To investigate natural dyeing properties of bast fiber, properties of pre mordanting dyeing of sappan wood, gardenia and gallnut such as K/S values, developed color, and fastness were evaluated. Silk showed the most increased K/S values by pre mordanting treatment when Fe was uses as a mordant. The optimized amount of Fe was 3%. The colors of sappan wood was a series of YR. After pre mordanting treatment with Fe, the colors of bast fiber of mulberry and silk showed a series of RP, and the color of cotton showed a series of Y. The color of gallnut was a series of Y regardless of pre mordant treatment. Sappon wood (YR), gardenia (Y), and gallnut (Y) showed various colors such as YR, R, and RP, respectively. Sunlight fastness was not improved by pre mordanting treatment. The effect of pre mordanting treatment was not good. Especially the treatment with Al showed poor sunlight fastness.
To investigate the combination dyeing properties of natural dyes, the combination dyeing using gallnut,-Al, Cu, Fe-sappan wood, and gallnut-Al, Cu, Fe-gardenia was performed on bast fiber of mulberry, cotton, silk, and their K/S values, colors, and sunlight fastness were measured. The gallnut-Al, Cu, Fe-gardenia dyeing showed the highest K/S values when the dyeing concentration of gallnut is 3%. It tended to show the higher K/S values than gallnut-Al, Cu, Fe-sappan wood. The silk showed the highest values of in K/S, and then followed by cotton, and bast fiber of mulberry. The mordants developed different colors on the bast fiber and the cotton treated with gallnut-Al, Cu, Fe-sappan wood. However, the silk showed a series of YR, showing no effect of the mordants on the development of color. The combination dyeing of gallnut-Al, Cu, Fe-gardenia showed a series of Y. The results showed that sappan wood could develop various colors but gardenia could develop a series of Y. No distinct improvement on sunlight fastness of the combination dyeing was observed.
Kenaf has been estimated as an economic and environmentally compatible crop. This study purposed to enlarge the use of kenaf as textile materials and to develope high value-added textile fibers. Kenaf has been cultivated successfully and grown fast in Jeju. The height of kenaf stalks was about 220cm at 105 DAP and 400cm at 150 DAP, After harvesting at 105 DAP and seperating the basts from harvested kenaf stalks, decorticated kenaf basts were rotted in water at 15~$25^{\circ}C$ for biological rotting and were treated with 1%, 4% and 7% NaOH at 9$0^{\circ}C$ for chemical retting. The properties of extracted fibers were compared: such as fiber diameter. Transversal and longitudinal views, colors, crystallinities, strengths and elongations etc. The diameter of kenaf bast fibers was 15~25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Biologically rotted kenaf bast fibers had well developed lumens which were diminished after chemical retting. The degree of crystallinities of biologically rotted kenaf bast fiber was about 92~96% showed higher than those of chemically rotting. The biologically rotted fibers were bright and had creamy color. Yelloweness increased at chemically rotted fibers. Fiber bundle strengths were from maximum 98076.9 (gf/g) to minimum 63749.5 (gf/g). Fiber bundle strengths of biologically rotted kenaf fibers appeared greater than those of chemically rotted fibers. Alkali treatments of chemical rotting could make strength lower and elongation higher. Rotting method might be one of the most importance factors affecting to final fiber properties.
Anatomical characteristics of kenaf were investigated in transverse, radial and tangential direction by optical and scanning electron micrograph. Kenaf was made up of bast fibers, wood fibers, vessels and parenchyma cells. Bast fibers were long slender cells with different types of pits. The shape of wood fibers were in various ways and pointed at the ends. The pits were observed on the surface of bast fibers. Kenafs were diffuse and radial porous. and composed of solitary pores and two or three radial pore multiples. Various types of vessels were observed. The pits showed alternate pitting and larger diameter than other cells. Parenchyma cells were rectangular or square with different shapes of pith parenchyma cells compared to conventional types of parenchyma cells in wood. The number of pith on the surfaces were small.
This research was performed to investigate the physical properties and color appearance of Hanji manufactured using bast fibers dyed separately by two reactive dyes with different colors. The breaking length of color Ha was above 7 km. The fastness was five grade; the use of reactive dyes made the color of the Hanji not to be faded away. The Hanji manufactured by mixing uniformly two types of bast fibers separately dyed showed the mixed color of two different colors. However, the shives showed their original colors, resulted in irregular color patterns all over the sheets. The color of color Hanji with different colors in the front and back side of sheets showed color difference between front and back side of the sheets. Accordingly, the color of the sheet has a reflection from the backside, resulted in Pink. The colors of the Hanji appeared in this study could not be found from the Hanji manufactured by traditional methods.
This study was carried out to investigate the sheet properties of Morus Hanji, made by different pulping methods, such as alkali, alkali-peroxide and sulfomethylated pulping, and different stocks composed to bast and whole stalk fibers. Two species of Morus, M. alba and M. lhou, were used. Pulp yield of the whole stalk parts, its brightness and opacity were higher than those of bast part. In particular sulfomethylated pulp has higher brightness of $62{\sim}63%$, than other pulps(average brightness $30{\sim}40%$). In mechanical properties, paper made of bast fiber has higher strength than those of the whole stalks. Hanji made from M. lhou, whole stalk, and sulfomethylated pulp gave better sheet formation and higher strength than those of the others. Hanji from M. alba bast fiber and whole stalk pulps were not so good sheet properties.
To conserve wood resources for papermaking, chemical compositions of the hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) bast fiber cultivated in Korea such as holocellulose, ${\alpha}$-cellulose, lignin, alcohol-benzene extractives, hot and cold water extractives, and ash contents were investigated to manufacture the specialty packaging paper effectively. Significantly very low klason lignin content of 3.3% was accomplished by removing of the outer shell of bark. Laboratory soda pulping method which is very useful for the nonwood fiber was adapted, and it was found that there was no significant difference in both kappa number and H-factor between 25% and 30% NaOH charge. Hemp pulp cooked with the laboratory digester in 25% NaOH at $170^{\circ}C$ were mixed together with the wood pulp(NBKP:LBKP=1:1) in order to find the optimum mixture ratio which exhibited acceptable paper strength properties such as tensile index, burst index, and tear strength. When 10% of hemp soda pulps was mixed with 90% of wood pulps comprised of SwBKP and HwBKP (1:1), all physical strength increased significantly. The physical strength decreased as the amount of hemp pulp increased because the cell wall of bast fiber is very thick which causes low conformability and low fiber-fiber bonding. These results showed that paper made of hemp-wood pulp can be used for the specialty packaging paper which requires both the characteristic surface properties and the high physical strength of hemp fiber.
