  • Precise positioning stages are often employed for precise machinery. For the purpose of vibration isolation, these precise positioning stages are mounted on a heavy base structure which is supported by compliant springs. Then the base structure is subjected to residual vibration due to the reactive force and vertical moving load induced by the stage motion. This paper investigates the vibration behavior of a positioning stage base and the associated vibration suppression technique. A dynamic model is developed to investigate the base vibration due to the reactive force and moving load effects by the moving stage. An input shaping technique is also developed to suppress the residual vibrations in base structures. Simulations and experiments show that the developed dynamic model adequately represents the base vibration and that the proposed input shaping technique effectively removes the residual vibrations from the positioning stage base.

  • In this paper, we present our method to reduce vibration of the base plate of a refrigerator by avoiding resonance between base plate and compressor operation. To verify the modes of the base plate, FE models of the base plate with free-free condition and applied boundary condition were built and validated by results from experimental modal analysis. Operating Deflection Shape analysis was applied to find the sensitive area on the base plate during compressor operation. In optimization process, Finite Difference Method - based sensitivity analysis is used to detect the most sensitive area. Finally, based on this numerical result, we will make beads on the base plate to reduce vibration of refrigerator.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of the flexibility of HDD base plates on spindle vibration via theoretical predictions and experimental measurements. The flexibility of the base plate can significantly affect HDD spindle vibration. This is the most prominent feature in 2.5 inch HDD. Nevertheless, theoretical analysis of the spindle vibration often neglects the flexibility of the non-rotating part including spindle, base plate, and top cover. Our theoretical model developed in University of Washington can include the flexibilities of spindle and base plate. As a result, our theoretical prediction generally agrees well with our experimental measurements in vibration analysis. Moreover, Because of its small form factor, industrial practice is to use flanged disks instead of regular disks in vibration testing of prototypes. Our experimental measurements indicate that flanged disks and regular disks have very different behavior when the frequency is above 1 KHz.

  • In order to reduce the structure borne noise of the equipment sufficiently, its exciting force should be restricted and additional anti-vibration devices such as resilient mount and bellows should be applied. Since the structure borne noise is dependent on the design of the base for the equipment, it is very important to design the base with low vibration. Therefore, in this research, various types of the base design for the shipboard equipment are investigated to reduce the structure borne noise. In order to design the base with low vibration, the exciting force at the center of the gravity of the equipment is firstly defined through the experiment. Using the exciting force identified by experiments, various types of base designs for the typical turbo machine are evaluated by FEM(finite element method) analysis.

  • In this study, the analytical method to evaluate the response of rotor-bearing system subjected to base excitation was presented. The equations of motion contain speed dependent gyroscopic terms, base rotation dependent parametric terms and several forcing function terms which depend on linear accelerations, rotational accelerations and a combination of linear and rotational combination. The study of rotor-bearing system excited by its base motion is not only able to predict the rotational performance, but provides the fundamental data for vibration isolation. In order to illustrate transient response, transient response analysis of a practical application sample were performed. The transient response was carried out for the given base excitation by using the state-space Newmark method that incorporates the average velocity concept.

  • This study evaluates the performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system for the vibration and seismic isolation of an Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) by measuring its operational vibration and seismic responses. The vibration performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by the vibration measurements for an identical EDG set with different base systems - one with an anchor bolt system and the other with a coil spring-viscous damper system. The seismic performance of the coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by seismic tests with a scaled model of a base-isolated EDG on a shaking table. The effects of EDG base isolation on the fragility curve and core damage frequency in a nuclear power plant were also investigated through a case study.

  • A turbo-fan is easily exposed to noise and vibration as against other industrial machines and the majority of them is subject to be damaged by vibration. The most usual problem of vibration in a turbo-fan is resonance so the case of being composed of iron sheet structure with low strength like a turbo-fan should be taken seriously. In this paper, FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) and Order tracking method were used to analyze factors of vibration in a turbo-fan and hereby with proper selection of vibration isolator, we wanted to reduce vibration of base. After Order tracking, we knew resonance occurred in rotational frequency 23 Hz(1400 rpm) at the casing and the bearing. After the test of base vibration using vibration isolators, the spring isolator was more effective than the robber isolator in the base vibration and the vibration isolating is more effective in the case that the isolating pad is adhered to the bottom of the isolating spring.

  • This research is concerned with the study of an active vibration absorber using piezoelectric actuators and Isolation pad. The active isolation system consists of 4-pairs of PZT actuators bonded on the surface of an aluminum plate and a passive damping material. The active system is connected to the passive system in series. The Signals of the accelerometers are fed into the PZT actuator through the controller. We proposed a new control technique which can deal with the shock as well as the base excitation in this study. The Positive Acceleration Feedback(PAE) tuned to the natural frequency of the vibration isolation system is used to suppress the vibrations caused by the shock using the top accelerometer signal. The Negative Acceleration Feedback (NAF) based on the base acceleration signal is used to counteract the base motion. Experimental results show that the proposed active vibration isolation system can suppress vibrations.

  • In this study, the train-induced vibration was measured at many locations at/around the actual service lines and the data base was constructed using the measurement results. The characteristics of train induced ground vibration was categorized and the empirical ground vibration estimating equations were developed. On the ground area (level grounds, embankments, cut sections), the vibration estimating equations were developed in terms of ground vibration level which was related with the distance from the source. Especially for the cut section areas, the vibration levels were expressed with the vibration receiving point expressed by the ratio of vertical distance to horizontal distance(V/H) from the source. As a result, when V/H is 0.96, the vibration estimating equation gives a minimum vibration level.
