Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify differences in blood pressure according to cuff size and measurement sites of the participants. Method: The participants consisted of 50 women and 50 men whose upper arm circumference was $26\sim30cm$. They had no chronic illness and gave consent to participate. Blood pressure of the wrist was measured in the sitting position, the upper arm with a standard cuff, large and small cuffs were used for measurement in supine position and the thigh in prone position. The data were analyzed with paired t-test using SPSS 12.0 program. Result: The data for the upper arm showed a difference in systolic and diastolic blood pressure depending on the site of measurement. There was a significant difference between measurements with a standard cuff and measurements with large and small cuffs. The systolic blood pressure of the wrist and the thigh were significantly lower than that of the upper arm. Conclusion: These results suggest that the selection of an appropriate cuff is an essential element in ensuring accuracy when measuring blood pressure and differences in systolic blood pressure for the upper arm, wrist and thigh indicate the need to record the measuring site when measuring blood pressure.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate facilitators of evidence-based practice (EBP) in Clinical Nurses. Method: The instruments used in study were the EBP facilitator scale developed by Nagy et al. and a questionnaire on EBP-related characteristics. Data were collected from 230 nurses at a tertiary hospital and analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: Compared to previous studies, this study showed that nurses had more experience related to research courses and clinical research. However, the proportion of nurses who reviewed relevant articles still remained low. The respondents had positive perceptions of organizational supports for EBP and belief in the value of EBP, whereas they had negative perceptions of skills in locating and evaluating research reports, knowledge of research terms and statistics, and time to devote to EBP. Conclusion: The findings of the study provide important basic data to develop and implement an EBP programs. In future, EBP programs should cover the nurses' skills to search and review research literature as well as their knowledge of research terms and statistics. Furthermore, nurses will require help to ensure that there is adequate time to devote to EBP.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data necessary for educating nursing students by establishing a desirable sense of ethics values. Method: In this descriptive research, 101 nursing students and 191 non-nursing students (in other health related fields) from Daejeon City were selected. Tools used for data analysis were descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test and step wise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 12.0 version. Results: Average scores for consciousness of biomedical ethics in nursing students was 2.94, and in non-nursing students, 2.77. When differences in the consciousness of biomedical ethics of nursing and non-nursing students were compared, nursing students had significantly higher scores for artificial abortion, artificial insemination, prenatal diagnosis of fetus, right to life of newborn, euthanasia, organ transplantation and human biotechnology, but significantly lower for brain death. Variables which influenced consciousness of biomedical ethics were religion and economic status in the nursing students and intent to attend a class in biomedical ethics, quantity and quality of biomedical ethics in the current curriculum and religion in the non-nursing students. Conclusion: Continuing educational programs need to be considered and attention given to the significant variables that can promote consciousness of biomedical ethics in nursing students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the images of men as nurses held by high school boys, and to provide basic data about the desirability of nursing as a career choice for them. Method: Q-methodology which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each item was used: The 35 high school boys classified 31 selected Q-statements into a normal distribution using a 9-point scale. The collected data was analyzed by the pc-QUNAL program. Results: Among the high school boys, three types of images of men as nurses were identified. Type I; A promising occupation for men through active way of thinking, Type II; Men working in a woman oriented field of work, Type III; A promising profession without any gender stereotype. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that specific strategies should be developed to promote the choice of nursing among high school boys.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the level of stress, hardiness, and professional burnout of intensive care unit (ICU) nurses and to provide basic data for the qualitative improvement of nursing work achievement in the workplace. Method: The data were obtained from 129 ICU nurses through a questionnaire. Results: Stress showed positive correlation with the level of professional burnout and there was negative correlation between hardiness and professional burnout. Nurses in the group with a high level of stress, and a high level of hardiness reported a low level of professional burnout compared to those in the group with a lower level of hardiness (t=-2.60, p= .012). Nurses in the group with a low level of hardiness and a low level of stress showed a lower level of professional burnout than those with a high level of stress (t=3.51, p= .001). Conclusion: The results show that the high level of stress when coupled with a low level of hardiness of ICU nurses results in a high level of professional burnout. For this reason, it is important for nursing administration to support nurses to reduce levels of stress and the resulting burnout in ICU nurses.
Effectiveness of the video-record learning method in teaching bowel elimination nursing skill was investigated using an experimental research methodology. Data was collected from 63 female students attending Fundamental Nursing class from a nursing college in Seoul. The subjects were randomly assigned to two groups, one is the experimental group of 29 and the other the control group of 34. The independent variable was video-record learning method and the dependent variable were the degree of knowledge achivement, nursing skill achivement, competence on practicing elimination skill, and satisfaction about the learning method. The hypotheses of the study were as following. 1) There will be significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in dependent variables. 2) There will be significant positive correlations between nursing skill achievement and other three dependent variables-interest in nursing, adaptation in nursing, and preference of nursing job. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, t-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient with SPSS $PC^+$ program. Findings of the study are : 1) There was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in knowledge achievement using P<.05. 2) There was significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in nursing skill achievement using P<.05. 3) There was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in competence on practicing elimination skill using P<.05. 4) There was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in satisfaction about learning method using P<.05. 5) There was positive correlation between nursing skill achievement and the other variables but no significant difference was shown. 6) This study suggests that video-record learning method is an effective learning method for achiving basic nursing skills but is not effective in other areas such as knowledge achivement, competence in performing nursing practice, and satis-faction about the learning method. Further study with more developed research design and statistical analysis should be done to investigate the effectivenes of video-record learning method in learning basic nursing skill more accurately.

Background: Hepatitis B is an important public health problem as one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to compare the theoretical and practical knowledge levels of dental assistant students about Hepatitis B Virus. Methods: The 1st and 2nd grade students of the Oral and Dental Health program were invited to participate in the survey. Out of the 68 invited students, 61 completed the questionnaire. The average ages of the male and female students surveyed were 20.27±1.45 and 19.56±1.16, respectively. A total of 34 questions were asked, of which 15 measured basic theoretical knowledge and 19 assessed basic practical knowledge. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the students' knowledge for each question according to their sex and grade. When the questionnaire was grouped into basic theoretical and basic practical knowledge levels, both were observed to be high. While the lowest correct answer rate was 35.00% for the questions about practical applications, it was 31.14% for the questions measuring the level of theoretical knowledge. There was no statistically significant difference when the levels of knowledge of 1st and 2nd grade students were compared. Students answered the majority of the questions correctly, and ranged between 71% and 100%. Conclusion: Students' high level of basic theoretical knowledge can be a result of their in-class education on the fundamentals. However, their knowledge about the correct approaches in practical applications indicates the beneficial role of having well-defined criteria and prevention protocols that are required in hospitals and the effectiveness of their environmental orientations.
Focusing on the emergence of the basic course in American schools of architecture, in particular Gyorgy Kepes' courses at MIT, this paper studies the transformation of architectural pedagogy during the years after World War II. Kepes centered his architectural pedagogy on the picture plane, which was to function as the primary media for applying the principles of Gestalt psychology, that is the identification of the whole and its parts and the reciprocity between the internal human organism and the outside world. Kepes hence introduced a set of unconventional visual practices that were not readily assimilated to architectural conventions. Paralleling the establishment of the basic course, MIT also formulated a functionalist and spatial pedagogy with its two initial design studios, courses 4.721 and 4.722. These studios shared the notion that architectural design evolved from the inside toward the outside, an idea that took hold not just in the pragmatic environment of MIT's studios but also in conservative academic programs as well as in popular magazines, picture books, and exhibitions for the consumer public. The architectural surface became inseparable from the objects of art, furniture, and design, all of which were to be the generators of space. Hence, during the 1950s, the architectural surface provided a specific locus of intersection between the visual fundamentals of the basic course and the working principles of architectural design. Kepes, however, had by this time become disillusioned with architecture's potential as the medium of unity. Though he maintained the Gestalt logic of identity, he expanded it toward the goal of grander synthesis of society and consciousness freeing himself from the constraints of disciplinary instruction. In the case of Kepes, the mediating role of the picture plane was foregone in a regressive turn toward a primal, innocent, and direct experience.
For the development of nursing curriculum after the completion of a basic program, this study was conducted by comparing the 4-year baccalaureate degree program with the 3-year diploma program. The results are as follows: 1. The curriculum of the 4-year baccalaureate and 3-year diploma program are similar to each other in philosophy, educational objectives, and practical experience. However, advanced nursing courses in practical experience were taught by the 4-year baccalaureate degree program only. 2. For the development of a more advanced and effective curriculum, the 3-year diploma program should concentrate on nursing core courses (80 credits) such as 'adult nursing' 'maternal nursing' 'pediatric nursing' 'psychiatric nursing' 'community health nursing' 'fundamentals of nursing' 'managerial nursing'. Furthermore, nursing related courses (20 credits) and liberal education courses (20 credits) should also be offered by the 3-year diploma program. 3. This nursing curriculum should be conducted by registered nurses who have graduated from a 3-year diploma program. The nursing educational philosophy and the educational objectives of this curriculum are the same as the 4-year program recommended by the Korean Nurses Association. This curriculum consists of 2 parts: advanced nursing courses and liberal education courses. The advanced nursing courses (20 credits) include 'nursing theory(4 credits)' 'nursing research(4 credits)' 'nursing leadership(4 credits)' 'nursing curriculum{4 credits)' and 'seminar of nursing issues(4 credits)' total is 40 credits.
The applicability of limit analysis methods in design and assessment of concrete structures generally requires a certain plastic deformation capacity. The latter is primarily provided by the ductility of the reinforcement, being additionally affected by the bond properties between reinforcing steel and concrete since they provoke strain localization in the reinforcement at cracks. The bond strength of reinforcing bars is not only governed by concrete quality, but also by construction details such as bar ribbing, bar spacing or concrete cover thickness. For new concrete structures, a potentially unfavorable impact on bond strength can easily be anticipated through appropriate code rules on construction details. In existing structures, these requirements may not be necessarily satisfied, consequently requiring additional considerations. This two-part paper investigates in a theoretical study the impacts of the most frequently encountered construction details which may not satisfy design code requirements on bond strength, steel strain localization and plastic deformation capacity of cracked structural concrete. The first part introduces basic considerations on bond, strain localization and plastic deformation capacity as well as the fundamentals of the Tension Chord Model underlying the further investigations. It also analyzes the impacts of the hardening behavior of reinforcing steel and concrete quality. The second part discusses the impacts of construction details (bar ribbing, bar spacing, and concrete cover thickness) and of additional structure-specific features such as bar diameter and crack spacing.
