  • We fabricated an anode-type ion source driven by a charge repulsion mechanism and investigated its beam shape controlled by a Whenelt mask integrated at the front face of the source. The ion beam shape was observed to vary by changing the geometry of the Whenelt mask. As the angle of inclination of the Whenelt mask was varied from $40^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$, the etched area at a thin film was reduced from 20 mm to 7.5 mm at the working distance of 286 mm, and the light transmittance through the etched surface was increased from 78% to 80%, respectively. In addition, for the step height difference, ${\Delta}$ between the inner mask and the outer mask of ${\Delta}=0$, -1 mm, and +1 mm, we observed the ion beam shape was formed to be collimated, diverged, and focused, respectively. The focal length of the focused beam was 269 mm. We approved experimentally a simple way of controlling the electric field of the ion beam by changing the geometry of the Whenelt mask such that the initial direction of the ion beam in the plasma region was manipulated effectively.

  • The energy transfer between two incident beams in a photorefractive Cu-doped(0.04 wt. %) ${(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})}_{0.2}{(Sr_{0.61}Ba_{0.39})}_{0.9}Nb_2O_6$ crystal is investigated at 632.8 nm laser wavelength. In addition, the coherent two-wave coupling properties of a photoinduced refractive-index grating in the presence of amplitude modulation on the signal beam or reference beam are also experimentally investigated. Some preliminary exprimental results are presented for use as a dynamic photorefracitive combiners and pulse shaping elements in coherent optical communication systems and in optical signal processing.

  • Beam shaping assembly (BSA) is a vital component in Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) for obtaining epithermal neutron beams. Several feasible designs of BSA for accelerator-based BNCT (AB-BNCT) neutron source are carried out based on neutrons by bombarding a natural lithium target with 10 mA, 2.8 MeV proton beams. The calculation results demonstrate that a thickness of 45 cm is appropriate for general moderators referring to the therapeutic parameter of Advanced Depth (AD). A series of optimizations are performed and two results are confirmed: One is that employing the configuration of MgF2 and FLUENTAL combined by 1:1 could improve the therapeutic rate (TR) of tumors at a depth of middle region, and the other one is that the TR of superficial tumors can be increased by adding a 5 cm thick boron-11 secondary moderator at the end of general moderators. As a result, an innovative conception of an adjustable moderator is recommended to BNCT. Compared to the MgF2 moderator with a fixed thickness of 45 cm, the TR value can be improved by a maximum of 47.7 % by using the adjustable moderator. Furthermore, the configuration of adjustable moderator has been designed with regulation method for treating tumors of different depths.

  • This research is concerned with the derivation of equations of motion for a slewing beam and the application of input shaper to the bang-bang control to achieve vibration suppression. When a uniform beam with a tip mass rotates about the axis perpendicular to the undeformed beam's longitudinal axis, it experiences inertial loading. Hence, the beam vibrates. In this paper, we used the input shaper for the maneuvering control to suppress vibrations. The maneuvering control which can achieve a minimum-time control is a bang-bang control. The input-shaped bang-bang maneuvering is used to suppress vibrations both theoretically and experimentally. The slewing beam experiment is not an easy subject because of the inherent damping existing inside the rotor. We propose the use of a negative damping to eliminate the rotor damping. Numerical and experimental results show that the input-shaper can be effectively used for the vibration suppression of a slewing beam.

  • A fast and precise technique to make 3-dimensional object which is called direct metal shaping process is processed. It is very useful technique in design and inspection. Using this developed system, a solid object is made. In experiment, test parts are built by varying three factors, laser power, scan path, scan speed. This process used device, which is different from the widely used in rapid prototyping in that powder feeding device is used. Spraying powder directly at the focused laser beam and then three dimensional object is made by the deposit of melted metal powder. The optimum scanning path is found to be zigzag path, which had little thermal affection on base metal. As a result of these experiments, it was found that optimum scanning speed is 15mm/sec laser power is 50W. This constructed 3-dimensional object could be used in mold manufacturing directly.
