  • Fuel cell/battery hybrid power systems were studied to develop high efficient zero-emission fuel cell electric vehicles, Fuel cells were used as an auxiliary energy source and batteries were used as a transient power source. The fuel cell system is used to supply the average power demand. Dynamic response of the hybrid systems was simulated using PSPICE program and also tested experimentally, The results can be used to design the interface module and to determine the power requirement between the fuel cell unit and the battery pack.

  • In general, analog tester or strip chart recorder have been used to measure the corrosion potential of structures such as gas pipelines, oil pipelines, hot water pipelines, power cables etc. Recently, automatic digital data logger substitutes for these manual equipment because using these manual equipments are tedious and time consuming. However, digital data logger also has a shortcoming, that is, short measuring time because of the short lifetime of batteries. Therefore, we developed a long lifetime and low power loss battery taking advantage of galvanic series. In this paper, the results of development for power generator using two metals and DC/DC converter in order to obtain enough voltage for the operation of digital data logger. DC/DC converter operates with 0.5[V]. Its output voltage is 3.5[V] and output current is from 60[mAh] to 1,200[mAh].

  • This paper presents a constant power control logic for perfect starting a microtubine in vehicle. Under extremely low temperature, performance of the start-up system is severely dropped than that of room temperature because of increasing of load of mechanical parts including engine core and drop of the lead-acid battery capacity. Unfortunately, performance drop of lead-acid battery makes severe problems that cause a malfunction of fuel and lubrication system and power fail of digital devices. So we propose the new start-up logic by constant output power control of lead-acid battery using PWM inverter controller for preventing above problems and keeping good performance of start-up system for microturbine. Also, we prove usefulness of new start-up logic through experimental results under $-32^{\circ}C$ ambient temperature.

  • A hybrid sinusoidal-pulse current (HSPC) charging method for the Li-ion batteries in electric vehicle applications is proposed in this paper. The HSPC charging method is based on the Li-ion battery ac-impedance spectrum analysis, while taking into account the high power requirement and system integration. The proposed HSPC method overcomes the power limitation in the sinusoidal ripple current (SRC) charging method. The charger shares the power devices in the motor inverter for hardware cost saving. Phase shifting in multiple pulse currents is employed to generate a high frequency multilevel charging current. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed HSPC method improves the charger efficiency related to the hardware and the battery energy transfer efficiency.

  • This paper proposes a single-stage interleaved totem-pole on-board battery charger with a simple structure and a reduced component count. Apart from achieving ZVS turn-on of all switches and ZCS turn-off of all diodes, this charger does not require an input filter due to its CCM operation and bulky electrolytic capacitors, which in turn result in a high power density. A single-stage power conversion technique is applied to the interleaved structure in order to achieve a high power density and high efficiency. A 2.5 kW prototype of the proposed charger is also built and tested to validate the proposed operation.

  • The solar array regulator supplies the electric power to the battery and the other units of a satellite by controlling the operating point of a solar array. In this paper, the solar array regulator composed with analog circuits is proposed. The solar array regulator has three modes. The first is a maximum power point tracking mode for harvesting the maximum photovoltaic power generation. The second is a power limitation mode which is designed for optimizing the volume and weight of the solar array regulator by preventing the excessive power conversion. The last constant voltage mode is proposed to keep the Li-Ion battery is not over-charge. The small signal model of the solar array regulator which has the reversed input and output variables in comparison with conventional converter is established and the stability is analysed. Finally, the proposed design of the solar array regulator is verified by experiments.

  • The phase-shifted, full-bridge (PSFB) DC-DC converter is widely used in electric vehicles (EVs) to charge a low-voltage (12 V) battery from a high-voltage battery. A Photovoltaic (PV) module-integrated PSFB converter is proposed for the EV power conversion system. The converter is useful because solar energy can be utilized to extend the driving range. The buck converter circuit is simply realized by adding one switch to the conventional PSFB converter's secondary side. For the inductor and diode, the existing components in the PSFB converter are shared. The proposed converter can charge a low-voltage battery from the PV module with maximum power point tracking. In addition, the two power sources can be used simultaneously, and efficiency is increased by reducing the circulating current, which is a problem for the conventional PSFB converter.

  • In the battery based applications such as electric vehicle and energy storage system, the performance of the system highly depends on the reliability of the battery. However, it is difficult to obtain the accurate information about the state-of-health (SOH) of battery during its operation. In this paper a 3kw battery charger with battery diagnosis function which can estimate the SOH of the battery by using online impedance spectroscopy technique is introduced. For the charger phase shift full bridge converter with synchronous rectification has been adopted to implement the charge and diagnosis functions. The impedance spectroscopy is performed after the charge to obtain the information about the internal impedance of the battery module, hence the SOH can be estimated online by observing the impedance variation of the battery over time. All the design procedure of the proposed charger is detailed and the feasibility of the system is verified by the experimental results.

  • Recently, the small scale photovoltaic (PV) electronic devices are drawing attention as the upcoming PV generation system. The PV system is commonly used in small scale PV applications such as LED lighting and cell phone. This paper proposes photovoltaic output sensorless (POS) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control for a small scale charging system of PV-nickel metal hydride battery using field-programmable gate array (FPGA) controller. A converter is connected to a small scale PV cell and battery, and performs the POS MPPT at the battery terminal current instead of being at the PV cell output voltage and current. The FPGA controller and converter operate based on POS MPPT method. The experimental results show that the nickel metal hydride battery is charged by the maximum PV output power.

  • In this paper, a battery charging system for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and Electric Vehicle (EV), and operation algorithm of charging system are introduced. Also, the proposed charging system uses commercial electricity in order to charge the battery of parked PHEV and 48V battery charging system with power factor controllable single phase converter for PHEV is investigated in this paper. This research verifies the power factor control of input and the converter output controlled by the charge control algorithm through simulation and experiment.
