  • The containment retardation capacities of four different aquifers were evaluated in a preliminary study for development of bank filtration in the Young San river area. $NO_3-N$, $NO_2-N$, $NH_4^+-N$, Fe, Mn, phenol, and chloride were selected as the target contaminants and a nonreactive tracer, respectively. Batch isotherm tests were conducted to measure the partition coefficients of the target contaminants. The mass transport parameters of nonreactive tracer were estimated from column tests. From the results of bath isotherm tests, it was shown that lower stream aquifer materials have greater partition coefficients of $NO_3-N$, $NH_4^+-N$, Mn, and phenol than the upper stream aquifer materials; however, there was no significant position-dependent trend for Fe. All aquifer materials tested have the same range of partition coefficients for $NO_2-N$. Column tests showed that the molecular diffusion of Cl- was much less than the mechanical dispersion; and there was no significant difference between the estimated dispersivities of tested aquifer materials. Consequently, it seems that the difference in the containment retardation capacities between four aquifers tested in this study would primarily result not from hydrodynamic dispersion but from partitioning.

  • This study was investigated to control the corrosion and scale at the cooling water system in steel works. Laboratory and field tests were performed for the indirect cooling water system of plate mill. Throughout the experiment, various factors such as leakage of pipes, heating rate and capacity, and the reaction between existing and substitute inhibitors were carefully monitored. The results showed that the harmful effect of high temperature could be minimized, and satisfactory corrosion/scale controls were effectively achieved using inhibitor, even at the increased temperature of $80^{\circ}C$. The batch and field tests in the gas scrubbing cooling water system of blast furnace and cooling water system of corex plant indicated that the new inhibitor was more effective for the prevention of corrosion and scale than the existing one.

  • The retardation of heavy metals in a mixture of fly ash and bentonite was studied as a potential barrier material for a landfill. Column tests were conducted using synthetic leachate having 100 mg/L and 50 mg/L of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), respectively. Results indicated that the mixture had obvious retardation ability for heavy metals. To investigate the retardation factor caused by adsorption, batch adsorption tests were conducted at various concentrations. Test results were correlated with both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption of the lead ion was applicable to the Langmuir isotherm and the adsorption of the cadmium ion was applicable to the Freundlich isotherm. In addition, based on experimental results, the migration characteristics of heavy metals through the bed of fly ash and bentonite mixture were investigated using the PHREEQC, a reactive transport model, under the real conditions of the landfill liner.

  • The removal capacity of zero-valent iron for Cr(Ⅵ) was evaluated using batch kinetic tests. The rate constants for zero-valent iron dramatically increased as initial Cr(Ⅵ) concentration decreased. Generally, the reaction rates of Cr(Ⅵ) with zero-valent iron were faster than that of a biotic degradation of Cr(Ⅵ), and furthermore the reaction rates were inversely proportional to the initial Cr(Ⅵ) concentrations. After certain reaction time elapsed. no further decrease of Cr(Ⅵ) was observed, indicating a loss of iron reactivity. The loss of iron reactivity was primarily due to the passivation of iron surfaces with iron-Cr precipitates, but the reactivity of iron was recovered by adding iron-reducing bacteria. Even though the addition of bacteria itself removed Cr(Ⅵ), the combination of iron-reducing bactera and oxidized iron significantly enhanced the reaction rate for Cr(Ⅵ) removal. The results from column tests also confirmed that the innoculation of iron-reducing bacteria to the column containing completely oxidized iron partially enhanced the recovery of the iron reactivity.

  • The concept for the decolorization in biological dye wastewater treatment systems is based on anaerobic treatment, for the reductive cleavage of the dyes' azo linkages, in combination with aerobic treatment, for the degradation of the products from azo dye cleavage, aromatic amines. Batch tests were conducted to examine the conditions and the factors affecting biological treatment of dye wastewater. From the tests, the removal efficiencies of organics and colors of dyeing wastewater were improved to $COD_{Cr}$ 27% and color 9% by injecting 10% of the domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate, and $COD_{Cr}$ 30%, color 22% with 30% injection of domestic wastewater. Therefore it was proved that decolorization efficiency is demonstrated with domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate. The analysis of aromatic amines in wastewater showed that decolorization was achieved by cometabolism while aromatic amines were produced by cleavage of azo bonds under anaerobic conditions and these products were removed in an aerobic tank subsequently.

  • The biological denitrification batch tests were conducted to optimize the operating conditions with various temperature and initial SCO $D_{Cr}$ /N $O_3$-N ratio. and the denitrification rates were analyzed various SCO $D_{Cr}$ /N $o_3$-N ratio of influent with swine wastes fermented and temperature. The finishing time of denitrification was within 15 hours, 12 hours, and 6 hours as the temperature of denitrification applied were 15$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, 25$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, and 31$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, respectively. From the batch tests, denitrification rate was operated with over 3 of SCO $D_{Cr}$ /N $O_3$-N ratio. Denitrification rate was increased as the temperature of denitrification, increased such as 2.40-3.90 mg N $O_3$-N/gMLVSSㆍhr, 6.10-7.60 mgN $O_3$-N/gMLVSSㆍhr, and 14.40-15.88 mgN $O_3$-N/gMLVSSㆍhr, respectively. The denitrification rate was increased as the ratio of initial SCO $D_{Cr}$ N $O_3$-N increased. However, it was found that the suitable ratio of SCO $D_{Cr}$ /N $O_3$-N for denitrification should be considered because the ratio of mg SCO $D_{Cr}$ , consumed per mg N $O_3$-N removed varied depend on the influent SCO $D_{Cr}$ /TKN ratios.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the biodegradation characteristics of swine and cattle using anaerobic batch tests. The results showed that the maximum methane production rate($MPR_{max}$) and acclimation time(AT) of swine were 46.7 mL $CH_4/g$ VS.d and 17.2 d, respectively. The $MPR_{max}$ and AT of cattle were 56.5% and 24.0% lower than those of swine. The characteristics of anaerobic biodegradation varied with livestock species but $MPR_{max}$ and AT increased linearly with the content of lipid. The $MPR_{max}$ and AT of cattle with content of lipid were more sensitive than those of swine.

  • The properties of composite materials, when compared to those of metallic materials, are highly variable due to many factors including the batch-to-batch variability of raw materials, the prepreg manufacturing process, material handling, part-fabrication techniques, ply-stacking sequences, environmental conditions, and test procedures. It is therefore necessary to apply reliable statistical-analysis techniques to obtain the design allowables of composite materials. A new composite-material qualification process has been developed by the Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments (AGATE) consortium to yield the lamina-design allowables of composite materials according to standardized coupon-level tests and statistical techniques; moreover, the generated allowables database can be shared among multiple users without a repeating of the full qualification procedure by each user. In 2005, NASA established the National Center for Advanced Materials Performance (NCAMP) with the purpose of refining and enhancing the AGATE process to a self-sustaining level to serve the entire aerospace industry. In this paper, the statistical techniques and procedures for the generation of the allowables of aerospace composite materials will be discussed with a focus on the pooling-across-environments method.
