  • Epithermal deposits are an important class of hydrothermal deposits, that have recently seen an surge of exploration and research, principally as significant resources of gold and silver. Epithermal deposits form at shallow depths (surface to 1-2km) and temperatures less than 30$0^{\circ}C$ (Hayba et al., 1985), and encompass a variety of low-sulfidation (near-neutral pH, reduced fluid; LS) and high-sulfidation (acidic and oxidized fluid; HS) deposits (Sillitoe, 1993; White and Hedenquist, 1995).   • In this paper, the critical vibration limits of a spindle unit for a high speed ball pen tip processing machine are studied. The vibration of the spindle is measured by FFT, and the influence of the vibration amplitude due to unbalance, bearing deflect, bite, and timing belts tension is analyzed. The critical vibration limits of the spindle is determined by the X, and Z directional vibrations of the spindle. Both FET and RMS values can be used to analyze the vibration characteristics of the spindle. From experimental results the limit line can be drawn for the spindle. The RMS value for the vibration limit is 3 G.

  • The electric motor is essential to drive turbo machinery. In order to overcome the speed limitations of general motors, the inverter is used to perform high speed to tens of rpm. The high speed drives are widely used in many applications such as turbo blower, turbo centrifugal compressors, and pump using air bearing technique. Starting of high speed motor can cause step out, stall, oscillation of motor because the phase inductance is much smaller than that of ordinary motor. This paper studied on the starting characteristic of variable speed centrifugal chiller considering high speed motor characteristics. Finally, the superiority of the inverter is verified by experimental results.

  • In this paper, a windmill type ultrasonic motor operated by single-Phase AC electric field was fabricated, and then torque characteristics were investigated. A metal-ceramic composite component was used as the stator\`s vibrator to generate ultrasonic vibrations. The windmill type ultrasonic motors has only three components; a stator element with two wind-mill shape slotted metal endcaps, a rotor and a bearing. In this parer we measured torque, when stator\`s slot was changed Iron 4, 6, 8. Brass metal was pressed with umbrella-type using metal molt then slot of 3 kind was manufactured. The maximum revolution speed was 388(rpm) in the case of a small ultrasonic motor of 11.35 mm diameter, 8 slot and 1.01 mm thickness. The maximum torque of 0.17 mNm was obtained at a speed of 131 rpm.

  • In magnetic hard disk drives, higher areal recording density requires reduction of head-disk spacing. To overcome the increase of stiction associated with reduction of head-disk spacing, a padder slider, which adds pads to slider's air bearing surface, can be one of the practical solution for sub 20 nm flying height, and even for near contact recording. This study investigated the tribological characteristics of a padder slider. A padder slider took off slowly but showed less friction force than a normal slider. The hot/dry CSS test and drag test indicated that pad wear of a padder slider was negligible. The tribological performance of disk is an important factor to be considered. In particular, less carbon overcoat layer of the disk will result in higher stiction and wear in slider/disk interface. In conclusion, a padder slider shows encouraging tribological performances for practical use in HDD.

  • This paper considers two dimensional analysis for lubrication between the single piston ring and the cylinder liner. The piston ring is treated as a reciprocating, hydrodynamic bearing with combined sliding and squeeze motion. Reynolds' equation is used, to model lubrication with Reynolds' cavitation boundary condition. This analysis is developed to get the cyclic variation of minimum film thickness and viscous frictional force. Two types of piston ring face shape are considered. This result can be used to study the influence of ring shape design parameter to improve the characteristics of sealing and lubrication.

  • Since Winslow (1) has reported an electro - theological (ER) effect which features remarkable and reversible changes in the properties of the fluid due to an imposed external electric field, numerous applications of ER fluids in mechanical devices, such as clutches, control valves, active dampers, and etc. have been proposed to improye dramatical ly their performances (2,3). When the external electric field is imposed to the ER fluid, it behaves as a Bingham fluid, displaying a field dependent yield shear stress which is widely variable. Without the electric field, the ER fluid has a reversible and constant viscosity so that it flows as a Newtonian fluid. Another salient feature of the ER fluid is that the time required for the variation is very short (< 0.001 sec) (4-6). These attractive.characteristics of the ER fluid provide the possibility of the appearance of new engineering technology , for instance, an active vibration control system. Recently, the application of the ER fluid to rotor-bearing systems has been also initiated.

  • A severe strip vibration in continuous galvanizing line facilities of the steel companies has sometimes occurred due to the exceeding wearing of the roll bush and bearing. This vibration brings on the lack of uniform coating thickness in steel plate. As a result, the total maintenance and product costs in this factory are increased by the shortage of operation time for the replacement of bush, bearings and these components. In this study, the vibration characteristics of this strip are investigated by the FEM using ANSYS. Also the vibration measurement of strip and its structure performed by the laser Doppler vibrometer(LDV) and accelerometers are compared to theoretical analysis results.

  • There are many benefits such as increased areal density, reduced power consumption, applied smaller size and improved shock resistance in Load/Unload(L/UL) mechanism. It has been the key technology of developing small form factor hard disk drive used in portable digital devices. The main objectives of L/UL are no slider-disk contact and faster L/UL process. For realizing those, we must consider many design parameters in L/UL systems. In this paper, we focus on the effects of ramp profile. We can investigate dynamic characteristics of suspension tap and slider on ramp during unloading process experimentally. In special, we examine the effects of vortical velocities, ramp slopes and disk vibrations. As the result of these experiments, we propose design criteria of advanced ramp profile for good unloading performance.

Finite Element Analysis of Vibration of HDD Disk-Spindle System with Rigid Complex Spindle and Flexible Shaft (복잡한 형상의 강체 스핀들과 유연축을 고려한 HDD 디스크-스핀들 계의 고유진동 유한요소해석)

  • Equations of motion are derived and solved using the finite element method substructure synthesis for the disk-spindle system with rigid spindle and flexible shaft. The disk is modeled as a flexible spinning disk by Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman nonlinear strain. The spindle supporting the flexible disk is modeled as a rigid body to consider its complex geometry. The stationary shaft supporting the rotating disk-spindle-bearing system is modeled by Euler beam, and the ball bearings are modeled as the stiffness matrix with 5 degrees of freedom. Developed theory is applied to analyze the vibration characteristics of a 3.5" HDD and a 2.5" HDD, respectively, and modal tests are performed to verify the simulation results. This paper shows that the developed theory can be effectively applied to the rotating disk-spindle system with the spindle of complex shape.
