  • The importance of aviation safety has been emphasized recently due to the development of aviation industry. Despite the efforts of each country and the improvement of screening equipment, screening tasks are still difficult and detection failures are frequent. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of feedback on improving signal detection performance applying a Simulated Baggage Screening Program(SBSP) for improving aviation safety. SBSP consists of three parts: image combination, option setting and experiment. The experimental images were color-coded to reflect the items' transmittance of the x-rays and could be combined as researchers' need. In the option, the researcher could set up the information, incentive, and comments needed for training to be delivered on a number of tasks and times. Experiment was conducted using SBSP and participant's performance information (hit, missed, false alarms, correct rejection, reaction time, etc.) was automatically calculated and stored. A total of 50 participants participated and each participant was randomly assigned to feedback and non-feedback group. Participants performed a total of 200 tasks and 20(10%) contained target object(gun and knife). The results showed that when the feedback was provided, the hit, correct rejection ratio and d′ were increased, however, the false alarms and miss decreased. However, there was no significant difference in response criteria(${\beta}$). In addition, implications, limitations of this study and future research were discussed.

  • This study examined the effects of field complexity and type of target objects on the performance in baggage screening task. A total of 62 participants(male: 45.2%, female: 54.8%) participated and their mean age was 22.88. The simulated baggage screening task was developed for this study and after the orientation and task exercises, main experiment session was conducted. Participants performed a total of 200 tasks and 40(20%) contained target object. The complexity was set at three levels: high, middle, and low levels and the number of background items contained 20, 14. and 8 respectively. The type of target was set as gun, knife, liquid, and righter. The dependent variables were hit ratio and reaction time. The results showed that the hit ratio decreased and reaction time increased significantly as field complexity increased, and they varied depending on the type of target. The hit ratio of the knife was the highest and liquid lowest and reaction time of the knife was the fastest and liquid slowest. In addition, the interaction effect was also significant. Knife was not affected by complexity, however, small item such as lighter was most affected by complexity.

  • Airport is shifted airport 1.0 to airport 4.0 called smart airport and services paradigm is changed into direction to point the customer targeted benefits. Smart airports make use of integrated Internet of Things components to provide added-value services. By integrating smart components, airports are being exposed to a larger attack surface and new attack vectors. Self-services such as web or mobile check-in, self check-in/tagging/back drop/boarding, etc. should be strengthened to make airport processes smarter, and technologies such as automatic immigration, smart security search, and automatic AI-based baggage search should be applied. In this paper, we describe the necessity and importance of smart airports and next generation security screening technology. Further, we describe a walk through-type smart security screening system.

  • Smart Security is the global initiative of Airports Council International in collaboration with airports, airlines and governmental agencies. Its main objective is to create a step change in passenger and cabin baggage screening, escalating security costs and constantly evolving threats. Incheon International Airport should adopt and deploy smart security systems not only to strengthen aviation security but also increase passenger's experiences and operational efficiency by way of seamless security screening that it will lead to establish the best security environment to prevent terrorism and acts of unlawful interference.

  • As intellectual terror threats increase, we feel the limit in coping with those threats and the things we do are placing traditional X-ray machines & ETD and increasing aviation security staffs. In fact, even if air transportation system is the fast and most efficient transportation methods, it is true that there are many inconveniences to endure due to terror threats. In the name of security, even if we make a lot of efforts and time to screen both good-natured passengers, baggage, cargo and suspicious passengers, it is impossible to screen perfectly and it is not an efficient methods. Therefore, we introduce profiling system that reduce the effort to screen good-natured passengers but focus on screening dangerous passengers and baggages. Profiling system strengthens aviation security, using the concept "Selection & Concentration". Israel started to introduce manual profiling system in aviation security, which is interviewing suspicious passengers and it has been used in crime investigation since 1960. And it has been upgraded and diversified to CAPPS(Computer Assisted Passenger Screening Program) and SPOT(Screening Passenger by Observation). So, this theses is to study on the concept & kind of profiling and profiling methods adopted in airlines. Also it presents the method of introduction of profiling system in Korea and the necessity of making law on it.

  • Cost reduction and equality by exempting re-scanning of passengers, baggage and cargo secured from the first airport of departure, mainly in the European Union/European Economic Area(EU/EEA), Switzerland, etc. One-Stop Security(OSS) is being promoted to maintain the level of security while increasing speed and convenience, and movement is expected to expand worldwide. Therefore, this paper establishes the basic concept of OSS through a literature review of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices(SARPs), and analyzes the actual conditions of OSS implementation in major countries such as the United States and the EU. It is intended to present the political, economic benefits for Korea and highlight the urgency of implementing the OSS system in the aviation industry including the cargo sector. Therefore, the practical implications of strengthening international cooperation through the expansion of government and airport operators OSS implementation to overcome the resource shortage problem of the existing national air cargo security system and to strengthen the status as a global aviation powerhouse were drawn up. There is academic significance that it raised the need for effective implementation of OSS, which was not previously covered.
