  • In this paper, studied about the effect of open crack and the moving mass on the dynamic behavior of simply supported pipe conveying fluid. The equation of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equation. The influences of the velocity of moving mass, the velocity of fluid flow and a crack have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a simply supported pipe system by numerical method. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. Therefore, the crack is modelled as a rotational spring. Totally, as the velocity of fluid flow is increased, the mid-span deflection of simply supported pipe conveying fluid is increased. The position of the crack is located in the middle point of the pipe, the mid-span deflection of simply supported pipe presents maximum deflection.

  • The web-encased steel-concrete composite (WESCC) beam is a new developed steel-concrete composite beam. Experiments of six simply supported WESCC beam specimens were conducted. The effects of the shear-span ratio and steel section type were all investigated on the static behaviors such as failure modes, failure mechanism and bearing capacity. The experimental results denoted that all specimens failed in bending mode and the degree of combination between the bottom armor plate of steel shape and concrete were very well without any evident slippage, which demonstrated that the function of bottom armor plate and web were fully exerted in the WESCC beams. It could be concluded the WESCC beams have high stiffness, high load carrying capacity and advanced ductility. The design methods are proposed which mainly consist the bearing capacity calculation of bending and flexural rigidity. The calculation results of the bearing capacity and deflection which take the shear deflection into account are in agreement with the experimental results. The design methods are useful for design and application of the innovative composite beams.

  • The second order analysis taking place due to non-linear behavior of the structures under the mechanical and geometric factors through implementing exact and approximate methods is an indispensible issue in the analysis of such structures. Among the exact methods is the slope-deflection method that due to its simplicity and efficiency of its relationships has always been in consideration. By solving the differential equations of the modified slope-deflection method in which the effect of axial compressive force is considered, the stiffness matrix including trigonometric entries would be obtained. The complexity of computations with trigonometric functions causes replacement with their Maclaurin expansion. In most cases only the first two terms of this expansion are used but to obtain more accurate results, more elements are needed. In this paper, the effect of utilizing higher order terms of Maclaurin expansion on reducing the number of required elements and attaining more rapid convergence with less error is investigated for the Bernoulli beam with various boundary conditions. The results indicate that when using only one element along the beam length, utilizing higher order terms in Maclaurin expansion would reduce the relative error in determining the critical buckling load and kinematic parameters in the second order analysis.

  • Tensile behavior in concrete has been neglected until recently. However, the effect of tensile stresses in concrete must be considered where the member primarily carries tensile forces or when ultimate strength is affected by the cracking history. In this paper, a series of experiments were performed with a reinforced rectangular beams of 15 specimens in order to investigate the effect of tension stiffening into the nonlinear analysis and cracking behavior. The experimental results were analyzed in terms of load-deflection curves and strain fracture energy with respect to the main experimental variables such as types of specimen, strength of concrete and steel ration. The results from experiments and finite element analysis were compared in terms of load-deflection relationship and cracking pattern. The results are as follows ; The tension stffening effects of reinforced concrete beams were observedc up to yielding of members after cracking showing strain energy difference of 35 % at the beam of 0.57% steel ratio compared with that of beam ignoring the tension stiffening effect. The tension stiffening of concrete strength 400kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 600kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ increased by 8% and 13%, respectively, compared with that of concrete strength 200kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The tension stiffening effects were greater at a ductile member rather than a brittle one. The load-deflection results of finite element analysis showed very similar results from experiment. The crack growth and pattern might be predicted from the nonlinear finite element analysis considering concrete stiffening.

  • In the past few years, the nondestructive inspection technology has greatly developed due to the increased necessity to gain a complete understanding of the bridge behavior. Especially, the deformations of bridges contain a lot of informations about its health state. By measuring these deformations it is possible to analyze the loading and aging behavior of the structure. However, the current, methods (such as LVDT, dial gage, optical displacement transducer, etc) are often of changeable application on site and have the limitations of installation. In this paper, the classical beam theory was reviewed and the deflections of structure are estimated using measured strain which is easy to acquire. The applicability of this algorithm is verified by laboratory(simple reinforced concrete beam) and field test. By this test, we proposed correction factor to estimate deflection of reinforced concrete beam after cracking, and analyze about the generation of correction factor. Also fiber optic sensors as well as resistive strain gages were installed in the concrete beams to establish the applicability of fiber optic sensors in the field of civil engineering.

  • The influence of prestress force on the fundamental frequency and static deflection shape of uncracked Prestressed Concrete (PC) beams with a parabolic bonded tendon was examined in this paper. Due to the conflicts among existing theories, the analytical solutions for properly considering the dynamic and static behavior of these members is not straightforward. A series of experiments were conducted for a total period of approximately 2.5 months on a PC beam made with high strength concrete, subsequently and closely to the 28 days of age of concrete. Specifically, the simply supported PC member was short term subjected to free transverse vibration and three-point bending tests during its early-age. Subsequently, the experimental data were compared with a model that describes the dynamic behavior of PC girders as a combination of two substructures interconnected, i.e., a compressed Euler-Bernoulli beam and a tensioned parabolic cable. It was established that the fundamental frequency of uncracked PC beams with a parabolic bonded tendon is sensitive to the variation of the initial elastic modulus of concrete in the early-age curing. Furthermore, the small variation in experimental frequency with time makes doubtful its use in inverse problem identifications. Conversely, the relationship between prestress force and static deflection shape is well described by the magnification factor formula of the "compression-softening" theory by assuming the variation of the chord elastic modulus of concrete with time.

  • This article discusses the dynamic response of Bernoulli-Euler straight beam with angular elastic supports subjected to moving load with variable velocity. A new engineering approach for determination of the dynamic effect from the moving load on the stressed and strained state of the beam has been developed. A dynamic coefficient, a ratio of the dynamic to the static deflection of the beam, has been defined on the base of an infinite geometrical absolutely summable series. Generalization of the R. Willis' equation has been carried out: generalized boundary conditions have been introduced; the generalized elastic curve's equation on the base of infinite trigonometric series method has been obtained; the forces of inertia from normal and Coriolis accelerations and reduced beam mass have been taken into account. The influence of the boundary conditions and kinematic characteristics of the moving load on the dynamic coefficient has been investigated. As a result, the dynamic stressed and strained state has been obtained as a multiplication of the static one with the dynamic coefficient. The developed approach has been compared with a finite element one for a concrete engineering case and thus its authenticity has been proved.

  • An iterative modal analysis approach is developed to determine the effect of transverse open cracks on the dynamic behavior of simply supported Euler-Bernoulli beams with the moving masses. The influences of the velocities of moving masses, the distance between the moving masses and a crack have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a simply supported beam system by numerical method. The Presence of crack results In large deflection of beam. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments i.e. the crack is modelled as a rotational spring. This flexibility matrix defines the relationship between the displacements and forces across the crack section and is derived by applying fundamental fracture mechanics theory. Totally, as the velocity of the moving masses and the distance between the moving masses are increased, the mid-span deflection of simply supported beam with the crack is decreased.
