The main objective of this study was to establish optimum condition of wet grinding process for manufacturing microparticulated seaweed calcium. Process parameters such as concentration of forming agent, rotor speed, bead size, feed rate, and grinding time were adapted during wet-grinding of seaweed calcium. The particle size range of the raw seaweed calcium was 10-20 $\mu$m. The calcium particles were reduced to under 1 $\mu$m as nano scale after grinding. Gum arabic was suitable for forming agent and 5%(w/v) concentration was the most effective in grinding efficiency. A wet-grinding process operated at 4,000 rpm rotor speed, 0,4 mm bead size, and 0.4 L/hr feeding rate, respectively, produced less than 600 mm(>>90%)-sized particles. In batch systems, 8 cycles of grinding showed higher efficiency, but 20 min of grinding time in continuous processing was more efficient to reduce particle size than the batch processing. Based on the result, the optimum conditions of the wet grinding process were established: operation time of 20 minutes, rotor speed of 4,000 rpm, bead size of 0.4 mm, feed rate of 40 mL/min and 30% mixing ration with water. The size of the resulting ultra fine calcium particles ranged between 40 and 660 mm.
In the circumferential welding of pipe, welding phenomenon changes with the position of pipe. Especially in the overhead position, back bead of vertical-up position would be sunk. To investigate the size of back bead and keyhole with the change of the flow rate of pilot and shield gas at each position, bead-on plate welds were conducted on 6mm thickness SS400 with inclined-up position. When the rest of welding conditions remained constant, the width of back bead was increased as the flow rate of pilot gas was increased. And back bead tended to convex as the flow rate of shield gas was increased.

Suspected carcinogen, TCE and PCE, are the most common groundwater pollutants extensively used as a solvent and degreaser. In this study, oxygenases were immobilized in Ca-alginate and chitosan bead. TCE degradation by the immoblized enzyme beads were measured for various size, enzyme addition volume and TCE contact time. The degradation was decreased as increasing the bead size. For overnight , more than 20% of TCE was degraded. The variation of enzyme activity was tested for the repeated use of enzyme beads.

The characteristics of bio-beads made of various supports, in which denitrifying bacteria were entrapped after those cells were isolated from sludge in wastewater treatment plants, were studied in order to develop a novel BNR system. Four species were isolated, and the bead made of 12% PVA showed the highest denitrification rate. The best concentration of cell loading was 200 mg/ml, and there was no significant difference in performance by bead sizes. The bead reached the maximum denitrification rate after 4 batch experiments, and with cell leaking of $10^3$ CFU/ml its capacity retained until 25 batches.
Overlay welding is carried out to improve the corrosion resistance, wear resistance and heat resistance on the surface of the chemical plant and steelmaking plant structures. In overlay welding, control of the bead size and the temperature distribution of weldment are particularly important because that is directly connected to the improvement of quality and productivity. The aim of this study is to model the welding heat source that is very useful to analyze the bead size and temperature distribution of weldment. To find the welding heat source model, numerical analyses are performed by using FE software MSC-marc.

In GMA(Gas Metal Arc)Welding, the weld size that is a locally melted area of a workpiece is one of the most important considerations in determining the strength of a welded structure. Variations in the weld power and the welding heat flux may affect the weld pool formation and ultimately the size of the weld. Therefore, an accurate prediction of the weld size requires a precise analysis of the weld thermal cycle. In this study, a model which can estimate the weld bead geometry and a method for thermal analysis, including the model, are suggested. In order to analyze the weld bead geometry, a mathematical model was developed with transformed coordinates to apply to the horizontal fillet joints. A heat flow analysis was performed with a two dimensional finite element model that was adopted for computing the base metal melting zone. The reliability of the proposed model and the thermal analysis was evaluated through experiments, and the results showed that the proposed model was very effective for predicting the weld bead shape and good correspondence in melting zone of the base metal.

Sodium alginate was used to immobilize Bifidobacterium breve ATCC 15700 cells. The ability of the Ca-alginate beads to protect the B. breve ATCC 15700 was evaluated under different conditions including alginate concentration, bead size, pH, hydrogen peroxide, and storage period. The survival of the B. Breve ATCC 15700 was estimated in pasteurized yogurt, containing either the immobilized or free cells, throughout the storage period. The survival cells in bead after exposure to acidic solution (pH 3.0) increased with increase of both the alginate gel concentration and bead size. Also, immobilized cells in alginate bead were more resistant than the free cells to hydrogen peroxide, storage period, and the environment inside yogur. When retreated beads with skim milk and nonretreated beads were tested in acidified pH 3.0 TPY media including acetic and lactic acid, the number of viable cells in the retreated bead was approximately 10-fold higher than that of nonretreated beads. This suggests that the skim milk operated as a material decreasing the diffusion of acid and hydrogen perosicde into alginate gels. From this research, it was found that yogurt itself supported immobilized cells with an improved protection from the extreme acidity in yogurt.

With the trend towards welding automation and robozation, mathematical models for studying the influence of various parameters on the weld bead geometry in Gas Metal Arc(GMA) welding process are required. The results of bead on plate welds deposited using the GMA welding process has enabled mathematical relationships to be developed that model the weld bead geometry. Experimental results were compared to outputs obtained using existing formulae that correlate process input variables to output parameters and subsequent modelling was performed in order to better predict the output of the GMA welding process. The aim of this work was to explain the relationships between GMA welding variables and weld bead geometry and thus, be able to predict input weld bead size. The relationships can be usefully employed for open loop process control and also for adaptive control provided that dynamic sensing of process output is performed.
