  • ${\beta}$-Amyloid accumulation in the brain is a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Since early detection of ${\beta}$-amyloid may facilitate more successful and timely therapeutic interventions, many investigators have focused on developing AD diagnostic reagents that can penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Oleanolic acid (OA) is a substance found in a variety of plants that has been reported to prevent the progression of AD in mice. In this study, we synthesized and evaluated a new radioligand in which OA was conjugated to lactoferrin (Lf, an iron-binding glycoprotein that crosses the BBB) for the diagnosis of AD. In an in vitro study in which OA-Lf was incubated with ${\beta}$-amyloid (1-42) aggregates for 24 h, we found that OA-Lf effectively inhibited ${\beta}$-amyloid aggregation and fibril formation. In vivo studies demonstrated that $^{123}I$-OA-Lf brain uptake was higher than$^{123}I$-Lf uptake. Therefore, radiolabeled OA-Lf may have diagnostic potential for ${\beta}$-amyloid imaging.

  • Two piperazine-containing 3,4-dihyroquinazolines (BK10007S/8S) have been synthesized, based on our previous work on the synthesis and antitumoral activity of 3,4-dihyroquinazolines. After evaluating them for T-type calcium channel blocking effect and in vitro anti-cancer effect, they were profiled for acute and repeat dose toxicity (40 mg/kg, 2 weeks) to BALB/c mice. BK10007S/8S were further in vivo evaluated against human pancreatic MIA PaCa-2 carcinoma in $BALB/c^{nu/nu}$ nude mice, which exhibited 54 and 61% tumor growth inhibition through 57-day oral administration of 2 mg/kg of body weight, respectively.

  • We have fabricated YBa$_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ thin films by cylindrical hollow cathode sputtering. For 2 inch diameter of MgO (100) substrate, we obtained the zero resistance temperature in the range from 83 K to 86 K and thickness uniformity better than 5 % over the whole area. Also, the average deposition rate was 100nm/h which is higher than 10 times compare to conventional off-axis sputtering method. These results indicate that cylindrical hollow cathode sputtering seems to have unique capabilities for high rate and homogeneous deposition of large area thin film.

  • In this study, we have investigated the substitutional effects of In ions with divalent ones in the $Srln_2O_4:Pr^{3+}$ phosphors and the relative change of the red and blue emissions. The substitutional Zn ions greatly intensified the blue emission band at 492 nm, but the red emission band at 608 nm was relatively less changed. On the other hand, Cd ions have no effect on the relative intensities. We explained the phenomena in connection with the distance of Pr-D, i.e., covalency experienced by a $Pr^{3+}$ion.

  • Aluminum oxide thin films were grown on a poly ethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrate at the temperature of 100$^{\circ}C$ using atomic layer deposition method. The film showed very flat morphology and good adhesion to the substrate. The visible spectrum showed higher transmittance in the range from 400 nm to 800 nm than that of PEN. The water vapor transmission value measured with MOCON for 230nm oxide-deposited PEN was 0.62g/$m^2$/day @ 38$^{\circ}C$, while that of PEN substrate was 1.4g/$m^2$/day @ 38$^{\circ}C$.
