  • PEA(Print Evenness Analyzer) Module can be utilized as a tool to evaluate print mottle. The tester is de-signed to measure the uniformity of liquid penetration into paper at very short contact time. To evaluate effects of base paper properties on print mottle, the experiments were performed with 3 types of base pa-per whose sizing degree, roughness and porosity were varied. Coated papers were produced with high solid coating color (70%) and low solid coating color (67%). Uniformity of water absorption into base paper and coated paper was measured with PEA. It was found that, in order to minimize print mottle, base paper shall be produced with a high sizing degree and low roughness and the concentration of coating color shall be kept as high as possible, providing that it has proper rheology properties for coating process.

  • The influence of base paper properties and fiber type on coating penetration was studied in terms of characterization of coating holdout using two types of hand sheets as the base paper which were prepared from thermomechanical pulp (TMP) and hardwood bleached kraft pulp(KP) sized internally with alkyl ketene dimmer (AKD). Laboratory rod draw down coater was used for surface sizing and coating application. Characterization of coating penetration was done by measuring the roughness of the backside of coating layer. The backside of the coating was exposed by dissolving the fibers in a solution of cupriethylenedimine (CEO). Data show that internal sizing of base paper is effective and surface sizing is more effective to prevent coating penetration. Comparing between the two types of base papers, backside roughness of coating layer of TMP sheet is much larger and sizing is more effective to reduce coating penetration than those of KP sheet. From the result of water absorption and sizing degree after surface sizing, it seems that internal sizing slows down molecular diffusion much more than capillary penetration, but surface sizing reduces the capillary penetration. Furthermore, predominant mechanism of water into paper of TMP sheet seems to be capillary penetration, but it is molecular diffusion in the case of KP sheet.

  • The objectives of this paper are to analyze simultaneous heat and mass transfer performance for a plate type bubble absorber with binary nanofluids numerically and to investigate the effects of binary nanofluids and surfactants on the size of the bubble absorber. The effective absorption ratio represents the effect of binary nanofluids and surfactants on the absorption performance. The kinds and concentrations of nano-particles and surfactants are considered as the key parameters. The results show that the addition of surfactants can reduce the size of absorber up to 74.4%, the application of binary nanofluids does the size up to 63.6%. Combination of binary nanofluids and surfactants can reduce the size of absorber up to 77.4%.

  • It is well known that shellfish absorb and accumulate heavy metals in the water environment. When the concentration of the heavy metals in the water is above guideline, we find abnormal accumulation of them in the body of shellfish. This study on green oysters is an instance showing the relationship between the abnormal accumulation of heavy metal and industrial wastewaters containing it. The influence of the industrial wastewaters upon shellfish has been discussed from the statistical, physiological, and saprobiensystematic points of view, and the author wants to make clear of the absorption and accumulation mechanism of the heavy metals and physiological situation. This paper deals with the copper-contents in the meat of oysters which were collected in Changhang Bay and Daechun area, the latter being not supposed to be influenced by the water of the Kum River during the period from October 1970 to february 1971. The mean value of the copper contents in oysters caught at the sampling station in the Changhang Bay area is ranged from 851.5 to 143.1mg Cu/kg wet base, and that of Daechun area varied from 13.0 to 27.4mg Cu/kg wet base, so an evident difference is seen at a significance of $0.1\%$. It appears that one of the environmental factors making copper concentrated in the oysters of the Changhang area is due to the copper-contaning slug being discharged into the sea water by the Changhang Ore Refinery.

  • Properties of a lesser-used wood species were investigated to determine its potential for structural utilization. Trees of Delonix regia were felled and sampled at the base, middle and top and then sectioned to inner wood, middle wood, and outer wood for variation across the axial and radial directions. Hence, selected physical and mechanical properties as well as natural durability of D. regia along the radial and axial directions were examined. Obtained data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at α0.05. There was no significant difference in the Moisture content (MC) of the wood but specific gravity (SG) decreased from base to top ranging from 0.35-0.44. Water absorption, volumetric swelling, and volumetric shrinkage range from 46.18-51.86%, 2.57-4.02%, and 2.26-3.96% respectively along the axial plane. The weight loss for graveyard exposure and accelerated laboratory decay test ranged from 25.14-48.00% and 32.02-44.45% respectively. Modulus of Rupture and Modulus of Elasticity values range from 29.42-72.68 Nmm2 and 3,834.54-8,830.37 Nmm2 respectively. The SG values has confirmed the species as a medium density wood and values of other properties tested showed that the wood is dimensional stable and moderately resistance to fungi and termite. Hence, it could be used for light construction purposes such as furniture and other interior woodwork.

  • A string wallcovering is a kind of textile wallcovering which is made of cellulose fiber yarn laminated on base paper. Compared with normal paper or PVC wallpaper, a string wallcovering is preferred continually in the interior design market, as it is not only environmentally friendly but it also has less cost on mass production without the weaving process and has a natural visual effect, excellent functionality such as thermo keeping, permeability, sound absorption. However, in the dyeing process, it is not appropriate to use plenty of energy such as water, electricity, steam or chemicals considering the environmental trend and the government policy plenty of energy such as water, electricity, steam or chemicals. Currently, a string wallcovering is made of raw white yarn and padding with direct dye or pigment which includes toxic elements, especially the use of direct dye is restricted in a part of the developed country due to inclusion of azo. In this study, we researched dyeing based on cold pad batch dyeing of a string wallcovering with reactive dyestuff. The peel strength and bending depth test confirmed that the optimum adhesive type and spread amount improved the water resistance of the string wallcovering. Also, pad batch dyeing with optimum reactive dyestuff enhanced the color fastness to light and rubbing in dry and wet conditions. Additionally, for improvement of color fastness to rubbing in a wet condition, the additional treatment finishing without soaping process which is used water. The results of this study can be used as basic data for environmentally friendly and energy saving of the textile wallcovering.

  • The paper describes spectroscopic characteristics of plasma induces in the pulsed YAG laser welding of alloys containing a large amount of volatile elements. The authors have conducted the spectroscopic analyses of laser induced Al-Mg alloys plasma in the air and argon atmosphere. In the air environment, the identified spectra were atomic lines of Al, Mg, Cr, Mn, Cu, Fe and Zn, and singly ionized Mg lines, as well as the intense molecular spectra of A10 and Mg0 formed by chemical reactions of evaporated Al and Mg atoms from the pool surface with oxygen in the air. In argon atmosphere, Mg0 and AI0 spectra vanished, but AIH spectrum was detected. The hydrogen source was presumably hydrogen dissolved in the base metals, water absorbed on the surface oxide layer, or $H_2$ and $H_2O$ in the shielding gas. The resonant 1ines of Al and Mg were strongly self-absorbed, in particular, self-absorption of the Mg 1ine was predominant. These results show that the laser induced plasma was made of metal1ic vapor with relatively low temperature and high density.

  • Zirconium based alloys have been extensively used as a cladding material for fuel rods in nuclear reactors, due to their low thermal neutron absorption cross-section, excellent corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties at high temperatures. However, a cladding material for fuel rods in nuclear reactors was contact water during long time at high-temperature, so it is necessary to improve the wear and corrosion resistance of the fuel cladding, At ambient environment, there are few data or paper on the characteristic of corrosion in chloride solution and acidic solution. The specimens used in this work are pure Zr and Zircaloy-4. Zircaloy-4 is a specific zirconium-based alloy containing, on a weight percent basis, 1.4% Sn, 0.2% Fe, 0.1% Cr. Pitting corrosion resistance of two alloys by ASTM G48 is higher than that of electrochemical method. Passive film formed on Zircaloy-4 is mainly composed of $ZrO_2$, metallic Sn, and iron species regardless of formation environments. Also, passive film formed on Zr alloys shows n-type semiconductic property on the base of Mott-Schottky plot.
