  • This study was conducted to pursue the normalization of frequency distribution by making approach the coefficient of skewness to nearly zero tbrough SMEMAX transformation and to get probable minimum flows can be acquired by means of transforrnation equation which has been derivated by SMEMAX method to the annual minimum flow series of five watersheds along Geum river basin. The results obtained through SMEMAX method were compared with probable minimum flows according to return periods by Type III extremal distribution which has been determined as the best fitted one among probablility distributions for the analysis of minimum flow. All the results obtained through this study are summarized as follows. 1.SMEMAX transformation based on median value was proved to be the best method when the coefficient of skewness has less reliability because of the short duration for the observation and were not affected by accidental outliers. 2.SMEMAX transformation has found to be the best one for the coefficient of skewness to be made nearly zero in comparison with log and cubic root transformation. 3.Probable minimum flows according to the return periods were derivated by transformation equations obtained through theoretical analysis of SMEM AX transformation. 4.In general, probable minimum flows by SMEMAX method were appeared as higher values in the range of five and twenty years and as lower ones in the range of below than five and more than fifty years in return periods respectively, in comparison with the results of type III extremal distribution. 5.Relative errors in the probable minimum flows of SMEMAX method to the results of type III extremal distribution were shown to be within ten percent except those of one hundred years in return periods. 6.SMEMAX method was also confirmed to be useful for the analysis of minimum flow frequency as well as flood frequency analysis.

  • Recently, due to global warming, climate change has affected short time concentrated local rain and unexpected heavy rain which is increasingly causing life and property damage. Therefore, this paper studies the characteristic of localized heavy rain and flash flood in Nakdong basin study area by applying Data Mining method to predict flood and constructing water level predicting model. For the verification neural network from Data Mining method and hydraulic flood routing was used for flood from July 1989 to September 1999 in Nakdong point and Iseon point was used to compare flood level change between observed water level and SAM (Slope Area Method). In this research, the study area was divided into three cases in which each point's flood discharge, water level was considered to construct the model for hydraulic flood routing and neural network based on artificial intelligence which can be made from simple input data used for comparison analysis and comparison evaluation according to actual water level and from the model.

  • Mineralogical analysis of the bedrock of the Gobi Desert in southern Mongolia, the source of Asian dust, was conducted to trace the geological origin of the constituent minerals of Asian dust. The bedrock of the source of Asian dust consists of Paleozoic volcanics and volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks, Paleozoic granitic rocks, and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. Paleozoic volcanics and volcaniclastic sediments lithified compactly, underwent greenschist metamorphism, and deformed to form mountain ranges. Mesozoic sedimentary rocks fill the basin between the mountain ranges of Paleozoic strata. In comparison to Paleozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks, Mesozoic sedimentary rocks have lower contents of chlorite and plagioclase, but high contents of clay minerals including interstratified illite-smectite, smectite, and kaolinite. Paleozoic granites characteristically contain amphibole and biotite. Compared with the mineral composition of bedrock in source, Asian dust is a mixture of detrital particles originating from Paleozoic and Mesozoic bedrocks. However, the mineral composition of Mesozoic sedimentary rocks is closer to that of Asian dust. Less lithified Mesozoic sedimentary rocks easily disintegrated to form silty soils which are deflated to form Asian dust.

  • This study suggests a new time distribution method of rainfall for small urban watersheds. IETD (Interevent Time definition) determination method considering basin characteristics and dimensionless accumulation rainfall curves involving rainfall events with shorter duration than 3-hours are suggested. A new definition of IETD is the time period from the end of a rainfall event to the end of a direct runoff. Using the method, we drive an area-IETD regression curve for the Joong-Rang basin. The rainfall event with 10 year-return periods, 2-hour duration is distributed and applied four urban watersheds. In the four watersheds, we calculate hydrographs for four watersheds using SWMM and compare them with ones of the Huff's distribution model. From the comparison, we find that peak flows resulted from the developed methodology are $11\sim15%$ larger than ones from the Huff's model. As conclusion, the Huff method should be adopted for the urban watersheds with careful verification.

  • The hull form of icebreaking tanker depends on the trade route and ice characteristic. The hull form has to be designed for icebreaking concept if the vessel is operating in heavy ice and also the hull from has to be optimized for general tanker when the ship is operating in ice-free ocean. This paper presents comparison of ship resistance in pack ice, level ice and open water. Four ships are used to compare the resistance characteristic. One is conventional tanker and three ships are icebreaking tankers. The ice model test was carried out at the IOT (Institute for Ocean Technology, Newfoundland, Canada) and open water test was performed at 55MB (Samsung Ship Model Basin). The ice resistance of conventional tanker was predicted by Colbourne's method. The resistance of open water, pack ice and level ice are compared and discussed. The best hull form of icebreaker is not good in open water performance compare to conventional tanker. This result explains that the hull form of icebreaker and normal tanker have to compromise when the ship is operated in ice and ice-free condition. The result of this paper gives a guide for icebreaking tanker design.

  • With the increasing severity of climate change, intense torrential rains are occurring more frequently globally. Flooding due to torrential rain not only causes substantial damage directly, but also via secondary events such as landslides. Therefore, accurate and prompt flood detection is required. Because it is difficult to directly access flooded areas, previous studies have largely used satellite images. Traditionally, water indices such asthe normalized difference water index (NDWI) and modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI) which are based on different optical bands acquired by satellites, are used to detect floods. In addition, as flooding likelihood is greatly influenced by the weather, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images have also been used, because these are less influenced by weather conditions. In this study, we compared flood areas calculated from SAR images and water indices derived from Landsat-8 images, where the images were acquired at similar times. The flooded area was calculated from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-1 images taken between the end of May and August 2019 at Lijiazhou Island, China, which is located in the Changjiang (Yangtze) River basin and experiences annual floods. As a result, the flooded area calculated using the MNDWI was approximately 21% larger on average than that calculated using the NDWI. In a comparison of flood areas calculated using water indices and SAR intensity images, the flood areas calculated using SAR images tended to be smaller, regardless of the order in which the images were acquired. Because the images were acquired by the two satellites on different dates, we could not directly compare the accuracy of the water-index and SAR data. Nevertheless, this study demonstrates that floods can be detected using both optical and SAR satellite data.

  • In this study, it was examined for the reduction of wave overtopping and water level fluctuation in front of the revetment when applying a reinforcement method to revetment where wave overtopping occurs. As a result of the study, in the case of the cross-sectional experiment. more than 70% of the wave overtopping reduction effect depending on the reinforcement conditions was occurred, and it was analyzed that the result increases by about four times or more in the comparison with the 3d test. The average water level in front of the revetment was lowered when a low crest structure was not installed. and there was a tendency to rise under the condition of low crest structures installed. In the comparison with the wave basin test, there was a difference of about 0.5 to 0.6 times when a low crest structure was not installed, and it was increased by 5.5 times after low crest structures were installed.

  • As the Mekong River basin is a nationally shared river, it is difficult to collect precipitation data, and the quantitative and qualitative quality of the data sets differs from country to country, which may increase the uncertainty of hydrological analysis results. Recently, with the development of remote sensing technology, it has become easier to obtain grid-based precipitation products(GPPs), and various hydrological analysis studies have been conducted in unmeasured or large watersheds using GPPs. In this study, rainfall-runoff simulation in the Mekong River basin was conducted using the SWAT model, which is a quasi-distribution model with three satellite GPPs (TRMM, GSMaP, PERSIANN-CDR) and two GPPs (APHRODITE, GPCC). Four water level stations, Luang Prabang, Pakse, Stung Treng, and Kratie, which are major outlets of the main Mekong River, were selected, and the parameters of the SWAT model were calibrated using APHRODITE as an observation value for the period from 2001 to 2011 and runoff simulations were verified for the period form 2012 to 2013. In addition, using the ConvAE, a convolutional neural network model, spatio-temporal correction of original satellite precipitation products was performed, and rainfall-runoff performances were compared before and after correction of satellite precipitation products. The original satellite precipitation products and GPCC showed a quantitatively under- or over-estimated or spatially very different pattern compared to APHPRODITE, whereas, in the case of satellite precipitation prodcuts corrected using ConvAE, spatial correlation was dramatically improved. In the case of runoff simulation, the runoff simulation results using the satellite precipitation products corrected by ConvAE for all the outlets have significantly improved accuracy than the runoff results using original satellite precipitation products. Therefore, the bias correction technique using the ConvAE technique presented in this study can be applied in various hydrological analysis for large watersheds where rain guage network is not dense.

  • In the study the instantaneous unit hydrographs (IUHs) based on the linear Nash (1957) and the nonlinear Diskin (1964) models are derived and compared for the Soyang river basin. Total 14 rainfall runoff events are used for the study and the model parameters are estimated by minimizing the sum of square error considering runoff hydrograph ordinates as relative weights. The representative IUHs for both models are decided to show an average shape of derived IUHs. In the application of the representative IUHs of Nash and Diskin, Diskin model shows better performances in reproducing the observed outflows, especially the peak flow. In the comparison of two Diskin models little difference could be found between the IUHs with the same or different number of two characteristic reservoirs.rvoirs.

  • It is of the most urgent necessity to get hydrological time series of long duration for the establishment of rational design and operation criterion for the Agricultural hydraulic structures. This study was conducted to select best fitted frequency distribution for the monthly runoff and to simulate long series of generated flows by multi-season first order Markov model with comparison of statistical parameters which are derivated from observed and sy- nthetic flows in the five watersheds along Geum river basin. The results summarized through this study are as follows. 1. Both two parameter gamma and two parameter lognormal distribution were judged to be as good fitted distributions for monthly discharge by Kolmogorov-Smirnov method for goodness of fit test in all watersheds. 2. Statistical parameters were obtained from synthetic flows simulated by two parameter gamma distribution were closer to the results from observed flows than those of two para- meter lognormal distribution in all watersheds. 3. In general, fluctuation for the coefficient of variation based on two parameter gamma distribution was shown as more good agreement with the observed flow than that of two parameter lognormal distribution. Especially, coefficient of variation based on two parameter lognormal distribution was quite closer to that of observed flow during June and August in all years. 4. Monthly synthetic flows based on two parameter gamma distribution are considered to give more reasonably good results than those of two parameter lognormal distribution in the multi-season first order Markov model in all watersheds. 5. Synthetic monthly flows with 100 years for eack watershed were sjmulated by multi- season first order Markov model based on two parameter gamma distribution which is ack- nowledged to fit the actual distribution of monthly discharges of watersheds. Simulated sy- nthetic monthly flows may be considered to be contributed to the long series of discharges as an input data for the development of water resources. 6. It is to be desired that generation technique of synthetic flow in this study would be compared with other simulation techniques for the objective time series.
