  • Ceramide analogs are potential chemotherapeutic agents. We report that a ceramide analog induces apoptosis in human prostate cancer cells. The ceramide analog induced cell death through an apoptotic mechanism, which was demonstrated by DNA fragmentation, the cleavage of poly ADP ribose polymerase (PARP), and a loss of membrane asymmetry. Treating the cells with ceramide analog resulted in the release of various proapoptotic mitochondrial proteins including cytochrome c and Smac/DIBLO into the cytosol, and a decrease in the mitochondrial membrane potential. In addition, the ceramide analog decreased the phospho-Akt and phospho-Bad levels. The expression of the antiapoptotic Bcl-2 decreased slightly with increasing Bax to Bcl-2 ratio. These results suggest that the ceramide analog induces apoptosis by regulating multiple signaling pathways that involve the mitochondrial pathway.

  • In order to widen the tuning range, capacitive degeneration is applied to fully CMOS LC VCOs. Small signal analysis shows that the fixed MOSFET capacitance seen by the LC tank is smaller than that of the traditional LC VCO, resulting in significant extension in the tuning range. This improvement in the tuning range has been verified through measurement of a 10-GHz LC VCO fabricated by $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process. The measured tuning range is from 9.8-GHz to 12-GHz, which is better than those of the reported CMOS LC VCOs in 10-GHz band. The measured phase noise is - 103dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset.

  • In this paper, a study on the reflector type frequency doubler, to suppress the undesired harmonics, is presented. A 12 to 24 GHz reflective frequency doubler is simulated and experimented. Design procedure of the frequency doubler with reflector is provided and the frequency doubler with good spectral purity is fabricated successfully. It has harmonic suppression of the $40{\sim}50\;dBc$ in the $1^{st}$ harmonic and the $50{\sim}60\;dB$ in the $3^{rd}$ harmonic with no additional filter. And, it has conversion gain with the input power of 0 dBm over bandwidth of 500 MHz. A NEC's ne71300(N) GaAs FET is used and the nonlinear model(EEFET3) using IC-CAP program is extracted for harmonic load pull simulation. Good agreement between simulated and measured results has been achieved.

  • A voltage controlled oscillator for the local oscillator in 380 MHz TRS handset is designed and fabricated. To improve the phase noise characteristics, the NEC's 2SC4226 transistor with NF=1.2 at 1 GHz and Toshiba's 1SV229 varactor diode with Q=70 are used. And an inductor of VCO is realized by microstrip line. At the bias condition of 5 V and 10 mA, the output power and phase noise in the operating frequency range of 357∼387 MHz are above 3.7 dBm and 111 dBc/Hz at 12.5KHz offset from the carrier, respectively. And FM sensitivity deviation are within ±0.4 KHz. This VCO is well suited for TRS handset.

  • Patchwork is a handicraft to put some certain shapes of small cloths together. Historical records of patchwork was discovered in Ancient Egypt as far back as BC 1000. Patchwork has been popular in the England and in around 13-$14^{th}$ century, European spliced little pieces of cloths for cold necessities, which made the handle of patchwork techniques gradually tend to decorative other than utility. Patchwork designs and techniques were taken across the Atlantic to North America with the early settlers in the mid-eighteenth century. In the early years of $20^{th}$ century, owing to the continuous technological advances, woman got more job opportunities that made patchwork technologies withered. Patchwork art continually evolved on the basis of historical and cultural factors to new styles, the famous Hawaiian, Stained Glass, Mola, Celtic, Victoria, Seminole and many other patchwork styles like that perfect embodied different art and cultures of different nations in different times.

  • This paper presents a compact K-band Doppler radar sensor for human vital signal detection that uses a radar configuration with only single coupler. The proposed radar front-end configuration can reduce the chip size and the additional RF power loss. The radar front-end IC is composed of a Lange coupler, VCO, and single balanced mixer. The oscillation frequency of the VCO is from 27.3 to 27.8 GHz. The phase noise of the VCO is -91.2 dBc/Hz at a 1 MHz offset frequency, and the output power is -4.8 dBm. The conversion gain of the mixer is about 11 dB. The chip size is $0.89{\times}1.47mm^2$. The compact Ka-band Doppler radar system was developed in order to demonstrate remote human vital signal detection. The radar system consists of a Ka-band Doppler radar module with a $2{\times}2$ patch array antenna, baseband signal conditioning block, DAQ system, and signal processing program. The front-end module size is $2.5{\times}2.5cm^2$. The proposed radar sensor can properly capture a human heartbeat and respiration rate at the distance of 50 cm.

  • A 10-b 500 MS/s A/D converter (ADC) with a hybrid calibration and error correction logic is described. The ADC employs a single-channel cascaded folding-interpolating architecture whose folding rate (FR) is 25 and interpolation rate (IR) is 8. To overcome the disadvantage of an offset error, we propose a hybrid self-calibration circuit at the open-loop amplifier. Further, a novel prevision digital error correction logic (DCL) for the folding ADC is also proposed. The ADC prototype using a 130 nm 1P6M CMOS has a DNL of ${\pm}0.8$ LSB and an INL of ${\pm}1.0$ LSB. The measured SNDR is 52.34-dB and SFDR is 62.04-dBc when the input frequency is 78.15 MHz at 500 MS/s conversion rate. The SNDR of the ADC is 7-dB higher than the same circuit without the proposed calibration. The effective chip area is $1.55mm^2$, and the power dissipates 300 mW including peripheral circuits, at a 1.2/1.5 V power supply.
