important to detect faults of the TFO twister at an early stage. In this research, a new algorithm is proposed to detect faults of the TFO twister and their causes, by measuring the vibrations of the TFO twister and obtaining frequency components with a FFT algorithm. The TFO twister with faults showed increased vibrations and each fault generated vibrations at different frequencies. By analyzing changes of characteristics of vibrations, we can determine faulty twisters. The proposed fault detection algorithm can be implemented cheaply with a signal processor chip. It can be used to find when to repair a faulty TFO twister without much loss of yam on-line.

  • The basic mechanism of lubrication between the piston ring and the cylinder wall is developed theoretically under the assumption of a reciprocating and dynamically loaded slider-bearing pair of parabolic form and smooth plane. A numerical computation for the prediction in cyclic variations of film thickness, net lubricant flow and frictional behaviour is attempted, and the influenec on the performance characteristics due to the ring height, ring face radius of curvature and the degree of offset, is also examined. The computational procedures develeped for a single ring system are extended and applied further to the complex problem of a ring pack system. It is well known that the ring pressure which is the total load on a ring, can be obtained from either an experimental measurement or a gas flow analysis. In this work, the latter of a gas low analysis method was used to calculate the pressures. It is remarked that the work done was focused on the role of flow continuity and lubricant starvation within the ring pack lubrication.

  • As we see the continuation of the increase in the speed of the High Speed railroad worldwide, there is a concern for a possible problem in the connecting transition zone in the railway infrastructure. Honam High Speed railroad's transition zone in the hub for the rotation structures and other supporting structures such as approach slab, sub slab, approach block, etc. Due to its increase in speed of the design speed, and its important role on the driving stability and credibility of the bearing ground performance, we must seek and fine a prevention plan for a cause of differential settlement, as well as the cause of the derailment. In this dissertation, domestic, as well as international design manuals and the applicability of the control standards are studied. Also through the study target, Honam High Speed railroad zone 4-1, we evaluated the connecting componant of the Yeon-Jeong bridge through the eigenvalue and weight transfer of the train when operated at 300km/h, 350km/h, 400km/h, 450km/h, and were able to achieve detailed assessment by checking track behaviors, looking at various components such as the rotation acceleration according to the inversion of the distance length, displace length, displacement and stress distribution. Through these studied, possibility of operating at 400km/h was evaluated based on the condition of the current design basis.

  • Since the RNA world hypothesis was proposed, a large number of regulatory noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been identified in many species, ranging from microorganisms to mammals. During the characterization of these newly discovered RNAs, RNAs having both coding and noncoding functions were discovered, and these were considered bifunctional RNAs. The recent use of computational and high-throughput experimental approaches has revealed increasing evidence of various sources of bifunctional RNAs, such as protein-coding mRNAs with a noncoding isoform and long ncRNAs bearing a small open reading frame. Therefore, the genomic diversity of Janusfaced RNA molecules that have dual characteristics of coding and noncoding indicates that the functional roles of RNAs have to be revisited in cells on a genome-wide scale. Such studies would allow us to further understand the complex gene-regulatory network in cells. In this review, we discuss three major genomic sources of bifunctional RNAs and present a handful of examples of bifunctional RNA along with their functional roles.

  • At present, a high-speed swivel tool head of a small size is required to improve the productivity of CNC automatic lathes. Hence, there is growing interest in shorter machining times with higher cutting speeds. However, an increase in the rotation speed of a swivel tool head also has adverse effects, such as vibration and noise caused by the swivel tool head system. In this work, the fatigue life and contact pressure of a swivel tool head bearing system driven by gears were calculated. Based on the calculated results, a prototype swivel tool head was manufactured and its static and dynamic characteristics, i.e., the vibration, noise and precision, were measured using a reliability testing device which allows the application of cutting force to the end of the swivel tool head.

  • In general, conventional road pavements are designed under the assumption that the shear strength of geomaterials are under saturated state. In reality, however, most of the pavement geomaterials exists under the unsaturated state. To deal with this gap between saturated and unsaturated conditions, in this paper, unsaturated shear strength was estimated using the results from the triaxial compression test and soil-water characteristics curves. Then, yield loads were assessed using 2-Dimensional finite element method with the selected nonlinear elastic model and the Mohr-Coulomb yield criteria. In addition, various unsaturated condition and surface layer effects on the yield load of granular materials were identified. Therefore, the results demonstrated would provide a possibility to estimate bearing capacity of paved or unpaved roads using unsaturated soil mechanics.

  • Cankers are localized dead areas in the bark of stems, branches or twigs of many types of trees and shrubs, and are usually caused by fungi. We observed severe canker symptoms in oak trees located in Gyeongnam province in 2011. A total 31 trees were discovered with cankers of varied size, with an average of $48.5{\times}15.2cm$. Black, half-rounded globular mound shaped stromata were associated with the cankers, and the asci of the fungi associated with the cankers were cylindrical shaped with their spore-bearing parts being up to 84 ${\mu}m$ in length. The average fungal ascospores size was $7.59{\times}4.23{\mu}m$. The internal transcribed spacer sequence for the canker causing fungus showed 99% similarity to the sequence of $Annulohypoxylon$ $truncatum$. In this study, the isolated fungus was precisely described and then compared with fungi of similar taxa.
