  • The 7th National Education Process, implemented in 2004, features student-oriented, selective educational programs with a wide range of optional subjects. In 2005, reflecting this revised National Education Process, the College Scholastic Ability Test began allowing individual students to choose the subjects for examination they would like to take. As a result, the deviations of the college freshmen's academic achievements in some subjects have noticeably widened. This study shows academic abilities of the students on some subjects by comparing the results of 2008 College Scholastic Ability Test with that of the Basic Academic Ability Evaluation Test for freshmen in engineering college of Hongik university. Lastly, this paper presents some improvement plans in order to better accommodate students with academic achievement levels lower than what is expected by the university.

  • Today, universities in Korea give a great effort to complement basic college scholastic ability of freshman. Maybe it could be unnecessary effort from university. However, we cannot just leave students who have poor academic performance about 10 to 30% in a university. Universities have to prepare to solve this problem. Thus government and universities investigate a lot of efforts but there is no guarantee. As a result, e-learning could be the best solution to complement poor academic performance of freshman and it also could be the best way to reduce financial burden of university. So, many universities introduce e-learning system and they also support professors to make e-learning content. We need to promote content usage and to improve overall operations. In this paper, we discuss poor academic performance problems under the current middle and high school education systems and review approaches to solve these problems. From this analysis, we propose the design of an effective e-learning system and a method of operation to complement students who achieve poor academic performance.

  • Line graphs are frequently used to communicate data and basic concepts in classroom activities, Science teachers often assume that students are able to interpret the symbolic meaning of the graphs, but such an assumption is not based on sufficient evidence, The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of graphing ability to science-process skills and academic achievement of high school students: With regard to science-process skills, graphing ability was found to have a slight correlation with science-process skills (.41). Among the sub-skills of the science-process, graphing ability was seen to have a relatively high correlation with basic science-process skills such as 'measuring', 'inferring', 'predicting', while having relatively low correlation with integrated science-process skills such as 'formulating hypothesis' and 'generalization', With regard to academic achievement, graphing ability appeared to have no correlation with academic achievement (.06). Hence, a correlation between graphing ability and science-process skills was proved. It can also be concluded that improving graphing ability will greatly support students with their science study and, therefore, organized efforts and efficient educational methods should be developed in order to overcome the insufficient graphing ability among high school students.

  • This study is to examine the validity of assessing basic-level proficiency in physics among incoming engineering freshmen through item analysis and standard setting. For empirical analysis, we examined the physics subject taken by the freshman class of 2021 at K University, considering its significance for engineering students. In this study, we initially performed item analysis utilizing both classical test theory and item response theory. Subsequently, leveraging the item and test information, we employed a modified Angoff method and the Bookmark method for standard setting. Consequently, the difficulty level initially set during item development was found to be higher than the actual performance level exhibited by the students. This study highlights a discernible disparity between the expected university standard and the real proficiency level of incoming freshmen in terms of basic academic ability in physics. Based on these research findings, a comprehensive discussion on the fundamental academic competence of engineering students was conducted, underscoring the necessity for formulating a tailored learning approach leveraging the outcomes from the basic ability test.
